In this paper, we identify the service interworking scenarios and architecture to provide a virtual server in heterogeneous network environment. The middleMEN is proposed to be an effective architecture for service interworking of some sophisticated multimedia application. We also present main technique developed to achieve this architecture. To realize the proposed service concept, we implement the video caching acts as a proxy server for real time video service.

multimedia interfaces are rapidly evolving to facilitate human/machine communication. Most of the technologies on which they are based are, as yet, imperfect. But, the interfaces do begin to allow information exchange in ways familiar and comfortable to the human-principally through natural actions in the sensory dimensions of sight, sound and touch. Further, as digital networking becomes ubiquitous, the opportunity grows for collaborative work through conferenced computing. In this context the machine takes on the role of mediator in human/machine/human communication-the ideal being to extend the intellectual abilities of humans through access to distributed information resources and collective decision making. The challenge is how to design machine mediation so that it extends, not impedes, human abilities. This report describes evolving work to incorporate multimodal interfaces into a networked system for collaborative distributed computing. It also addresses strategies for quantifying the synergies that may be gained.

We propose a scalable service networking architecture as a TINA-like environment for providing various mobility services. The proposed architecture provides an environment that enables the advent of service providers and rapidly introduces multimedia applications, considering network scalability. For supporting customized mobility services, this architecture adopts a new service component, which we call Omnipresent Personal Environment Manager (OpeMgr). In order to support mobile users who move between heterogeneous networks, for instance, between the TINA-like environment and the Internet environment, we propose a structure of a gateway. In addition, the proposed architecture uses the fixed and mobile agent approaches for supporting the user's mobility and we evaluated their performance comparing those approaches.

Although the bandwidth of the storage I/O typically dictates the performance of a conventional DBMS, network-I/O bandwidth limitation is the main operating constraint of most multimedia database systems. In spite of the fact that the throughput of a public network (e.g. ATM) can be huge, the network-I/O bottleneck limits the number of client stations a media server can support simultaneously. A possible solution to this problem is to batch requests for the same video and multicast the data to these requesters to save the network I/O bandwidth. A disadvantage of this scheme is that it unfairly forces requests arriving early in a batch to wait for the latecomers. As a result, the reneging rate can be high in a system which employs this technique. To reduce the long access latency, we examine in this paper a new batching mechanism called chaining. This approach allows the server to serve a "chain" of client stations using a single data stream. The idea is to pipeline the data stream through the chain of stations. Requests arriving early in a chain (virtual batch), therefore, do not have to experience long delays as in conventional batching. Our simulation results based on an ATM networking environment indicate that very significant performance improvement over batching can be obtained.

Describes the usage of a distributed processing environment (DPE) based on CORBA 2 with respect to distribution transparencies. We sketch a multimedia telecommunication service-T-MMCS (TINA multimedia Conferencing System)-based on the TINA-C (Telecommunication Information networking Architecture Consortium) concepts and our experience with using CORBA 2 implementations-Orbix and Hewlett-Packard Distributed Smalltalk (HPDST)-as DPEs for this application. At the moment, the CORBA scene is changing very rapidly. New products are arising and interoperability between products is increasing due to corrections in the implementations. More and more CORBA services are supported. The CORBA standards are also being extended and more services are being defined. These changes are happening rapidly. Therefore, we present the newest developments that have taken place and our newest experiences.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks are scalable via a wide variety of physical link speeds and can be run in both the local and wide areas. Bandwidth reservation and quality of service guarantees make ATM attractive to deliver multimedia information in real-time. Existing protocol suites can be extended. However, they do not give access to those characteristics. Therefore, applications demand an ATM application programming interface (API) to take advantage of those features. This paper covers a special syntax mapping of the ATM API services on top of X/Open Transport Interface (XTI) which is able to give applications access directly to the special quality and traffic services of an ATM network. A particular realization of the API on the XTI environment is proposed and implemented on the MacOS networking platform. It provides a flexible and modular design of the ATM networking. Finally, the paper concludes with one ATM-aware application (video on demand) which requires real-time streaming data.

Welcome to the third International conference on Management of multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS'2000) in Fortaleza (Brazil)! The first MMNS was held in Montreal ( Canada) in july 1997 and the second MMNS was held in Versailles (France) in November 1998. The MMNS conference takes place every year and a half and is aimed to be a truly international event by bringing together researchers and practitioners from all around the world and by organising the conference each time in a different continent/country. Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of research within the fields of multimedianetworking and network management. Much of that work has taken place within the context of managing Quality-of Service in broadband integrated services digital networks such as the A TM, and more recently in IP-based networks, to respond to the requirements of emerging multimedia applications. A TM networks were designed to support multimedia traffic with diverse characteristics and can be used as the transfer mode for both wired and wireless networks. A new set of Internet protocols is being developed to provide better quality of service, which is a prerequisite for supporting multimedia applications. multimedia applications have a different set of requirements, which impacts the design of the underlying communication network as well as its management. Several QoS management mechanisms intervening at different layers of the communication network are required including QoS-routing, QoS-based transport, QoS negotiation, QoS adaptation, FCAPS management, and mobility management.
