Data exchange in information systems that span multiple policy domains typically rely on network middleware that can abstract the management of underlying heterogeneous communication protocols. this also involves issues in managing interoperability, scalability, and privacy that arise in the movement of data from one domain to another information domain. the Data Fabric is an emerging approach to systematically build and design such middleware systems to support multi-domain exchange at scale. In this paper, we discuss and compare two key data-centric approaches: 1) application layer topic-based messaging and name-based networking in a multi-cloud environment. We implement and deploy these two approaches (using Kafka and NDN) and we compare the performance in terms of object transfer latency and CPU and memory utilization. We find that NDN networking has superior latency performance and lower resource usage. We believe that this advantage derives from the fact that named-based messaging operates at the network level, while topic-based messaging operates at the application level.

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are omnipresent these days and are used in various application fields. In those, several CPS have to cooperate to achieve their goals. thus, cyber-physical networking plays an important role. the applications of CPSs may use different programming abstractions for the interaction. Also CPSs are used in changing environments and are consequently afflicted with dynamic non-functional requirements. therefore, an adaptive communication with an end-to-end view of the system is important. the goal of our research is a middleware designed to the needs of cyber-physical networking which eases the development, test and maintenance of CPSs.

IoT applications with massive generation of data have different service requirements in terms of performance, security, privacy, availability and price. Relying on a single cloud storage puts limits on the applications, which could be alleviated by another storage solution. Moreover multi-cloud storage architecture has limited impact due to the lack of differentiation between competing cloud solutions. Recently, decentralized storage solutions are gaining attraction as an alternative to cloud storage. In this work, we propose a blockchain-based adaptive middleware for intelligent selection of storage technology for IoT applications and explore the open questions regarding the integration of middleware with IoT applications, storage technologies and blockchain network.

Real-time event identification is critical in complex distributed infrastructures, e.g., water systems, where failures are difficult to isolate. We present AquaEIS, an event -based middle ware tailored to the problem of locating sources of failure (e.g., contamination) in community water infrastructures. the inherent complexity of underground hydraulic systems combined with aging infrastructure presents unique challenges. AquaEIS combines online learning techniques, model driven simulators and data from limited sensing networks to intelligently guide human participants (e.g., staff) in identifying contaminant sources. the framework integrates the necessary abstractions with event processing methods into a workflow that iteratively selects and refines the set of potential failure points for human -driven grab sampling. the integrated platform utilizes Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based representations along with field reports for event inference;reinforcement learning (RL) methods have also shown promise for further refining event locations and reducing the cost of human engagement. Our approach is evaluated in real-world water systems under a range of distinct events. the results show that AquaEIS can significantly reduce the number of sampling cycles, while ensuring localization accuracy (detected 100% of the failure events as compared to a baseline that can only identify 38% of the events).

Production networks are transitioning from the use of physical middleboxes to virtual network functions (VNFs), which makes it easy to construct highly-customized service chains of VNFs dynamically using software. Wide-area service chains are increasingly important given the emergence of heterogeneous execution platforms consisting of customer premise equipment (CPE), small edge cloud sites, and large centralized cloud data centers, since only part of the service chain can be deployed at the CPE and even the closest edge site may not always be able to process all the customers' traffic. Switchboard is a middleware for realizing and managing such an ecosystem of diverse VNFs and cloud platforms. It exploits principles from service-oriented architectures to treat VNFs as independent services, and provides a traffic routing platform shared by all VNFs. Moreover, Switchboard's global controller optimizes wide-area routes based on a holistic view of customer traffic as well as the resources available at VNFs and the underlying network. Switchboard globally optimized routes achieve up to 57% higher throughput and 49% lower latency than a distributed load balancing approach in a wide-area testbed. Its routing platform supports line-rate traffic with millions of concurrent flows.

Business application owners want to outsource data storage, including sensitive data, to the public cloud for economical reasons. this is often challenging since these businesses are and remain responsible for regulatory compliance and data protection, even though cloud providers may do their best to offer (data) protection. Meanwhile, data protection techniques evolve and get better because of continuous research and improvement of advanced encryption. Numerous cryptographic tactics have been proposed, e.g., searchable symmetric encryption (SSE) and homomorphic encryption (HE), that support search and aggregation functions on encrypted data. Each of these tactics has a trade-off between security, performance and functionality, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. For the application developer, the underpinning concepts of these tactics are complex to comprehend, complex to integrate in a distributed application, and prone to implementation mistakes. In this paper we present DataBlinder, a distributed data access middleware that provides crypto agility by means of configurable fine-grained data protection at the application level. DataBlinder supports adaptive runtime selection of data protection tactics, and offers a plugin architecture for such tactics based on a key abstraction model for protection level, performance and supported query functionality. We have developed this middleware in close collaboration with businesses that face these challenges and offer cloud-based applications in e-finance, and e-health, by implementing and integrating state-of-the-art cryptographic schemes to DataBlinder. this paper illustrates the case of medical data protection with FHIR-compliant [30] medical data.

this poster presents our prototype implementation of FireDeX [1], a cross-layer middleware that supports timely delivery of missioncritical messages (i.e. events) over an IoT data exchange service. Emergency scenarios may challenge/congest the network infrastructure. FireDeX addresses these situations by prioritizing event delivery and by dropping some low priority events.

In this demo the use of web-based technologies for device state processing in IoT systems is presented. In particular, the Document Object Model (DOM) is used in conjunction with JavaScript processing to access and modify the state of heterogeneous devices within an IoT middleware platform. Using web-based technologies, the same principles as in client side web development can be applied to implement desired actions on devices. A plugin mechanism is provided, which allows the modification of device state processing scripts during run-time of the middleware platform. the major advantage of using web technologies is that the use cases on the middleware platform can be easily implemented by developers with knowledge in the field of web development. To improve development efficiency, well-known JavaScript libraries like jQuery can be used as well.
