the provision of embedding neural networks into software applications can enable variety of artificial intelligence systems for individual users as well as organizations. Previously, software implementation of neural networks remained limited to only simulations or application specific solutions. Tightly coupled solutions end up in monolithic systems and non reusable programming efforts. We adapt component based software engineering approach to effortlessly integrate neural network models into AI systems in an application independent way. As proof of concept, this paper presents componentization of three famous neural network models i) multi layer perceptron ii) learning vector quantization and iii) adaptive resonance theory family of networks.

this work proposes a new technique for automated support of selection and customization of application frameworks, by using labeled transition systems (LTSs) together with metrics technique. We model the behavior of the frameworks and the system behavior specified in the requirements specification by using two LTSs respectively. We attach some measures to the LTS of the framework, such as the number of the hot spots to be filled. these measures are used to estimate developer's efforts in filling the hot spots for each implementation. the result of estimating the efforts guides the developers to select the implementation, and the structure of the application-specific codes to be filled in can be automatically generated from the selected implementation. Furthermore, we discuss case studies in the area of Web application, where Struts and Turbine can be used.

the distributed development of software is increasingly widespread, driven by the globalization of companies and business and enabled by the improvements in communication and computing (Grinter et al., 1999). the distributed development of software introduces new aspects of cooperative work in which a greater emphasis is placed upon technological support of the software development process. Software development activities deal with the complexity by constructing and validating models of the application domain. Models are important artifacts used for communication within the organizations, developers and stakeholders as well. Constructing correct, complete, consistent, and unambiguous models is a tough task that needs concurrent participation of multiple users possibly geographically dispersed. Distribution of software development through meetings is harder to control. Distributed meetings play typically a critical role in teamwork. During which large amount of implicit knowledge is exchanged through negotiation and conflicts resolution. Hence, efforts in supporting distributed development should focus on better supporting distributed meetings (Boulila, 2003)). this research focuses on the specific problem of distributed brainstorming and the construction of UML models of software through successive distributed teamwork meetings. In Particular we investigate the issues we considered in designing a unified framework based on CSCW concepts and software engineering to support concurrent object-oriented software analysis and design phases. We present an activity-based model and a prototype called GroupUML based on the framework

Model-driven development, using UML, has become the most dominant development paradigm, in software industry. To be correctly and efficiently applied, systematic teaching and learning are key prerequisites for benefiting from new technologies. this is especially true for an industrial setting since traditional classroom training approaches are often not applicable due to time and cost reasons, which, in turn, led to the development of e-learning and blended learning approaches. Based on numerous applications of our modular blended learning approach for teaching object-oriented software development with UML (Bunse at al., 2005) an attempt has been made to improve the design, the organization and the execution of the blended learning arrangement. therefore, we collected data on the learning environment, the learners' behavior and preferences. the results from the questioning in an industrial setting, although far from being representative because of the small number of respondents, give some interesting insights in the needs and expectations of learners and the usage of different elements of blended learning arrangements which could serve as hypotheses for later in depth studies. One of these hypotheses is, that coaching may serve very well the explored learning needs and preferences and makes training programs effective and sustainable

In this paper, an interactive approach to obtain semantic annotations for images is presented. the proposed approach aims at what millions of single, online and cooperative gamers are keen to do, enjoy themselves in a competitive environment. It focuses on computer gaming and the use of humans in a widely distributed fashion. this approach deviates from the conventional "content-based image retrieval (CBIR)" paradigm favoured by the research community to tackle the problems related to the semantic annotation and tagging of multimedia contents. the proposed approach uses a multifaceted mathematical model based on game theories to aggregate numbers of different key-paradigms, such as Image Processing, Machine Learning and Game based approaches to generate accurate annotations. As a consequence, this approach is capable of identifying less-rational (cheating oriented) players, thus eliminating them from generating incorrect annotations. the performance of the proposed framework is tested with a number of game players. Result shows that this approach is capable of obtaining correct annotations in practice.

