Reservoir Engineering industry is very interested in using ever growing dataset with more and more complex physics and detailed models. the key issue still remains running simulations in an acceptable CPU time. Regarding the trend in hardware technologies, the challenge is to improve the efficiency of reservoir simulation software on a large number of processors. New numerical difficulties and performance problems appear when the number of cells and the number of processors are growing. In this paper, we present different approaches to overcome these kinds of problems. We discuss technical choices such like advanced scalable linear solver algorithm, load balancing issue with different domain decomposition strategies, dynamic space criteria, mesh partitioner strategy and parallel solver performance management, flexible 10 strategy from simple file system to more complex parallel file system or database. We have developed and benchmarked these different solutions on published reference large scale problems and actual case studies with several tens millions of cells. We analyse the results and discuss the efficiency of each solution to overcome the scalability difficulties and performance limitations due to load unbalance.

Grid computing using idle desktop PCs is popular as a low-cost platform for high-throughput applications. However, they require high-cost data transfer systems from file servers to calculating nodes when very large amounts of data are handled. this high cost derives from inexpensive I/O of worker PCs and small inexpensive file systems of desktop grid computing. this work describes a desktop grid computing system and proposes a resource management system for volume visualization. the resource management system proposed in this work overcomes problems with high-cost data transfer and helps us to use desktop grid computing for data-intensive applications. the resource management system provides efficient scheduling while considering the data file location and consists of three technical parts: resource management, multiple data replication, and worker selection. the proposed system uses these techniques to make an intelligent reuse of data which has been previously copied. this paper evaluates the proposed system compared with a traditional system that does not consider data file location. the proposed resource management System provides efficient scheduling and appears to achieve good performance for data-intensive applications.

Cloud computing builds on the latest achievements of diverse research areas, such as Grid computing, Service-oriented computing, business processes and virtualization. Managing such heterogeneous environments requires sophisticated interoperation of adaptive coordinating components. In this paper we introduce an SLA-aware Service Virtualization architecture that provides non-functional guarantees in the form of Service Level Agreements and consists of a three-layered infrastructure including agreement negotiation, service brokering and on demand deployment. In order to avoid costly SLA violations, flexible and adaptive SLA attainment strategies are used with a failure propagation approach. We demonstrate the advantages of our proposed solution with a biochemical case study in a Cloud simulation environment.

the proliferation of heterogeneous computing systems presents the parallel computing community with the challenge of porting legacy and emerging applications to multiple processors with diverse programming abstractions. OpenCL is a vendor-agnostic and industry-supported programming model that offers code portability on heterogeneous platforms, allowing applications to be developed once and deployed "anywhere." In this paper, we use the OpenCL implementation of the Open-Dwarfs, a benchmark suite that captures patterns of computation and communication common to classes of important applications, as delineated by Berkeley's Dwarfs. We evaluate portability across multicore CPU, GPU, APU (CPUs+GPUs on a die), the Intel Xeon Phi co-processor, and the FPGA. To realize FPGA portability, we exploit SOpenCL (Silicon OpenCL), a CAD tool that automatically converts OpenCL kernels to customizable hardware accelerators. We show that a single, unmodified OpenCL code base, i.e., OpenDwarfs, can be effectively used to target multiple, architecturally diverse platforms.

Sombrero is an object-oriented single address space operating system whose virtual address space can be distributed over multiple nodes. this paper presents recent additions to the design and implementation of the lower level architecture of Sombrero. this design exploits Sombrero's object-oriented development model to provide an implementation of a lower-level architecture for the Alpha platform. Software representations of the hardware system's major components have been implemented. the existing middle level architectural modules now use the lower-level services, these include board and processor level hardware interfaces as well as interrupt processing, device driver and protocol component architectures. We contrast differences in the ways these things are designed and operate in a single address space environment with the way they are done in a conventional multiple address space operating system. Features covered include the use of passive servers, simple efficient thread switching and threads blocking within interrupts. Passive and active device drivers are described and the rational for each mode given. the performance of the Sombrero protocol stack was closely examined with attention to its passive service architecture and thread switching method. the current Sombrero Prototype is described.

Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) is one of the typical NP-hard problems in combinatorial optimization, which is easy to be described but hard to be solved. Its possible amounts of path increase exponentially with the amounts of city. Local search metaheuristics can be used to obtain satisfactory resolution (approximate optimum) in a reasonable time for TSP. However, it is still very CPU time-consuming when solving such a large problem instance. As graphic process units (GPUs) have been evolved to support general purpose computing, they are taken as a major accelerator in scientific and industrial computing. In this paper, we present an optimized parallel heuristic efficiently accelerated on GPUs and the proposed optimization algorithm can provide higher quality solutions within a reasonable computational time for TSP.

With the advent of clustered systems, more and more parallel computing is required. However a lot of programming skills is needed to write a parallel codes, especially when you want to benefit from the various parallel architectural resources, with heterogeneous units and complex memory organizations. We present in this paper a method that generates automatically, step by step, a task-parallel distributed code from a sequential program. It has been implemented in an existing source-to-source compiler PIPS. Our approach provides two main advantages 1) all the program transformations are simple and applied on source code, thus are visible by the user, 2) a proof of correctness of the parallelization process can be made. this ensures that we end up with a correct distributed-task program for distributed-memory machines. To our knowledge, it is the first tool that automatically generates a distributed code for task parallelization. © 2016 IEEE.

We present a new, deadlock-free, routing scheme for toroidal interconnection networks, called OutFlank Routing (OFR). OFR is an adaptive strategy which exploits non-minimal links, both in the source and in the destination nodes. When minimal links are congested, OFR deroutes packets to carefully chosen intermediate destinations, in order to obtain travel paths which are only an additive constant longer than the shortest ones. Since routing performance is very sensitive to changes in the traffic model or in the router parameters, an accurate discrete-event simulator of the toroidal network has been developed to empirically validate OFR, by comparing it against other relevant routing strategies, over a range of typical real-world traffic patterns. On the 16x16x16 (4096 nodes) simulated network OFR exhibits improvements of the maximum sustained throughput between 14% and 114%, with respect to Adaptive Bubble Routing.

As data collection technologies advance, almost every field of scientific research sees an increase in the amount and frequency of data that can be collected. In many cases, the first best method for preprocessing two and three dimensional data sets is to examine them visually, using some sort of plotting software. Although display technology is advancing and monitors are becoming available with increasing resolutions, this increase in available resolution does not necessarily match the rapid increase in data collection. this mismatch leaves researchers with only three choices for visual processing: to view the data in many small chunks, to view only a representative subset of the data, or to create a custom display for viewing much larger data sets at higher resolutions. this paper discusses one method of fullfilling the third option. the process used here is to create a customized display using nine consumer level monitors mounted in a three by three configuration resulting in a display with nine times the resolution of a single monitor. A custom viewing environment is also developed within this project that is designed to lend itself better to the tiled display than would an existing three dimensional data visualization application. the data used for this project consists of a large set of Oceanographic sensor readings taken from several deployments throughout the Gulf of Maine.
