A novel application on the recently emerging Personal Communication Services (PCS) networks is the multimedia communication. In this paper, we evaluate multimedia communications capability of one of the PCS standards, Personal Access Communications System's (PACS) packet channel (PPC) using simulation modeling. The performance of PPC's slot aggregation and data-sense multiple access techniques are studied by considering the downlink and uplink in a single cell and combined uplink/downlink in two cells and changing various parameters such as the number of users and certain protocol parameters. Interconnection of PPC with the Internet is discussed next. Frame rates of MPEG-1 coded images transmitted in a PACS cell as IP datagrams are determined. Handover characteristics of PPC downlink are studied by changing different parameters such as the cell size, the speed of the mobile host and time between handovers. The results clearly establish that multimedia communication on PPC is only feasible at lower bandwidths and frame rates and only a few users per cell can be supported. Careful tuning of PPC protocol parameters are required. There is one parameter whose variation gives opposite results on the downlink and uplink.

The rapidly increasing number of tools available on the Internet is changing the way people view software systems. People are now used to downloading plug in helper tools in order to decode and display different types of media within web browsers. The ease with which this can now be done is a far cry from the days, quite recently, when data had to be manually processed by a number of obviously independent software packages. Using the tools available to simply decode and display new data formats is only one way in which such software can be used, one could even consider a web browser as just another tool. Complete new applications could be constructed by selecting a suitable range of tools and supplying minimal glue software. This paper describes, as an example of this approach, a collaborative application supporting synchronous audio-visual communication and collaborative web browsing. The system developed is designed to make use of a wide range of freely available tools with no modification of existing web servers or clients. Alternative implementation strategies are discussed, followed by a detailed description of the approach chosen for this implementation. A technique allowing small to medium sized groups World Wide Web users to be tracked and their location to be presented to people with similar interests is then explained, followed by details of a mechanism allowing the information gained about such groups to be shared among arbitrary numbers of similar groups. Finally a brief critique of the system is presented along with ideas for future developments.

Users desire to use multimedia applications such as browsing WWW and VoD in not only desktop computing environment but also wireless or mobile computing environment. A wireless link, however, is generally poor in quality to accommodate multimedia communication. We propose a content-based multimedia communication protocol for wireless environment. It adopts the selective transport service according to content-based priority, assigned to each scene of multimedia data, so that a user can get important information even if available bandwidth is insufficient for the multimedia data.

QoS support is necessary for nearly every communication between computers. We present an approach for supporting request response communication behavior with particular respect to an ATM LAN environment. The goal is to extend the RPC protocol with mechanisms for QoS-specification mapping and -monitoring for the effective transmission of data in such an ATM environment. As a first basis for validating our conceptual work, we present a facility to transmit multimedia data by extending the RPC pipe mechanism.

Recent advances in high performance computers and high speed broadband networks have opened the realms of exciting new enterprise wide multimedia applications. Broadband multimedia applications over enterprise networks requires appropriate communication protocols and enhanced networking infrastructure to provide sufficient quality of service. Our paper presents an architecture of a communication system for manufacturing multimedia applications. The architecture guarantees better quality of service for real-time multimedia applications. It is based on an ATM intelligent network interface board based on a processor and a field programmable gate array components. The board implements flexible high-level real-time data services and relieves the host from networking load. The board implements a manufacturing message specification (MMS) multimedia application service element.

We have developed a technique based on pattern matching technology which can be used to create hyperlinks between analog content played back on analog sequential media and interactive data on a computer, and developed a new "WebSync" system with this technique. The WebSync system allows users to obtain a synchronized view of analog content and computer data. The process of producing a hyperlink for analog content has novel features which enable hyperlinks to be established accurately, rapidly and flexibly. This paper describes these features and experiments conducted on the WebSync system.

Telecooperation means to fulfil different tasks within distributed (study-) groups with the help of multimedia communication services and systems, so-called telecooperation systems (Tcoop system). The immense progress in the underlying information and telecommunication technology increases the functionality, variability, and complexity of such Tcoop systems. In addition there is a great demand for Tcoop systems individually tailored to the customer's need in an increasingly competitive market. Provider of telecommunication services traditionally have used computer-based support systems to fulfil parts of this task. However, up to now advantage has seldom been taken of a model-based approach to this problem which could help to cover the whole process. This paper is concerned with the concepts, the architecture, the representation, and the semantics of a reference model used for this purpose and shows how the configuration of the Tcoop system can be based on that.

In a multimedia news on demand application, the delivery of multiple streams of data over a network will introduce inevitable delays and delay variations that disrupt both inter- and intra-media synchronization. Therefore, a complete stream synchronization protocol must be specified and tested to ensure proper rendering of the multimedia presentation at the client. In such a protocol, special treatment should be considered for time dependent coded data streams due to the presence of a hardware/software decoding entity at the client. We propose a client based control scheme using buffer occupancy as its main parameter. The control scheme uses time contraction and expansion concepts to: avoid data overflow or underflow conditions; and enforce intra-media synchrony of the data stream. We refer to such a control mechanism as the predecoder synchronization controller. We consider both motion JPEG and MPEG video bit streams and discuss the implementation and architectural constraints encountered.

This paper discusses emerging directions of enterprise networks (ENs). Technological, policy-related, and architectural viewpoints are used to discuss the evolution of the ENs. Various phases of life-cycle of the ENs are then reviewed. An integrated, reliable, high bandwidth, scalable and multimedia transport net based architecture is envisioned for next generation ENs (NGENs). The users of NGENs would have more direct control over the configuration and quality of service they subscribe to.
