The problem of matching two images can be posed as finding a displacement field which assigns each point of the reference image to a point in the test image. In this paper we present an iterative algorithm to estimate the probability density function relating the intensity distribution of two MR scanners, based on the topological constraints embedded in the elastic matching model. The set of images used as input for the algorithm is the Harvard Atlas. The density estimation resulting from this method is compared with two other algorithms which do not assume any prior information about the media being imaged. The results show that the density estimation obtained with the elastic matching approach produce more realistic deformed images and is suitable to represent MR sensor models.

We present an algorithm for intersecting finite-element meshes defined on parametric surface patches. The intersection curves are modeled precisely and both meshes are adjusted to the newly formed borders. The algorithm is part of an interactive shell modeling program, which has been used in the design of large offshore oil structures. We avoid unacceptable interaction delays by using a variant of the DCEL data structure that stores topological entities in spatial indexing trees instead of linked lists. These trees speed up the intersection computations required to determine points of the trimming curves, and also allows mesh reconstruction using only local queries.

This paper reports the development of a versatile framework allowing the characterization and analysis of computer vision.techniques as well as their applications to biological shapes, with attention focused on neural cells. The proposed framework has been implemented within the /spl Sigma/ynergos system, a powerful imaging laboratory that includes, among other features, tools for performance assessment of computer vision.techniques, image databases, real-time processing by using distributed systems and interface with the Internet. The motivations for the development of such a framework: (i) the importance of biological shape analysis; (ii) its potential as an effective tool for the systematic assessment of image processing and analysis techniques; and (iii) the possibility of conducting extensive characterizations of biological shapes. The paper describes an experiment to assess multiscale shape features for complexity characterization, which have been adopted for the classification of two types of ganglion neural cells (cat), namely /spl alpha/ and /spl beta/. This experiment involves: (1) a training stage where the k-means clustering algorithm learns the prototypes of each class from the database; (2) the neurons in the database are classified; (3) the classification results are compared to the original classes; and (4) the number of misclassifications is determined. The genetic algorithm is used as a means of effectively investigating the N-dimensional spaces defined by the parameter configurations.

In this work we study algorithms for obtaining simplified representations of terrain models. Terrain data is difficult to deal with, due to its complexity and size. Simplification methods are some of the techniques used to reduce its natural complexity. Among these methods, greedy insertion with vertical local error measure is considered to be the one that yields best results. In spite of its qualities, the method presents shortcomings, especially when applied to terrain with different height variation regions. We investigate the existence of better error measures to deal with this situation and propose the adoption of greedy insertion methods in which the local vertical error is modified according to the variability of the surface in a neighborhood of the point under consideration. The proposed error measure used with the greedy algorithms yields a significant improvement in the visualization process.

A novel disparity estimation method is presented that increases the robustness of the estimator by replacing the classical approach of dynamic programming with finding the maximum flow in a graph. Once solved, the minimum cut associated to the maximum flow yields a disparity surface for the whole image at once. The results show improved depth estimations as well as better handling of depth discontinuities. Although the running time for solving the maximum flow problem is higher than dynamic programming, experiments have shown that the special topology of the graph, the position of the source and sink and the capacity structure of the edges tend to make the problem easier to solve. However, the main drawback of this approach is the large amount of memory resources required by the classical implementations of the maximum flow algorithm, which make impossible in practice to apply this approach even for the small stereo images with small disparity resolution. Taking advantage of the special topology of the graph and the position of the source and sink we propose an efficient data structure for drastically reducing the amount of memory resources used.

This paper describes a novel method for recovering the perspective geometry of textured surfaces from local spectral analysis. We recover 3-D orientation of planar surfaces based on angular properties of the local spectral description of the surface markings. We also show a geometrical relationship between local spectral components and the vanishing point of the texture plane. Our method is a two-step process. We commence by identifying contours which connect the local spectral moments of equal power. The direction can be estimated from the energy gradient described in the perpendicular direction to these contours. The second step is to correlate points with the same angular spectral distribution. Points with the same angular spectral configuration will lie on a line pointing to a vanishing point. This allows us to estimate the direction of the vanishing point at different positions on the image plane. In this way we can use a sample of spectral moments to estimate the vanishing point location.

We briefly describe advancements in two broad areas of morphological image analysis. Part I deals with differential morphology and curve evolution. The partial differential equations (PDEs) that model basic morphological operations are first presented. The resulting dilation PDE, numerically implemented by curve evolution algorithms, improves the accuracy of morphological multiscale analysis by Euclidean disks and (its anisotropic/heterogeneous version) is the basic ingredient of PDE models that solve image analysis problems such as gridless halftoning and watershed segmentation based on the eikonal PDE. Part II deals with morphology-related systems for pattern recognition. It presents a general class of multilayer feedforward neural networks where the combination of inputs in every node is formed by hybrid linear and nonlinear (of the morphological/rank type) operations. For its design a methodology is formulated using ideas from the backpropagation algorithm and robust techniques are developed to circumvent the non-differentiability of rank functions. Experimental results in handwritten character recognition are described and illustrate some of the properties of this new type of neural nets.

This paper presents a system for automatic extraction of the user-entered data from Brazilian bankchecks. We have assumed that the layout structure of bankchecks is standardized, that any bankcheck can be identified through the MICR line and that a sample of the background pattern is available for every bankcheck. Based on these assumptions, a template is designed for extracting the user-entered items of any bankcheck, no matter which financial institution has issued it. First, the bankcheck is digitized through a scanner and its skew angle is computed by an algorithm based on the Hough transform. Next a template is generated and used for extracting the user-entered data. The extracted data still shows the presence of the background pattern, character strings, and vertical and horizontal lines. The background pattern is eliminated by a morphological subtraction operation while the baselines are erased using an algorithm based on the projection profiles. The printed character strings are eliminated through a morphological subtraction between the image covered by the signature area and a sample of the character strings generated by the system. Finally, a post-processing algorithm is used for recovering some erased pixels. Experimental results show that this approach is robust and efficient for automatic extracting the user-entered items from Brazilian bankchecks achieving a moderate processing time, very good image quality and excellent accuracy rates.

In the advent of the ubiquity of distributed computing with multimedia capabilities, it is very natural to contemplate collaborations that were not previously possible. In the past scientists, doctors, educators, engineers always had need to share, exchange, debate their work, designs, methodology, knowledge and experience. This was commonly done by attending meetings, publishing in common journals, sometimes books, and visiting each other's laboratories, research institutions, or attending lectures at universities. Recently, advances in computer vision. computer graphics and networking, make possible a new way of communication by immersing participants at remote sites into a common 3D virtual world. The 3D virtual world is high quality, realistic, dynamically updated representation which joins the models of the real worlds at each of the remote sites. This virtual world provides means for telecollaboration, it makes the real-time 3D interaction of people at remote locations possible. We describe the new "teleimmersion" technology. We concentrate on the current state of our research related to the problem of accurate, precise, real-time recovery of the individual remote 3D models, their merging into a common virtual world, and the real-time rendering of this world.

Retrieving huge collections of images from the World Wide Web (WWW) based on image content is a challenging field which is receiving a lot of attention from researchers. Most investigations focus on feature extraction and feature matching motivated by image processing and computer vision. We propose a distributed content-based image query system (DCBIQ) based on the WWW. The system architecture integrating knowledge from image processing, semantic descriptors, multi-agents, and WWW navigation is proposed. By extracting the texture, colour, shape features and spatial relationships of the image, we use semantic descriptor models, along with constraints, to query desired images distributed on the WWW. An initial prototype based on NT and extended SQL server has been implemented.
