Hard-wired control systems are increasingly replaced by program-controlled embedded systems. the programming languages currently employed for their implementation lack constructs and design patterns enforcing intelligible code fostering its verification by certification authorities. Recommendations for such constructs necessary to guarantee safety integrity are given in the international standard IEC 61508-3. One of the recommendations refers to object-oriented programming (OOP). therefore, we analyse both basic and advanced properties of OOP like encapsulation, polymorphism, inheritance, prototyping, delegation etc. with respect to functional safety. In a resulting programming language based on PEARL90 [1] we demonstrate coding with examples from hard real-time systems.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) promises improved modularity in software design. However, it also presents novel mechanisms and departs from traditional design theory, leaving researchers in need of a theory and developers in need of guidance as to its appropriate use. this paper rests on the idea that the nature and expressive power of AOP lie largely in programming-language-provided implicit invocation (II) mechanisms, with join points as events, pointcuts as event patterns, advice as methods invoked by events, and aspects as classes that also create eventmethod bindings. the contribution of this paper is the idea that exposing the II roots of AOP can expedite development of a theory and practice of AOP. We present a formal reduction from AOP to II, then, as a data point, we show that model checking techniques previously developed for II systems can be used to check formal properties of AOP systems automatically.

this paper presents the first implementation of COMMA, a new solver independent language for modeling constraint- based problems. the combination of a constraint language with an object-oriented framework represents the base of the core of COMMA. Extension capabilities have also been included with the aim of tackling a wide range of applications from combinatorial to continuous problems. A COMMA compiler has been implemented through a three layered architecture including a dynamic parsing system for handling efficiently the mapping process. In particular, COMMA models can be translated to different solvers, currently to ECLiPSe and Gecode/J.

During architectural risk analysis, security experts look for architectural flaws based on a documented runtime structure, which for object-oriented systems can be approximated by an object graph. Architectural risk analysis involves thinking about worst-case scenarios, and thus requires a sound object graph, which shows all possible objects and dataflow communication between them. Extracting a sound object graph that conveys architectural abstraction is challenging. One solution is to apply a hierarchy to the object graph to convey both high-level understanding and detail. Achieving soundness requires a static analysis, but architectural hierarchy is not available in general purpose programming languages. To achieve hierarchy, we annotate the program with ownership types and use abstract interpretation to extract a global, sound, hierarchical object graph that has dataflow communication edges showing the flow of objects due to field reads, field writes, and method invocations. We formalize the static analysis, prove its soundness, then show that the extracted edges are similar to those drawn by a security expert.

We identify three design principles for reflection and metaprogramming facilities in object oriented programming languages. Encapsulation: meta-level facilities must encapsulate their implementation. Stratification: meta-level facilities must be separated from base-level functionality. Ontological correspondence: the ontology of meta-level facilities should correspond to the ontology of the language they manipulate. Traditional/mainstream reflective architectures do not follow these precepts. In contrast, reflective APIs built around the concept of mirrors are characterized by adherence to these three principles. Consequently, mirror-based architectures have significant advantages with respect to distribution, deployment and general purpose metaprogramming.

As part of software maintenance, having systems in well modular way brings in lot of advantages. In this regard, measuring quality of modularization of a given system becomes very important. In literature today, there are metrics measuring software modularization quality from object oriented and imperative programming styles, but the literature does not have much work on a functional programming perspective. We propose a set of metrics particularly designed for the Scala programming language. In this process we review the guiding principles for proper software modularization applied to concepts like functional purity, first order functions and multiple inheritance, which are present in many modern programming languages. We test our set of metrics on a set of open source software.

Many existing software applications involve complex application layer implemented in 00 programming languages and at the same time use relational database systems as back-end data store. Modeling the whole system in a consistent manner will help developers and end users better understand the application. Application layer and database layer sometimes are tightly coupled together in some legacy systems; however, most people use UML and ER modeling to model these two layers respectively, which creates lots of inconsistencies. Database operations can 7 be properly modeled using ER modeling. In this work we present an extension to UML data modeling profile and use concrete examples to illustrate how to model relational database operations using UML. Atomic database operations are modeled based on our framework and are used as building blocks to model more complex database operations.

Software engineering has always had software reuse as one of its key tenets. In both service-oriented and resource-oriented architectures visibility is a prerequisite for fulfilling their respective promises, namely easier reuse of services and resources. Resource registries are a way to achieve such visibility. We argue that resource registries must separate technical, semantic and organizational aspects and leverage popular existing standards. this way they are able to adapt to domain specific requirements and a multitude of categorizations of and associations between resources. these arguments are backed up by examples primarily from the nascent pan-european eGovernment resource network.

Encapsulation in object-oriented languages has traditionally been based on static type systems. As a consequence, dynamically-typed languages have only limited support for encapsulation. this is surprising, considering that encapsulation is one of the most fundamental and important concepts behind object-oriented programming and that it is essential for writing programs that are maintainable and reliable, and that remain robust as they *** this paper we describe the problems that are caused by insufficient encapsulation mechanisms and then present object-oriented encapsulation, a simple and uniform approach that solves these problems by bringing state of the art encapsulation features to dynamically typed languages. We provide a detailed discussion of our design rationales and compare them and their consequences to the encapsulation approaches used for statically typed languages. We also describe an implementation of object-oriented encapsulation in Smalltalk. Benchmarks of this implementation show that extensive use of object-oriented encapsulation results in a slowdown of less than 15 percent.
