Much research has highlighted the impressive capabilities of large language models (LLMs), like GPT and Bard, for solving introductory programming exercises. Recent work has shown that LLMs can effectively solve a range of more complex object-oriented programming (OOP) exercises with text-based specifications. this raises concerns about academic integrity, as students might use these models to complete assignments unethically, neglecting the development of important skills such as program design, problem-solving, and computational thinking. To address this, we propose an innovative approach to formulating OOP tasks using diagrams and videos, as a way to foster problem-solving and deter students from a "copy-and-prompt" approach in OOP courses. We introduce a novel notation system for specifying OOP assignments, encompassing structural and behavioral requirements, and assess its use in a classroom setting over a semester. Student perceptions of this approach are explored through a survey (n = 56). Generally, students responded positively to diagrams and videos, with video-based projects being better received than diagram-based exercises. this notation appears to have several benefits, with students investing more effort in understanding the diagrams and feeling more motivated to engage with the video-based projects. Furthermore, students reported being less inclined to rely on LLM-based code generation tools for these diagram and video-based exercises. Experiments with the vision-based capabilities of GPT-4 and Bard revealed that they currently fall short in generating accurate code solutions from these visual specifications.

In this paper, an interactive approach to obtain semantic annotations for images is presented. the proposed approach aims at what millions of single, online and cooperative garners are keen to do, enjoy themselves in a competitive environment. It focuses on computer gaming and the use of humans in a widely distributed fashion. this approach deviates from the conventional "content-based image retrieval (CBIR)" paradigm favoured by the research community to tackle the problems related to the semantic annotation and tagging of multimedia contents. the proposed approach uses a multifaceted mathematical model based on game theories to aggregate numbers of different key-paradigms, such as Image Processing, Machine Learning and Game based approaches to generate accurate annotations. As a consequence, this approach is capable of identifying less-rational (cheating oriented) players, thus eliminating them from generating incorrect annotations. the performance of the proposed framework is tested with a number of game players. Result shows that this approach is capable of obtaining correct annotations in practice.

Java 1.5 generics enable the creation of reusable container classes with compiler-enforced type-safe usage. this eliminates the need for potentially unsafe down-casts when retrieving elements from containers. We present a refactoring that replaces raw references to generic library classes with parameterized references. the refactoring infers actual type parameters for allocation sites and declarations using an existing framework of type constraints, and removes casts that have been rendered redundant. the refactoring was implemented in Eclipse, a popular open-source development environment for Java, and laid the grounds for a similar refactoring in the forthcoming Eclipse 3.1 release. We evaluated our work by refactoring several Java programs that use the standard collections framework to use Java 1.5's generic version instead. In these benchmarks, on average, 48.6% of the casts are removed, and 91.2% of the compiler warnings related to the use of raw types are eliminated. Our approach distinguishes itself from the state-of-the-art [8] by being more scalable, by its ability to accommodate user-defined subtypes of generic library classes, and by being incorporated in a popular integrated development environment.

this report summarises the results of the eighth workshop in a series of workshops on pedagogies and tools for the teaching and learning of object-oriented concepts. the submissions to this year's workshop mainly covered curriculum issues, tool support for teaching, and case studies. Several contributions dealt with teaching object-orientation to non-Majors (junior high-school students, non-Science students). this aspect permeated most of the discussions at the workshop and is also reflected in the conclusions. the workshop gathered 19 participants from nine different countries.

the 19th Annual Meeting of the european conference on object-oriented programming—ECOOP 2005—took place during the last week of July in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. this volume includes the refereed technical papers p- sented at the conference, and two invited papers. It is traditional to preface a volume of proceedings such as this with a note that emphasizes the importance of the conference in its respective ?eld. Although such self-evaluations should always be taken with a large grain of salt, ECOOP is undisputedly the pre- inent conference on object-orientation outside of the United States. In its turn, object-orientationis today’s principaltechnology not only for programming,but also for design, analysisand speci?cation of softwaresystems. As a consequence, ECOOP has expanded far beyond its roots in programming to encompass all of these areas of research—whichis why ECOOP has remained such an interesting conference. But ECOOP is more than an interesting conference. It is the nucleus of a technical and academic community, a community whose goals are the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. Chance meetings at ECOOP have helped to spawn collaborations that span the boundaries of our many subdisciplines, bring together researchers and practitioners, cross cultures, and reach from one side of the world to the other. the ubiquity of fast electronic communication has made maintaining these collaborations easier than we would have believed possible only a dozen years ago. But the role of conferences like ECOOP in establishing collaborations has not diminished.

We discuss the design and implementation of StarRate, a modern-Fortran program for the calculation of chemical kinetics coupled to anharmonic vibrational perturbative treatments. the program is written in the F language, a carefully crafted subset of Fortran 95, and is conceived in an object-based programming paradigm, i.e. the set of object-oriented programming features supported by Fortran 90/95. StarRate is made up of three main modules handling the involved molecular species, the elementary reaction steps, and the whole reaction scheme. Input data are accessed through an XML interface based on a cross-code hierarchical data format granting interoperability with popular electronic-structure packages and with the graphical interface of the Virtual Multifrequency Spectrometer developed in our group. Data parsing is performed through versatile Python scripts. Test calculations on the isomerization reaction of C-cyanomethanimine using anharmonic densities of states obtained with a development version of Gaussian are reported together with an account of ongoing developments.

In this paper we present the consequences of unifying the representation of the schema and the instance levels of an object programming language to the formal representation of object model. the uniform representation of schema and instance levels of object languages is achieved, as in the frame-based knowledge representation languages [9], by representing them using a uniform set of modeling constructs. We show that, using such an approach, the structural part of the object language model can be described in a clear manner providing the simple means for the description of the main constructs of the structural model and the relationships among them. Further, we study the consequences of releasing the boundary between the schema and the instance levels of an object programming language by allowing the definition of objects which include data from both levels. We show that few changes are needed in order to augment the previously presented formal definition of the structural part of object language to represent the extended object model.

object-oriented programming, functional programming, and metaprogramming each offer a unique axis of abstraction that enables modular code. Macros, a common technique for metaprogramming, capture ASTs as quotes to let users manipulate them in the host language. However, macros are often at odds with other programming techniques since they can only process code written at the call-site and cannot analyze code behind abstraction boundaries such as variables and methods. Furthermore, the quotes generated for macro expansion exist only at compile-time and cannot be passed around in user code. Multi-stage programming treats quotes as runtime values to address this problem, but introduces the cost of running the compiler when splicing quotes. this forces developers to choose between low runtime overhead and modularity. What if we could have the best of both worlds? We introduce fluid quotes, a new technique that uses dependent types to let users pass quotes through abstraction boundaries in runtime code while splicing them ahead-of-time. this technique enables new metaprogramming capabilities by eliminating the traditional requirement of co-locating parameter expressions with call-sites. Fluid quotes capture not only source code but also associated runtime context to ensure correctness. In addition, they can be composed into larger expressions without any macro code. We demonstrate the capabilities of fluid quotes through two specific applications: optimizing data processing pipelines and making language integrated queries more flexible.
