Current software development has moved away from the traditional manual workshop model and emphasizes improving software product quality. To address the issue of repetitive work, software reuse techniques can be adopted to continually enhance the quality and efficiency of software development. software reuse primarily involves reutilizing existing software knowledge during the software development process, effectively reducing maintenance costs incurred during development and controlling the overall software development expenses. software components are an effective form of supporting software product reuse and serve as the core technology for enabling software reuse. Component-based software engineering techniques emphasize the use of reusable software "components" to design and construct programs, aiming to assemble these components within a software architecture to achieve software reuse and improve the quality and productivity of software products. However, selecting the most suitable components from the results of component retrieval requires understanding the different usages of each component in the retrieval results. the existing methods suffer from excessive reliance on manual approaches and errors caused by inter-component relationships. therefore, this paper proposes a component selection technique called UEBCS (Usage Example-Based Component Selection). this technique leverages steps such as clustering analysis and hierarchical classification to achieve optimal component selection. UEBCS has shown excellent results in terms of both efficiency and accuracy in selecting components. this method provides technical support for software developers in the software development process and holds significant practical significance for enhancing software development quality and efficiency, as well as promoting the deepening development of the software industry. © 2024, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In Model-Based Systems engineering (MBSE), certain model information is needed for early stage analysis such as system architecture analysis. However, often such information is not available, especially when the organization's transformation to MBSE is ongoing, which is typically a long process for many large companies. there is a need for being able to perform some analysis or receive other partial benefit from MBSE, at early stages, without having to fully implement all models with high-fidelity. this paper proposes a novel partial modeling approach to support early stage analysis such as system architecture optimization. the approach includes proper dispositioning of different kinds of models and tools, uncertainty quantification using polynomial chaos expansion, and adaptable system design methods. We demonstrate it on an aircraft electrical power system to support early stage analyses that include load and terminal voltage analyses, and a sustainable electrical architecture optimization.

In this paper we formulate the problem of predicting the outcome (winner) of an ongoing National Basketball Association (NBA) match as a supervised machine learning problem. In this approach, as the match progresses, the outcome prediction dynamically adapts to the current match situation which does not happen in static prediction problems. Dynamic outcome prediction of the match seems to have received less attention in the literature than static predictions. We compute the features used in the classification problem based on the most up-to-date match situation till that point in time. A total of 32 features are used. We present results for all the regular season matches of the 2022-23 NBA season. Dynamic prediction accuracy varies from about 62% at the beginning of the match to about 78% at the beginning of the final quarter of the match. We also evaluate feature importance in this classification problem. © 2024 IEEE.

Electro-osmotic dewatering (EOD) has long been proposed to dewater the porous insulation materials to maintain their dry status. However, as water migrated from the anode to the cathode, the water content near the anode was reduced first. Once there was insufficient water content to sustain the electric current, the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) was terminated and then the remnant water inside the materials cannot be further extracted. To remedy the problem, this investigation proposed to deploy parallel anodes along the water migration direction and switch on each anode sequentially with the proceeding of the dewatering process. three anode layers made of thin carbon fibre mesh and the cathode made of stainless steel screen were adopted to dewater a glass fibre cotton block. the electric currents in each dewatering stage were monitored and the dewatering rate was weighed. the results revealed that the multiple phased anodes obtained 26.5% more dewatering rate than the EOD with the single anode and thus is very promising to keep porous insulation materials in the dry status. © 2024 18th conference of the international Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - conference Program and Proceedings. Background. Within the software industry, it is commonly estimated that software professionals invest a substantial portion of their work hours in the process of understanding existing systems. In this context, an ineffective technical onboarding process, which introduces newcomers to software under development, can result in a prolonged period for them to absorb the necessary knowledge required to become productive in their roles. Goal. the present study aims to explore the familiarity of managers, leaders, and developers with software visualization tools and how these tools are employed to facilitate the technical onboarding of new team members. Method. To address the research problem, we built upon the insights gained through the literature and embraced a sequential exploratory approach. this approach incorporated quantitative and qualitative analyses of data collected from practitioners using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings. Our findings demonstrate a gap between the concept of software visualization and the practical use of onboarding tools and techniques. Overall, practitioners do not systematically incorporate software visualization tools into their technical onboarding processes due to a lack of conceptual understanding and awareness of their potential benefits. Conclusion. the software industry could benefit from standardized and evolving onboarding models, improved by incorporating software visualization techniques and tools to support program comprehension of newcomers in the software projects.

