A standard probabilistic formulation of a local shape estimator due to Witkin (1980) has been demonstrated to work to some extent on a range of data, but it also has been shown to overestimate slant. The author identifies and analyzes three sources of this error: the choice of prior probability distribution on shape; a systematic bias in the observation of image events; and a kind of nonergodicity in the stochastic process associated with surface events. As a result of this analysis, the author formulates a corrected probabilistic local shape estimator, proves a correctness theorem for it, and demonstrates its superiority to the Wilkin estimator in a set of experiments.< >

This paper addresses the problem of automatic facial gestures recognition in an interactive environment. Automatic facial gestures recognition is a difficult problem in computer vision, and most of the work has focused on inferring facial gestures in the context of a static head. In the paper we address the challenging problem of recognizing the facial expressions of a moving head. We present a systematic framework to analyze and classify the facial gestures with the head movement. Our system includes a 3D head pose estimation method to recover the global head motion. After estimating the head pose, the human face is modeled by a collection of face’s regions. These regions represent the face model used for locating and extracting temporal facial features. We propose using a locally affine motion model to represent extracted motion fields. The classification consists of a graphical model for robustly representing the dependencies of the selected facial regions and the support vector machine. Our experiments show that this approach could classify human expressions in interactive environments accurately.

This paper presents a Radon transform-based approach to the detection of linear features in images characterized by high noise levels. This approach is based on the localized Radon transform where the intensity integration is performed over short line segments rather than across the entire image. The algorithm, referred to as the feature space line detector (FSLD) algorithm, is tested on synthetic images of linear features with very high noise levels. The results of this testing demonstrate the algorithm's robustness in the presence of noise, as well as its ability to detect and localize linear features that are significantly shorter than the image dimensions or that display some curvature.< >

In this paper, a correlational approach for distinguishing occluding contours from object markings for 3D object modeling is presented. The proposed method is valid under weak perspective projection, does not require to search for correspondences between frames, can handle scaling between consecutive images. Thus can estimate the full Euclidean surface structure, and does not require camera calibration or camera motion measurement. Extensive experimental results show that the method is robust to the occlusion of feature points and image noise unlike previous affine-based approaches. Qualitative and quantitative results for the relation between the required minimum viewing angle change for the detection and the surface curvature are also presented.

A multiscale filtering scheme based on the three Matheron axioms for morphological openings is developed. It is shown that opening a signal with a gray scale operator does not introduce additional zero-crossings as one moves to coarser scales. Within this framework, the problem of choosing an appropriate structuring element is studied. In order to obtain a measure of the performance of different structuring elements, the statistical properties of gray scale opening are studied, using a powerful tool in mathematical morphology, namely, basis functions.< >

The application of digital technologies to culture history preservation and interpretation is a rapidly growing field that has captured the imagination of many. In this work, we explore the application of image classification systems for use in the reconstruction of archaeologically excavated 18th and 19th-century ceramic fragments. In specific, we investigate the classification of thin-shell ceramics based on color and texture descriptors in order to aid in vessel reconstructions. In addition to using well known SIFT features, we formulate a new feature descriptor based on total variation geometry. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed descriptor accurately represents texture and that, when categorizing fragments, it is best to utilize both the color and texture information available.

We present a new contour-based background-subtraction technique to detect people in widely varying thermal imagery. Statistical background-subtraction is first used to identify local regions-of-interest. Within each region, gradient information in the foreground and background are combined to form a contour saliency map. After thinning, an A* path-constrained search along watershed boundaries is used to complete any broken contour segments. Lastly, the contour image is flood-filled to produce silhouettes. Results are presented that demonstrate the robustness of the approach to detect people across a wide range of thermal imagery using a fixed set of parameters.

Translation symmetry is one of the most important pattern characteristics in natural and man-made environments. Detecting translation symmetry is a grand challenge in computer vision. This has a large spectrum of real-world applications from industrial settings to design, arts, entertainment and eduction. This paper describes the algorithm we have submitted for the Symmetry Detection Competition 2013. We introduce two new concepts in our symmetric repetitive pattern detection algorithm. The first concept is the bottom-up detection-inference approach. This extends the versatility of current detection methods to a higher level segmentation. The second concept is the framework of a new theoretical analysis of invariant repetitive patterns. This is crucial in symmetry/non-symmetry structure extraction but has less coverage in the previous literature on pattern detection and classification.

Current systems for content filtering, browsing, and retrieval rely on low-level image descriptors which are unintuitive for most users. In this paper, we propose an alternative framework that exploits the structured nature of most content sources to achieve semantic content characterization, and lead to much more meaningful user interaction. Computationally, this framework is based on the principles of Bayesian inference and can be implemented efficiently with Bayesian networks. As an illustration of its potential we apply it to the domain of movie databases.

Gradient methods are widely used in the computation of optical flow. The authors discuss extensions of these methods which compute probability distributions of optical flow. The use of distributions allows representation of the uncertainties inherent in the optical flow computation, facilitating the combination with information from other sources. Distributed optical flow for a synthetic image sequence is computed, and it is demonstrated that the probabilistic model accounts for the errors in the flow estimates. The distributed optical flow for a real image sequence is computed.< >
