digital MIMO receivers featuring digitization at each element are critical for (massive) MIMO applications since they support complex space-time signal processing. However, the lack of spatial selectivity in the analog/RF domain necessitates high-dynamic-range analog-to-digital converters (A/Ds) to accommodate the uneven spatial power distribution, limiting the scale of such MIMO systems. This paper reviews analog/RF spatial filtering techniques that have been proposed in recent years to address this problem. A scalable spatial notch suppression technique allows the synthesis of a steerable spatial notch, which eliminates the strongest in-band spatial block in the analog/RF domain. The spatial notch is synthesized in the baseband, and the impedance transparency of passive mixers is used to translate the notch to the antenna interface. In a second prototype, a more general arbitrary spatial filter (ASF) adaptively filters the spatial domain signals to equalize the power levels across all directions. Current mode operation ensures superior linearity and ultra-wideband spatial suppression. Measurements from CMOS prototypes have been provided to verify the claims.

Physiological investigations of the structure and function of the normal auditory system are technologically demanding, requiring electronic devices for generating and processing acoustic signals and for detecting, capturing and processing neural responses. Controllers for such custom electronic devices in physiological laboratories must be robust, configurable and embed-able. Recent advances in embedded systems have provided such a flexible, low-cost and reconfigurable technology: the programmable system-on-chip (PSoC), which integrates a microcontroller with programmable analogue and digital functions in a single chip. This makes it an ideal technology to be embedded in experimental equipment to allow flexible computer control. Using PSoC technology it is possible for a single design of circuit board and firmware to control multiple applications such as attenuation, filtering and amplification. Application programs to control devices, log and process data can be developed using various software environments. In the current application, a single driver was developed for multiple software environments such as Matlab, BrainWare or Visual Studio. Here we describe an instantiation of an embedded PSoC based hardware solution with appropriate firmware that provides full accurate and precise control of a very complex and sophisticated auditory physiological laboratory that includes attenuators, low-pass filters and amplifiers.

Summary form only given: Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems with digital beam forming are essential to realizing cognitive and software defined radios. Concurrently, advances in digital signal processing hardware and algorithms have allowed for increased data rate handling, large memory blocks, and adaptivity. Therefore, these digital back-ends have drastically reduced the complexity of digital beamforming. Consequently, techniques such as monopulsing, multiple beams and null steering can be employed for phased arrays and MIMO based antennas. Even more important is the realization of beam forming across large, nearly 10:1, bandwidths as is the case here. A novel on-site coding receiver (OSCR) architecture was recently proposed to significantly reduce the intense hardware and power requirement for digital beamforming [Alwan et. al., Springer, 2013]. More specifically, the proposed OSCR employs a code division multiplexing (CDM) technique and a single ADC serving a group of array elements. The latter concept significantly reduces power requirements as it eliminates the need for a single ADC serving each antenna element. Instead, we employ CDM prior to combining the signal paths into a single ADC. The employed CDM technique amounts to mixing each signal with a unique orthogonal Walsh-Hadamard code. These codes serve to identify the signal as associated with a specific antenna element. At the digital back-end, code decorrelation must be carried out to recover the signal associated with each array element path. In this paper, we present a four channel hardware implementation of the proposed OSCR receiver integrated with a FPGA design for digital beamforming. The aforementioned encoding/decoding is accomplished using the Virtex 7 family: XC7VX485T series FPGAs through VHDL codes and external clock synchronization. High Speed Multichannel Charge Sensitive Data Acquisition System With Self-Triggered Event Timing

A number of modern experiments require simultaneous measurement of charges on multiple channels at > MHz event rates with an accuracy of 100-1000 e(-) rms. One widely used data processing scheme relies on application of specific integrated circuits enabling multichannel analog peak detection asserted by an external trigger followed by a serial/sparsified readout. Although this configuration minimizes the back end electronics, its counting rate capability is limited by the speed of the serial readout. Recent advances in analog to digital converters and FPGA devices enable fully parallel high speed multichannel data processing with digital peak detection enhanced by finite impulse response filtering. Not only can accurate charge values be obtained at high event rates, but the timing of the event on each channel can also be determined with high accuracy. We present the concept and first experimental tests of fully parallel 128-channel charge sensitive data processing electronics capable of measuring charges with an accuracy of similar to 1000 e- rms. Our system does not require an external trigger and, in addition to charge values, it provides the event timing with an accuracy of similar to 1 ns FWHM. One of the possible applications of this system is high resolution position sensitive event counting detectors with microchannel plates combined with cross strip readout. Implementation of fast data acquisition electronics increases the counting rates of those detectors to multi-MHz level, preserving their unique capability of virtually noiseless detection of both position (with an accuracy of similar to 10 mu m FWHM) and timing (similar to 1 ns;FWHM) of individual particles, including photons, electrons, ions, neutrals, and neutrons.

Coefficient-symmetries for implementing arbitrary-order Lagrange-type variable fractional-delay digital filters

In this paper, we first derive an explicit formula for expressing the coefficients of an arbitrary-order Lagrange-type variable fractional-delay (VFD) digital filter as polynomials of the VFD parameter p, and then develop some useful symmetries for both even- and odd-order Lagrange-type VFD filter coefficients. The coefficient-symmetries facilitate the evaluations of VFD filter coefficients as well as variable frequency responses with reduced computational complexity. More importantly, the coefficient-symmetries can be exploited for efficiently implementing both even- and odd-order Lagrange-type VFD filters as Farrow structure and a more efficient one called even-odd structure such that the subfilters have symmetric or anti-symmetric coefficients, which saves the storage for VFD filter coefficients and reduces the number of multiplications required in VFD filtering process by almost 50%. Therefore, exploiting the coefficient-symmetries not only speeds up the VFD filtering, but also reduces implementation cost.

Significant advances have been made in recent years in the development of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and their exploitation in computational electromagnetics. In the widest sense, one could include in this category various techniques such as neural networks, genetic algorithms etc. In this paper we focus however in reviewing the application of signal processing techniques to solve particular EMC problems. Two specific problems are addressed. First, the use of modal expansion techniques (MET) is described as applied to the interfacing of thin wires to large electromagnetic models described by a coarse mesh. MET allows accurate placement and description of thin wires irrespective of the mesh spatial resolution. Second, the use of digital filtering interface (DFI) is discussed as applied to the description in time-domain models of general material properties and other features with frequency-dependent properties. It is shown that advanced signal processing techniques can increase substantially the accuracy and efficiency of numerical solvers.