In response to heightened concerns about indoor air quality in hospital buildings following the Covid-19 pandemic, and despite increased use of technologies like air purifiers to mitigate airborne infection risks, a knowledge gap exists in understanding indoor air quality within hospital patient rooms. A one-week measurement campaign at a hospital in Finland aimed to address this gap by assessing particulate matter concentrations in isolation patient rooms. Additionally, we used measured air flow rates for infection risk calculation. Measurements results indicated a significant reduction in PM2.5 I/O ratios (37% to 56%) with air purifier use. the measured airflow rates underscore discrepancies between the designed and measured values, thereby underscoring the importance of regularly assessing ventilation systems. the incorporation of air purifiers demonstrates the potential to rectify the disparities in air change rates (ACH), aligning with the recommendations outlined by the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations (REHVA) guidelines. © 2024 18th conference of the international Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - conference Program and Proceedings. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) is undeniably a crucial factor that affects the occupants’ overall health and well-being. However, there is a significant lack of available actionable and measurable real-time metrics for the impact of IEQ on occupants, restricting potential control solutions and the validation of their effectiveness. Even more, occupant-centric and energy concerned automatic control solutions with direct aim to decrease or even prevent any negative effects of poor IEQ on occupants are required for creating sustainable built environments. In this work, we propose a novel framework for an occupant-centric proactive air-purification and ventilation control methodology (PPV). the method utilizes state-space models along with what-if scenarios to generate the potential solution space. A multi-objective optimization extracts the optimal solution in terms of air-purification and ventilation operation points, while minimizing various computed IEQ impact metrics in terms of the occupants’ health, comfort and virus transmissibility risk, and also considering the energy expenditure. © 2024 18th conference of the international Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - conference Program and Proceedings. Personas are a powerful tool for use during Requirements engineering (RE). We curated 98 persons used for various RE tasks in various domains from 41 academic publications. Using these personas, we formulated a proposed RE persona taxonomy consisting of several dimensions. To evaluate whether our proposed RE persona taxonomy could aid requirements engineers, we interviewed 20 practitioners to get their feedback on our approach. they reported several perceived benefits of our proposed RE taxonomy, including providing recommendations for relevant human factors in personas, serving as persona templates, and guiding junior requirements engineers. We also identified areas that could be improved: the need to differentiate between internal and external aspects and understand the relationships between them better, providing the taxonomy with clear instructions, and the potential to develop a tool that aids persona generation in RE practice.

this paper presents a novel Convolutional Based Temporal Attention (CBTA) module that improves the performance of temporal convolutional networks (TCN) in lipreading tasks without requiring any additional data. Our CBTA method enhances recognition accuracy by focusing attention on relevant frames in the time sequence of a video. the study demonstrates how our strategy achieves groundbreaking sucacess on the Lip Reading in the Wild (LRW) dataset, achieving an accuracy of 92.61%—surpassing contemporary methods by approximately 0.5%. the experiment also indicates the broad utility and effectiveness of the adaptable CBTA. the proposed module substantially boosts Top-1 Accuracy for challenging words, offering a promising direction for overall performance improvement in lip-reading tasks. © 2024 knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School. this work focuses on preventing post-surgery infections in an Operating theatre (OT). the study analyses two different Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVACs) in an OT by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), advanced mesh morphing to reshape HVAC geometry, and a Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) technique suitable to deploy a Digital Twin (DT) of the whole system. It’s well established that high fidelity CFD simulations are able to understand and control the development of post-surgery infections (Zabaglo and Sharman, 2023);compressing such simulations in a ROM such a benefit becomes portable in a real-time DT ready to be used at design stage, to match at best the HVAC with the OT, and eventually plugged on the OT system for advanced control. the investigated case is the OT of the Monza Hospital in Italy, and the HVAC system geometry has been modified using mesh morphing. the results show how the developed DT allows evaluating the impact of different HVAC systems design in a real time and interactive way. © 2024 18th conference of the international Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, INDOOR AIR 2024 - conference Program and Proceedings.
