The NetBeans Platform is the open-source NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE) less those modules that make it a development tool. The platform is a "generic application" - a runtime which can be used to develop *** of the key distinctions of software built upon the NetBeans Platform is modularity - reuse in the large. Such software is designed as logical sets of macro-components which integrate through well-defined API contracts. Writing modular applications brings some enhancements to programming in standard Java - particularly the ability to have Java classes which are only public to other classes within the archive they reside in. This has a number of beneficial effects on development - in particular, the ability to develop cleaner, simpler APIs by being able to fully conceal implementation from foreign code, while retaining *** workshop will cover developing on the NetBeans Platform from the ground-up. We will start with non-GUI applications - simply making use of the module system - the core runtime of the NetBeans platform. After that, we will cover basic patterns and commonly used APIs. The afternoon will be spent on developing a real software application which consists of multiple, decoupled modules;participants are encouraged to come with specific ideas for applications they would be interested in exploring in a modular environment.

Lightweight dynamic language runtimes have become popular in part because they simply integrate with a wide range of native code libraries and embedding applications. However, further development of these runtimes in the areas of concurrency, efficiency and safety is impeded by the desire to maintain their native code interfaces, even at a source level. Native extension modules' lack of thread safety is a significant barrier to dynamic languages' effective deployment on current and future multicore and multiprocessor systems. We propose the use of hardware transactional memory (HTM) to aid runtimes in evolving more capable and robust execution models while maintaining native code compatibility. To explore these ideas, we constructed a full-system simulation infrastructure consisting of an HTM implementation, modified Linux kernel and Python *** includes thread constructs, but its primary implementation is not architected to support their parallel execution. With small changes, a runtime can be made HTM-aware to enable parallel execution of Python code and extension modules. We exploit the semantics of Python execution to evaluate individual bytecodes atomically by default, using nested transactions to emulate programmer-specified locking constructs where possible in existing threaded code. We eliminate common transactional conflicts and defer I/O within transactions to make parallel Python execution both possible and efficient. Transactions also provide safety for foreign function invocations. We characterize several small Python applications executing on our infrastructure.

Understanding the behavior of applications running on high-level language virtual machines, as is the case in Java, is non-trivial because of the tight entanglement at the lowest execution level between the application and the virtual machine. This paper proposes Javana, a system for building Java program analysis tools. Javana provides an easy-to-use instrumentation infrastructure that allows for building customized profiling tools very *** runs a dynamic binary instrumentation tool underneath the virtual machine. The virtual machine communicates with the instrumentation layer through an event handling mechanism for building a vertical map that links low-level native instruction pointers and memory addresses to high-level language concepts such as objects, methods, threads, lines of code, etc. The dynamic binary instrumentation tool then intercepts all memory accesses and instructions executed and provides the Javana end user with high-level language information for all memory accesses and natively executed *** demonstrate the power of Javana through a number of applications: memory address tracing, vertical cache simulation and object lifetime computation. For each of these applications, the instrumentation specification requires only a small number of lines of code. Developing similarly powerful profiling tools within a virtual machine (as done in current practice) is both time-consuming and error-prone;in addition, the accuracy of the obtained profiling results might be questionable as we show in this paper. We present an overview of JTL (the Java Tools Language, pronounced "Gee-tel"), a novel language for querying JAVA [8] programs. JTL was designed to serve the development of source code software tools for JAVA, and as a small language to aid programming language extensions to JAVA . applications include definition of pointcuts for aspect-oriented programming, fixing type constraints for generic programming, specification of encapsulation policies, definition of micro-patterns, etc. We argue that the JTL expression of each of these is systematic, concise, intuitive and general. JTL relies on a simply-typed relational database for program representation, rather than an abstract syntax tree. The underlying semantics of the language is restricted to queries formulated in First Order Predicate Logic augmented with transitive closure (FOPL* ). Special effort was taken to ensure terse, yet readable expression of logical conditions. TheJTL patternpublic abstract class, for example, matches all abstract classes which are publicly accessible, while class { public clone();} matches all classes in which method clone is public. To this end, JTL relies on a DATALOG -like syntax and semantics, enriched with quantifiers and pattern matching which all but entirely eliminate the need for recursive calls. JTL's query analyzer gives special attention to the fragility of the "closed world assumption" in examining JAVA software, and determines whether a query relies on such an assumption. The performance of the JTL interpreter is comparable to that of JQuery after it generated its database cache, and at least an order of magnitude faster when the cache has to be rebuilt. Generic programming has emerged as an important technique for the development of highly reusable and efficient software libraries. In C++, generic programming is enabled by the flexibility of templates, the C++ type parametrization mechanism. However, the power of templates comes with a price: generic (template) libraries can be more difficult to use and develop than non-template libraries and their misuse results in notoriously confusing error messages. As currently defined in C++98, templates are unconstrained, and type-checking of templates is performed late in the compilation process, i.e., after the use of a template has been combined with its definition. To improve the support for generic programming in C++, we introduce concepts to express the syntactic and semantic behavior of types and to constrain the type parameters in a C++ template. Using concepts, type-checking of template definitions is separated from their uses, thereby making templates easier to use and easier to compile. These improvements are achieved without limiting the flexibility of templates or decreasing their performance - in fact their expressive power is increased. This paper describes the language extensions supporting concepts, their use in the expression of the C++ Standard Template Library, and their implementation in the ConceptGCC compiler. Concepts are candidates for inclusion in the upcoming revision of the ISO C++ standard, C++0x. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

