To provide ubiquitous access to applications, the QoS and computing requirements of the various components of the application must adapt.,The authors argue that the appropriate techniques for providing adaptive interfaces is through open implementation, in which the abstractions to control behaviour are couched in the language of the component, not some generic QoS definition language. They describe how open implementation techniques can be applied to determining QoS configuration, and report on their experiences in implementing such an architecture for low bandwidth access to networked multimedia.

The authors present a novel approach to building and deploying network protocols. The approach is based on mobile code, demand loading, and caching techniques. The architecture of the system allows new protocols to be dynamically deployed at both routers and end systems, without the need for coordination and without unwanted interaction between co-existing protocols. They describe the architecture and its realization in a prototype implementation. To demonstrate how to exploit the architecture, they present two simple protocols that operate within the prototype to introduce multicast and mobility services into a network that initially lacks them.

Active networks carry SmartPackets that contain both data and user-specified methods to extend the functionality of switches to perform user-specific computation on the encapsulated data. This enables rapid customization of the network and provides a mechanism to adapt the network to a changing environment. We describe the implementation of a prototype active network that is implemented in Java. We also illustrate the use of active networks to provide enhanced services at both the network and application levels.

The paper introduces a generic object model that makes instances of a network service accessible to the management system. This way, an open interface between the service delivery and the service management systems is defined. The model includes a set of cooperating objects that can be customized for particular service and management requirements. By applying this model to the design of mcast, an ATM multicast service, the authors enable the management system to monitor and control mcast sessions. To validate their approach, they have implemented mcast and the management functions on two different platforms: (1) on a high-performance emulation platform, which allows one to study the system's dynamic behavior and scaling properties in various scenarios; (2) on a broadband testbed running xbind, on which network services can be fully implemented, including the transport between multimedia devices. CORBA technology is used for building the service control system as well as the management system.

The introduction of user and terminal mobility into private communication networks requires the provision of mobility management services. They handle the dynamic locations of mobile users and terminals and maintain the allocation of personal service profiles. The author is developing an open mobility management platform that contains a set of support functions and APIs on which mobility management services can be easily built. The platform performs location and profile handling based on distributed X.500 directory services and implements the required mobility management signalling protocols based on X.500 and LDAP directory access protocols. Additionally the platform offers three mobility abstraction levels that he uses to build mobile and location-aware multimedia applications. He developed a multi-master replication protocol for the directory servers inside the platform to fulfil the demanding performance and availability requirements of corporate networks. The mobility management services built on this platform can be easily customised to changing and evolving requirements and the platform functionality can be extended due to the generic directory service approach.
