Aspect-oriented requirements analysis involves the identification of concerns that behaviorally influence other concerns. Such concerns are described in requirements called emphaspectual requirements: requirements that detail the influence of one concern over another. The current state of the art for aspect-oriented requirements analysis is Theme/Doc, which allows lexical analysis of requirements based on a set of developer-chosen keywords. It provides a graphical depiction of how concerns relate to requirements, and affords identification of potential aspectual requirements. In addition, clusters of requirements and concerns are identified to arrive at a more useful set of concerns than those initially *** of the lexical nature of the Theme/Doc approach, aspectual requirements are missed, or wrongly identified. Additionally, requirements may be wrongly clustered if they contain ambiguous *** this work we explored whether the use of a statistical approach for textual analysis, Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), would improve upon the lexical approach used by Theme/Doc. We found that LSA helps identify useful concern clusters, and helps reduce the number of falsely identified aspectual requirements. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

object-oriented programming has worked quite well - so far. What are the objects, how do they relate to each other? Once we clarified these questions we typically feel confident to design and implement even the most complex systems. However, objects can deceive us. They can lure us into a false sense of understanding. The metaphor of objects can go too far by making us try to create objects that are too much inspired by the real world. This is a serious problem, as a resulting system may be significantly more complex than it would have to be, or worse, will not work at all. We postulate the notion of an antiobject as a kind of object that appears to essentially do the opposite of what we generally think the object should be doing. As a Gedankenexperiment antiobjects allow us to literally think outside the proverbial box or, in this case outside the object. This article discusses two examples, a Pacman game and a soccer simulation where antiobjects are employed as part of a game AI called Collaborative Diffusion. In Collaborative-Diffusion based soccer the player and grass tile agents are antiobjects. Counter to the intuition of most programmers the grass tile agents, on top of which all the players are moving, are doing the vast majority of the computation, while the soccer player agents are doing almost no computation. This article illustrates that this role reversal is not only a different way to look at objects but, for instance, in the case with Collaborative Diffusion, is simple to implement, incremental in nature and more robust than traditional approaches.

Though object-oriented Analysis, Design, and languages have become the dominant practices in many, or most, domains of software engineering, concerns about complexity, size, and performance in the embedded, real-time software domain have led to a prevalent view that OO technology is not suitable for the domain. We challenge this view through a successful application of OOA, OOD, and C++ (including STL) in the embedded, real-time flight software in an Earth-orbiting science instrument named Aquarius (see [1]). We've found that OOA and OOD with UML actually enhance communication with systems and hardware engineers. We also found that C++, thoughtfully used, need not lead to code bloat, and that its performance is every bit as good as that of C. We egin with an overview of the requirements and describe our overall use of UML modeling, followed by a discussion of the use of UML for object-oriented Analysis with use cases. Then the application of UML for high-level and detailed design, the use of frameworks supporting a component architecture and multi-platform execution, and code generation from UML detailed design are described. We also present the use of UML for organizing and designing and documenting our verification and test environment and scenarios, and using HTML, generated by our UML tool, for all documentation and for requirement traceability. Finally, we discuss the use of C++ as the implementation language, and give an overview of status and work metrics.

Agile software development practices including XP and Scrum have risen to prominence within the software engineering community over the past ten years. Are agile software development practices converging? Are some practices becoming more integrated and/or more widely adopted than others? In the early 90s there was a convergence of object-oriented design methodologies - is a similar pattern being repeated within the agile software development community? Several years ago conferences featured debates on the number of practices inherent to XP - or for that matter what constituted XP. Is the Agile community on the verge of converging to standardization or do individual practices retain their individually and evangelists/disciples? A somewhat related question is: Can an agile practice be applied out of the box or is some assembly required? What does it take to get agility going in an organization? Does it work as advertised? What practices work and play well with others? Hear the experiences of panelists in their attempts to actually make agile work in the real world. From Crystal, DSDM, FDD, LEAN, Scrum, to XP (and others) - participants will to share their perspectives and experiences. Be warned - this fishbowl will be stocked with piranhas.

This paper details the application of Software Product Lines (SPL) 16 and Model-Driven Engineering (MDE)15 to the software defined radio domain. More specifically it is an experience report emphasizing the synergy 17 resulting from combining MDE and SPL technologies. The software defined radio domain has very unique characteristics as its systems typically are a confluence of a number of typically challenging aspects of software development. To name a few, these systems are usually described by modifiers such as, embedded, real-time, distributed, object-oriented, portable, heterogeneous, multithreaded, high performance, dynamic, resource-constrained, safety-critical, secure, networked, component based and fault-tolerant. Each one of these modifiers by themselves carries with it a set of unique challenges, but building systems characterized by all of these modifiers all at the same time makes for a daunting task in software development. In addition to all of these, it is quite common in these embedded systems for components to have multiple implementations that must run on disparate processing elements. With all of this taken into account, it stands to reason that these systems could and should benefit greatly from advances in software technology such as product line engineering, domain-specific modeling and model-driven engineering. It is our experience that one big benefit to the software development industry is the combination of the Software Product Lines and Model Driven Engineering technologies.

