Autonomous dirigibles - aerial robots that are a blimp controlled by computer based on information gathered by sensors - are a new and promising research field in Robotics, offering several original work opportunities. One of them is the study of visual navigation, that would allow an autonomous dirigible to follow precise trajectories based on environmental visual information imaged by on-board cameras. The first step in the direction of the developing of such a capacity is the creation of a computer vision.system able to supply to the autonomous dirigible its position and orientation in tridimensional space from the acquired images. This project describes such a system, capable of estimating position and orientation from images of visual beacons - objects with known geometrical properties and recognizable by the system. Experimental results showing the correct and efficient functioning of the system are shown and have your implications and future possibilities discussed.

This paper presents a system for three-dimensional image reconstruction based on the combination of both adaptive and wavelet reconstruction method and the use of B-wavelets function for interpolation. Results show the usefulness of the system in three-dimensional image reconstruction and also after interpolation with data obtained by X and gamma-rays computerized minitomograph scanner for soil science developed at the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA - Agricultural Instrumentation). Also for two-dimensional some advantages were observed of the developed system when compared with the filtered backprojection method for a particular set of phantom. The system was developed in Pascal and C/C++ languages under a Windows environment.

The main purpose of image processing and analysis is, often, to segment the image into objects in order to analyze the geometrical properties and the structure of the objects and recognize them. The analysis of the geometric objects must be quantitative, because only such an analysis and description of the geometric objects can provide a coherent mathematical framework for describing the spatial organization. The quantitative description of geometrical structures is the objective of mathematical morphology. So far, the use of such framework has allowed the development of a class of algorithms to deal with binary and grayscale images. Multi-channel processing has been of growing interest recently, especially in color image processing. In this paper, the extension of mathematical morphology to color images by treating multi-channel data as vectors are presented. An overview of several approaches to this extension using different ordering relations is also provided. Basic vector morphological algorithms are introduced based on reduced ordering. We also present experimental results and show that these algorithms can be easily mapped into the generic-programming framework.

This study presents a technique for quantitative enhancement of both linear attenuation coefficients and visual features of maps obtained from multiple energies using tomographic systems. The quality of images obtained by computerized X-ray tomography in multiple energies is limited due to the number of noise pixels in the images. The method developed here uses enhancement techniques with adaptative filtering that aims for results comparable to those obtained by single energy computerized tomography. The improvement achieved in the processed images confirms that this method is suitable for analyses of multiple energies with loss of pixel to pixel information, where information on density and material humidity assayed tomographically can be obtained accurately in the acceptable error range of single energy tomography.

This paper presents a system for automatic extraction of the user-entered data from Brazilian bankchecks. We have assumed that the layout structure of bankchecks is standardized, that any bankcheck can be identified through the MICR line and that a sample of the background pattern is available for every bankcheck. Based on these assumptions, a template is designed for extracting the user-entered items of any bankcheck, no mattering which financial institution has issued it. First, the bankcheck is digitized through a scanner and its skew angle is computed by an algorithm based on the Hough transform. Next a template is generated and used for extracting the user-entered data. The extracted data still shows the presence of the background pattern, character strings, and vertical and horizontal lines. The background pattern is eliminated by a morphological subtraction operation while the baselines are erased using an algorithm based on the projection profiles. The printed character strings are eliminated through a morphological subtraction between the image covered by the signature area and a sample of the character strings generated by the system. Finally, a post-processing algorithm is used for recovering some erased pixels. Experimental results show that this approach is robust and efficient for automatic extracting the user-entered items from Brazilian bankchecks achieving a moderate processing time, very good image quality and excellent accuracy rates.

This paper describes a novel method for recovering the perspective geometry of textured surfaces from local spectral analysis. We recover 3-D orientation of planar surfaces based on angular properties of the local spectral description of the surface markings. We also show a geometrical relationship between local spectral components and the vanishing point of the texture plane. Our method is a two-step process. We commence by identifying contours which connect the local spectral moments of equal power. Tilt direction can be estimated from the energy gradient described in the perpendicular direction to these contours. The second step is to correlate points with the same angular spectral distribution. Points with the same angular spectral configuration will lie on a line pointing to a vanishing point. This allows us to estimate the direction of the vanishing point at different positions on the image plane. In this way we can use a sample of spectral moments to estimate the vanishing point location.

computer animation is a multifaceted field of computer graphics. This presentation explores one of these facets. At first computer animation is surveyed through the use of a framework to help to order and classify its main approaches related to movement modeling. Then the use of Petri nets as a modeling and simulation tool to obtain some kind of foresight of a developed animation is discussed.

This paper describes a method to correct lens distortion for digital cameras. A simple but effective distortion model using local spatial transformation will be used. In addition, the effect of effective focal length on the distortion model will be considered, and we will discuss how to introduce this factor to enhance the model. Finally we have some theoretical analysis and experiments demonstrating that the correction improves the accuracy of image stitching.

The paper introduces a new approach to simulate physical systems by asynchronous numerical integration: different bodies are moved with different stepsizes, but the whole system evolves within a single time frame. The approach ensures that interacting bodies are synchronized, but independent bodies are allowed to move independently. Particle system simulations show significant gain in performance when compared to the conventional, synchronous approach.

This paper summarizes work done in our laboratory with a special emphasis on functional aspects of the visual field. The quality of the perceived image within a visual display depends on the information available within the display itself but also on the capacity of the human visual system to process visual information. Specifically, the paper discusses work on human visual processing which deals with our capacity to process flicker information and how this is affected by aging, colour, motion, visual distortions as assessed by curvature and symmetry.
