We study the performance of an adaptive space sharing policy for parallel systems when the application involves I/O operations. We consider four types of I/O models in this paper: NO, NOP, O1 and O2 models. In the NO and NOP models, jobs can either perform an I/O operation or a computation. In the O1 and O2 models, I/O operations overlap with computation. In the O1 model, I/O operations are done at the beginning and end of each task. In contrast, in the O2 model, I/O operations and computation are interleaved. these I/O models are studied in combination with three parallel job structures: Fork-and-Join, Divide- and-Conquer, and Guassian elimination. these three parallel structures cover a spectrum of variable parallelism job structures. the fork-and-join program exhibits a constant parallelism. the parallelism of the divide-and-conquer program increases initially to a maximum and then decreases progressively. In the GE job program, a job starts with its maximum parallelism and progressively decreases to 1. Characterization of bandwidth-aware meta-schedulers for co-allocating jobs across multiple clusters

In this paper, we present a bandwidth-centric job communication model that captures the interaction and impact of simultaneously co-allocating jobs across multiple clusters. We compare our dynamic model with previous research that utilizes a fixed execution time penalty for co-allocated jobs. We explore the interaction of simultaneously co-allocated jobs and the contention they often create in the network infrastructure of a dedicated computational multi-cluster. We also present several bandwidth-aware co-allocating meta-schedulers. these schedulers take inter-cluster network utilization into account as a means by which to mitigate degraded job run-time performance. We make use of a bandwidth-centric parallel job communication model that captures the time-varying utilization of shared inter-cluster network resources. By doing so, we are able to evaluate the performance of multi-cluster scheduling algorithms that focus not only on node resource allocation, but also on shared inter-cluster network bandwidth.

this paper presents a harmony search based parallel optimization algorithm to minimize voltage deviations in three phase unbalanced electrical distribution systems and to maximize active power outputs of distributed energy resources (DR). the main contribution is to reduce the adverse impacts on voltage profile during a day as photovoltaics (PVs) output or electrical vehicles (EVs) charging changes throughout a day. the IEEE 123-bus distribution test system is modified by adding DRs and EVs under different load profiles. the simulation results show that by using parallel computing techniques, heuristic methods may be used as an alternative optimization tool in electrical power distribution systems operation.

the Internet carries all types of traffic and provides end-to-end Quality of Service. But high-demanding audio and video applications that operate in distributed environments are very sensitive to transmission delay and jitter. the best-effort unpredictable nature of the Internet is unfriendly to stream traffic generated by voice and video. this paper suggests a ‘Better than Best Effort’ treatment to such flows. An important contribution is that a simple classification at the router identifying these ‘favored’ UDP flows simplifies the entire service model. A simple AQM (Active Queue Management) scheme is proposed. the flows belonging to certain multimedia applications are given preference, yet giving fair chance to other flows. the AQM algorithm is a modified version of the de facto standard RED (random Early Detection). RED favors only TCP and TCP-friendly flows in congestion avoidance. this work aims at providing a service class to these normally victimized non-TCP friendly flows. simulation results show that fairness can also be maintained with other flows. © 2005 18th ISCA International Conference on parallel and distributed Computing Systems 2005, PDCS 2005. A real-time performance evaluation model for distributed software with reliability constrains

In this paper, we propose an approach for the real-time performance analysis of distributed software with reliability constraints, called Athena. the approach is based on the real-time and reliability performance analysis of distributed program. In Athena, two important factors, imperfect nodes and the links reliability, are introduced. the algorithms proposed in Athena generates sub-graphs, counts the reliability of each sub-graph, calculates the transmission time for all the transmission paths of each data file, and computes response time of each data file with reliability constraint. In this way, the real-time performance of distributed software with reliability constrains can be evaluated.

We consider small-scale power systems consisting of several inverter-interfaced units connected in parallel to a common bus, the point of common coupling (PCC), and sharing a joint load. this is a frequently encountered configuration in microgrid applications. In such a setting, two important control objectives are reactive power sharing and voltage regulation at the PCC. In this paper, we first show that the nonlinear equilibrium equations corresponding to the aforementioned objectives admit a unique positive solution. then, we propose a consensus-based distributed voltage controller which renders this desired unique solution locally asymptotically stable. Finally, control performance is illustrated via a simulation example.

Penetrating distributed generation units into the radial distribution networks has been making the protection schemes become ever so complex. the microgrid modes of operation have also increased this complexity. Moreover, the 'loop-based microgrid' concept has made it extremely difficult or even impossible to utilise the available radial protection schemes. Although redesigning a new protection structure solves the problem, there should be an affordable way for surviving today's protection systems;accordingly, this study equips the ordinary overcurrent relays with intelligent electronic devices to act as an agent within a multi-agent framework. Given these devices are equipped with an efficient communication infrastructure for industrial applications, named IEC 61850 standard, the proposed approach uses a communication-based strategy, named token, to securely protect the system without any conflict in relays' operation. the simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method for any DG's penetration, network configuration and fault location. this kind of flexible strategies can affordably differ the expensive protection system replacement in the future revolutionary network upgrades.

Although distributed networks and systems are widely deployed, an effective overall benchmark architecture is still lacking. Recently we defined and studied the fat-stack network architecture and found that it is both efficient and scalable to distributed systems of various scales. In precedent work, we theoretically proved that the fat-stack is universal by measure of routing efficiency with a low 1.5-powered logarithmic overhead. Universality implies that the fat-stack of a given size is nearly the best routing network of that size. the fat-stack is also the minimal universal network in terms of number of links and nodes used. In this paper, we add more analytical proof and report our simulation results. simulations show that the fat-stack outperforms a mesh-based distributed network of comparable hardware usage. We show how the fat-stack can be an effective benchmark architecture and how to scale the network from a VLSI graph layout to a large-scale distributed topology. Our work helps explain why some deployed networks function in the way they do in terms of routing. It also provides an exemplary network of proven efficiency and scalability for building new distributed systems. © 2005 18th ISCA International Conference on parallel and distributed Computing Systems 2005, PDCS 2005.