It has been 30 years since the first publication of TXL, and almost that long since its first public release in the *** newsgroup in 1991. TXL's original purpose was to provide rapid prototyping of new programming languages and dialects by source-to-source syntactic transformation from new language features to old, and the first applications of TXL demonstrated its use in prototyping new features of the Turing programming language such as objects, polymorphism and interval arithmetic. Very rapidly it became apparent that TXL could be used for much more than that, and we quickly began to explore its wider application in software engineering, in particular to design recovery and code generation from models. With the arrival of the Year 2000 challenge in the mid -90s, TXL made its transition to industrial practice, and was used to analyze and reprogram billions of lines of Cobol, RPG and PL/I code at Legasys Corp and IBM Global Services in the years leading up to 2000.

Application programmer's interfaces give access to domain knowledge encapsulated in class libraries without providing the appropriate notation for expressing domain composition. Since object-oriented languages are designed for extensibility and reuse, the language constructs are often sufficient for expressing domain abstractions at the semantic level. However, they do not provide the right abstractions at the syntactic level. In this paper we describe MetaBorg, a method for providing concrete syntax for domain abstractions to application programmers. the method consists of embedding domain-specific languages in a general purpose host language and assimilating the embedded domain code into the surrounding host code. Instead of extending the implementation of the host language, the assimilation phase implements domain abstractions in terms of existing APIs leaving the host language undisturbed. Indeed, MetaBorg can be considered a method for promoting APIs to the language level. the method is supported by proven and available technology, i.e. the syntax definition formalism SDF and the program transformation language and toolset Stratego/XT. We illustrate the method with applications in three domains: code generation, XML generation, and user-interface construction.

Our research complements the current research on automated specification-based testing by proposing a scheme that combines the setup process, test execution, and test validation into a single test program for testing the behavior of object-oriented classes. the test program can be generated automatically given the desired test cases and closed algebraic specifications of the classes. the core of the test program generator is a partial-order planner which plans the sequence of instructions required in the test program. A first cut implementation of the planner has been presented by Leow et al. (2004) based on simple depth-first search. this paper presents a more efficient and effective heuristic search algorithm that performs reachability tests using the Omega calculator. Test results show that heuristic search with reachability tests significantly reduce the search time required to generate a valid sequence of instructions

To describe a picture, spatial relations between image regions provide information concerning relative spatial position of two regions. this information could be for example: one region is left of another region. the definition of such entity is not easy in general and the manner in which spatial data is modeled affects important aspects of its use. So how to model a situation in which both the data and relationships are imprecise? the most useful characteristic of the human language is its ability to describe spatial relations. Giving a defined reference, one can describe an object as left or right of the reference. However, under the same description (left of the reference for example), objects could not have the same position which implies the use of the degree of spatial relations. We describe our methodology using examples introduced in (Gader, 1997; Wang and Keller, 1997). these examples were studied by other authors and were difficult to treat because of the complexity of defining degrees of spatial relations conform with the human perception. We also compare our approach with other approaches and introduce our concept for a GIS technology. Our methodology is particularly suitable for the nature of the geographical information. We present a new approach based on successive cuts of the image horizontally, vertically, or following an oblique direction.

Code instrumentation is widely used for a range of purposes that include profiling, debugging, visualization, logging, and distributed computing. Due to their special status within the language infrastructure, the standard class libraries, also known as system classes provided by most contemporary object-oriented languages are difficult and sometimes impossible to instrument. If instrumented, the use of their rewritten versions within the instrumentation code is usually unavoidable. However, this is equivalent to `instrumenting the instrumentation', and thus may lead to erroneous results. Consequently, most systems avoid rewriting system classes. We present a novel instrumentation strategy that alleviates the above problems by renaming the instrumented classes. the proposed approach does not require any modifications to the language, compiler or runtime. It allows system classes to be instrumented both statically and dynamically. In fact, this is the first technique that enables dynamic instrumentation of Java system classes without modification of any runtime components. We demonstrate our approach by implementing two instrumentation-based systems: a memory profiler and a distributed runtime for Java.