Adding to and restructuring the design of a large existing code base is known to be a difficult and time consuming task. There are methods for assisting these challenges, such as composition refactoring, reengineering, and anti-patterns detection methods. Most of these methods concentrate on specific perspectives of software *** practical paper presents the Composition Refactoring Triangle (CRT) unified approach for handling multiple changes across complex environments. The CRT is a combination of: the process (CRP), the management tool (CRMT), and the external and internal refactoring elements. The CRT was constructed during on-going need to implement major changes within a living product. This paper contains the "Via Delarosa" - The "Path of Suffering" which describes the road of how the CRT was created, and why other methods *** evaluation was conducted using the CRT, demonstrating its capabilities. The unified perspectives of the CRT enable improved risk analysis and technical control over multiple architectural evolution changes and their relative dependencies. Its implementation encourages quick testing procedure, code correctness, and short time-to-market response of the development team.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is attracting attention from both research and industry, as illustrated by the ever-growing popularity of AspectJ, the de facto standard AOP extension of Java. From a compiler construction perspective AspectJ is interesting as it is a typical example of compositional language, ie a language composed of a number of separate languages with different syntactical styles: in addition to plain Java, AspectJ includes a language for defining pointcuts and one for defining advices. Language composition represents a non-trivial challenge for conventional parsing techniques. First, combining several languages with different lexical syntax leads to considerable complexity in the lexical states to processed. Second, as new language features for AOP are being explored, many research proposals are concerned with further extending the AspectJ language, resulting in a need for an extensible syntax *** paper shows how scannerless parsing elegantly addresses the issues encountered by conventional techniques when parsing AspectJ . We present the design of a modular, extensible, and formal definition of the lexical and context-free aspects of the AspectJ syntax in the Syntax Definition Formalism SDF, which is implemented by a scannerless, generalized-LR parser (SGLR). We introduce grammar mixins as a novel application of SDF's modularity features, which allows the declarative definition of different keyword policies and combination of extensions. We illustrate the modular extensibility of our definition with syntax extensions taken from current research on aspect languages. Finally, benchmarks show the reasonable performance of scannerless generalized-LR parsing for this grammar. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) and Feature-oriented programming (FOP) are complementary technologies that can be combined to overcome their individual limitations. Aspectual Mixin Layers (AML) is a representative approach that unifies AOP and FOP. We use AML in a non-trivial case study to create a product line of overlay networks. We also present a set of guidelines to assist programmers in how and when to use AOP and FOP techniques for implementing product lines in a stepwise and generative manner. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

With the advent of the objects-first approach for introductory programming, instructors are challenged to think differently regarding the projects and exercises they create for their classrooms. The objects-first approach reduces the emphasis on syntax and encourages the student to focus upon the proper construction and use of classes. This change in emphasis means that students must understand the relationships between classes within a code solution and how such relationships affect the overall design of a system. Unfortunately, such critical thinking exercises can prove challenging to the introductory student, especially if presented in an manner. In this paper, the authors examine how fundamental principles such as inheritance, composition, and association can be conveyed to introductory programming students within a collaborative virtual environment. The examples chosen follow established guidelines for objects-first examples while leveraging features of an engaging, three-dimensional interactive environment.

The proxy abstraction has a longlasting tradition in object settings. From design pattern to inherent language support, from remote method invocations to simple forms of behavioral reflection - incarnations as well as applications of proxies are *** version 1.3, Java supports the concept of dynamic proxy. Such an object conforms to a set of types specified by the program and can be used wherever an expression of any of these types is expected, yet reifies invocations performed on it. Dynamic proxies have been applied to implement paradigms as diverse as behavioral reflection, structural conformance, or multi-methods. Alas, these proxies are only available "for interfaces". The case of creating dynamic proxies for a set of types including a class type has not been considered, meaning that it is currently not possible to create a dynamic proxy mimicking an instance of a given class. This weakness strongly limits any application of dynamic *** this paper we unfold the current support for dynamic proxies in Java, assessing it in the light of a set of generic criteria for proxy implementations. We present an approach to supporting dynamic proxies "for classes" in Java, consisting in transformations performed on classes at load-time, including a generic scheme for enforcing encapsulation upon field accesses. These transformations seemlessly extend the scope of the current support for dynamic proxies. We discuss the precise benefits and costs of our extension in terms of the criteria introduced, and illustrate the usefulness of uniformly available proxies by implementing future method invocations both safely and transparently.
