This paper summarizes work done in our laboratory with a special emphasis on functional aspects of the visual field. The quality of the perceived image within a visual display depends on the information available within the display itself but also on the capacity of the human visual system to process visual information. Specifically, the paper discusses work on human visual processing which deals with our capacity to process flicker information and how this is affected by aging, colour, motion, visual distortions as assessed by curvature and symmetry.

This paper describes the architecture of an integrated multi-modal sensory (vision.and touch) computational system. We propose to use an approach based on robotics control theory that is motivated by biology and developmental psychology, in order to integrate the haptic and visual information processing. We show some results carried out in simulation and discuss the implementation of this system using a platform consisting on an articulated stereo-head and an arm, which is currently under development.

The use of computer graphics techniques in visualization is hampered by the complexity of data, display limitations and the difficult process of establishing adequate mappings. One way to compensate for the difficulties in handling data and image complexity is to turn to users' capabilities and human factors, and to revisit visualization and interaction techniques under such premises. This paper discusses aspects in the development of a multi-modal visualization system that considers human perception issues in the design of proper data displays. Perceptually driven techniques were implemented as modular extensions to a general-purpose, low cost and open visualization library. Some results are shown and implications discussed.

The paper presents the foundations of IBAL, a general specification for scene animation. IBAL regulates interactions among graphical elements, such as geometric models and behavioral algorithms, to describe animated scenes. Interactions among graphical elements are managed by primitives which are arranged into three graphs. The three graphs logically partition an animation into "who", "what", and "when". IBAL's unique design permits applications to represent, save, and restore a wide variety of complex scenes. A short summary of existing formats for scene modeling and scene animation is presented to distinguish and to assess the utility of IBAL's design.

The paper is devoted to the pattern recognition procedure based on the set of expert rules with unprecisely formulated weights understood as conditional probabilities. Adopting the probabilistic model, the recognition algorithm is derived and evaluation of its probability of misclassification is given. Furthermore, the case with both expert rules and the learning set is considered. The proposed algorithms were empirically tested on the computer generated data and in computer aided diagnosis of acute renal failure and compared with sample based (k-NN) algorithm.

This paper presents an application of the virtual reality paradigm to scientific visualization. We describe how the seismic interpretation task performed in oil and gas companies can be facilitated by using immersion techniques inherent to virtual reality. The feeling of immersion allows an easier and better understanding and manipulation of the three-dimensional data associated with seismic interpretation. Volume rendering is used to provide visual feedback. Acceleration techniques are described to allow the interactivity demanded by virtual environments. Methods for intuitively moving with respect to and interacting with this environment are also presented.

In this paper, we present a short review of shape from stereo reconstruction techniques and propose a stereo matching algorithm based on a pipeline approach. At each stage, current positions of match are estimated from previous computed disparities. Determining the best matching only requires the calculus of correlation values of pixels in a small window centered at candidate positions. The algorithm was succesfully applied to stereo pairs of images, but it can be more advantageously applied to sequences of stereo image frames, due to the Pipeline approach. We also present some visual and numeric results obtained using the algorithm and compare them with those obtained by some usual methods, also implemented.

This paper describes a system architecture that enables the use of different techniques of warping and morphing applied to various classes of graphical objects (images, surfaces, plane curves, volumetric data, implicit surfaces etc.) Combinations of warping and morphing techniques can lead to more powerful and expressive results. The possibility of experimenting with alternative techniques for distinct classes of graphical objects creates a very flexible and robust warping and morphing system.

We describe an interactive video-on-demand (VoD) service, which supports VCR-like functions. It consists of two parts. The first part is a database, which contains the information concerning the videos. This information is published on an Intranet Web. The second part is the actual video distribution using the client server model. The architecture combines network manipulation of high level and a modular system of pluggable components which provides adjustability to the needs of the user.
