Providing the financial engineering community with adequate software tools presents several challenges to application developers. Experience shows that reusability-oriented software development as supported by object technology has the potential to meet these challenges. To back the argument, a project of building a pilot implementation of a swap valuation system using a comprehensive class library including an application framework is reported. As a novelty the project emphasized the use of so-called design patterns. The project experience suggests that the use of design patterns significantly eases the application of a large class library and facilitates the reuse of design.

Conscientious software is a recently proposed paradigm for developing reliable, self-sustaining software systems. Conscientious software systems consist of an allopoietic part, which encapsulates application functionality, and an autopoietic part that is responsible for keeping the system alive by monitoring the application and adapting it to environmental changes. Practical application of the conscientious software paradigm requires solutions to two open problems: The design of suitable autopoietic programminglanguages and the proposal of concrete architectures for combining the autopoietic and allopoietic parts. In this paper, we tackle the second challenge, and propose a concrete, aspect-oriented architecture for realizing conscientious software. Here, we introduce epi-aspects, a construct for upgrading new and existing applications into conscientious software. This paper provides the architectural design of epi-aspects. an autopoietic simulator, and a concrete framework for developing epi-aspects in Java. The framework and the simulator are used to conduct a case Study in which we develop and test a conscientious Java application.

An object encoding translates a language with object primitives to one without. Similarly, a class encoding translates classes into other primitives. Both are important theoretically for comparing the expressive power of languages and for transferring results from traditional languages to those with objects and classes. Both are also important foundations for the implementation of object-orientedlanguages as compilers typically include a phase that performs these translations. This paper describes a language with a primitive notion of classes and objects and presents an encoding of this language into one with records and functions. The encoding uses two techniques often used in compilers for single-inheritance class-based object-orientedlanguages: the self-application semantics and the method-table technique. To type the output of the encoding, the encoding uses a new formulation of self quantifiers that is more powerful than previous approaches.