We describe a graphical programming system for a domain specific language in biosequence analysis. It supports the development of programs for RNA structure prediction and motif search, created by biologists with little or no programming skills. The system combines several programming paradigms in a productive way. It has a client - server architecture, with a transport layer in XML. The graphical front-end is implemented in the object-oriented paradigm (using Java). Graphics are compiled into a declarative domain-specific language for dynamic programming (ADP) that is embedded in Haskell. Finally, motif search programs expressed in ADP are compiled to imperative code in C, a step which includes substantial domain-specific optimization. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

Since benchmarks drive computer science research and industry product development, which ones we use and how we evaluate them are key questions for the community. Despite complex runtime tradeoffs due to dynamic compilation and garbage collection required for Java programs, many evaluations still use methodologies developed for C, C++, and Fortran. SPEC, the dominant purveyor of benchmarks, compounded this problem by institutionalizing these methodologies for their Java benchmark suite. This paper recommends benchmarking selection and evaluation methodologies, and introduces the DaCapo benchmarks, a set of open source, client-side Java benchmarks. We demonstrate that the complex interactions of (1) architecture, (2) compiler, (3) virtual machine, (4) memory management, and (5) application require more extensive evaluation than C, C++, and Fortran which stress (4) much less, and do not require (3). We use and introduce new value, time-series, and statistical metrics for static and dynamic properties such as code complexity, code size, heap composition, and pointer mutations. No benchmark suite is definitive, but these metrics show that DaCapo improves over SPEC Java in a variety of ways, including more complex code, richer object behaviors, and more demanding memory system requirements. This paper takes a step towards improving methodologies for choosing and evaluating benchmarks to foster innovation in system design and implementation for Java and other managed languages. Code instrumentation is finding more and more practical applications, but the required program transformations are often difficult to implement, due to the lack of dedicated, high-level tools. In this paper we present a novel instrumentation framework that supports the partial evaluation of compiled Java code transformation templates, with the goal of efficiently measuring chosen dynamic bytecode and control flow metrics. This framework, as well as the instrumentation code it generates, is implemented in pure Java and hence completely platform-independent. We show the benefits of our approach in several application areas, such as platform-independent resource management and profiling of software components. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

Component containers are a key part of mainstream component technologies, and play an important role in separating non-functional concerns from the core component logic. This paper addresses two different aspects of containers. First, it shows how generative programming techniques, using AspectC++ and meta-programming, can be used to generate stubs and skeletons without the need for special compilers or interface description languages. Second, the paper describes an approach to create custom containers by composing different non-functional features. Unlike component technologies such as EJB, which only support a predefined set of container types, this approach allows different combinations of non-functional features to be composed in a container to meet the application needs.
