Designing modern Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) is posing new challenges to both industrial practitioners and academics. In this context, adopting cutting-edge paradigms, such as Model-Based Systems engineering (MBSE), DevOps, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), can offer new opportunities for improving CPS design automation. While such paradigms are already jointly used in the research community to support system design activities, there is a need to fill the gap between academia and industrial practitioners. Indeed, system specification is still mainly performed manually in many industrial projects. In this paper, we present a collaboration between industrial and academic partners of the AIDOaRt European project towards a model-based approach for CPS engineering applied in one of the project use cases. We identify key challenges and corresponding solutions to enhance the automation of CPS design processes. Notably, we consider a combination of prescriptive modeling, model transformations, model views, modeling process mining, and AI-based modeling recommendations. As an initial evaluation, the proposed approach is applied to a practical industrial case study.

If software self-adaptation has to be widely adopted by industry, we need to think big, embrace complexity, provide easily deployed and cost-effective solutions, and justify trust. On fairness, MAPE-K should not solely take the blame. MAPE-K is one of the many interpretations of feedback loops apply to systems for which mathematical models - mostly based on control theory, are difficult to be synthesised. MAPE-K has provided a basic and widely accepted framework for justifying the deployment of feedback loops in software systems. Undoubtedly, it has helped to promote and advance the whole area, but now more concrete and resilient solutions are necessary. this position paper argues that, first, industry has been adopting software self-adaptation, perhaps in a way that may not be recognised by the academic community, second, generic solutions are unfeasible since every software system brings its own challenges, and thirdly, the generic stages associated with a feedback loop, like MAPE-K, are insufficient to solve specific challenges.

A socio-technical system of systems (SoS) is a collaboration of independently operated and managed systems. these constituent systems join the SoS to work together for a common goal: to achieve positive emergent behaviors such as greater capability, efficiency, resource utilization, reliability, and robustness. To achieve such a goal, an SoS needs to be well-managed with mitigation plans for all system risks. However, existing risk management strategies were developed for individual, non-integrated systems and are therefore inadequate for use with SoS. this paper uses the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden as a case study for exploring risk analysis for SoS management. We performed a risk analysis of this SoS based on STAMP (System-theoretical Accident Model and Processes), an existing method from the safety domain, as part of developing a preliminary risk analysis process for practitioners. Preliminary results reveal that extended SoS structures, uncertainty-driven decision-making, emerging behavior, and changes in trust, policy, and legislation pose significant challenges. the study's contribution is that our findings provide a knowledge base to act as a guide for risk management of SoS. Applying a method for safety analysis to crisis management also extends the body of knowledge on methods for SoS risk analysis.

this paper explores hackathons as an evaluative tool and their contribution to students' learning. Mixed-data collection methods/qualitative and quantitative data collection were used by conducting a survey among students and semi-structured interviews among hackathon juries and organizers. Results have demonstrated that hackathons can be used as evaluative tools alongside exams. From a student's perspective, hackathons supply positive motivation and are less stressful while enabling students to demonstrate their knowledge in a work-like environment. From the organizer's perspective, hackathons require more effort in terms of organization whereas less effort is needed in handling of evaluation and grading. this work provides guidelines to address potential challenges and organize a hackathon as an exam replacement or part of the exam. this study advocates that the evaluation steps described in this paper could constitute a solid basis to develop a formal evaluation strategy to be applied to similar future events. the paper provides preliminary results that were collected in a rigorous manner. Future work should target a larger sample size to draw more firm conclusions and generalize to wide academic settings of softwareengineering programmes.

the aim of this study is the design and implementation of an automated lighting system to compensate the necessary illumination of a hydroponic indoor-greenhouse in spaces with low illumination. the proposed system implements the Kalman Filter for noise reduction and an anti-windup PID tuned with PSO to reach a desired value of illumination in face of illuminance changes. In addition, an IoT web interface for monitoring the current illumination on plants is implemented, which shows a plot of the illumination throughout the day.

softwareengineering artifacts are central to DevOps, enabling the collaboration of teams involved with integrating the development and operations domains. However, collaboration around DevOps artifacts has yet to receive detailed research attention. We apply the sociological concept of Boundary Objects to describe and evaluate the specific softwareengineering artifacts that enable a cross-disciplinary understanding. Using this focus, we investigate how different DevOps stakeholders can collaborate efficiently using common artifacts. We performed a multiple case study and conducted twelve semi-structured interviews with DevOps practitioners in nine companies. We elicited participants' collaboration practices, focusing on the coordination of stakeholders and the use of engineering artifacts as a means of translation. this paper presents a consolidated overview of four categories of DevOps Boundary Objects and eleven stakeholder groups relevant to DevOps. To help practitioners assess cross-disciplinary knowledge management strategies, we detail how DevOps Boundary Objects contribute to four areas of DevOps knowledge and propose derived dimensions to evaluate their use.
