Recently, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are spread all over the world, and are commonly used to collect physical information from the surrounding world. WSNs play a central role in the Internet of things (IoT) vision. IoT is a new paradigm that aims to integrate and connect anything at anytime, anyplace, with anything and by anyone. However, addressing objects is the main challenge for IoT. IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) has been introduced to cope with this issue. the emerging paradigm Social web of thing (SWoT) enables users to manage, access, share, and integrate smart objects with Social Network Site (SNS). this paper investigates different SWoT platforms and architectures, provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art on WSN communication standards.

By sharing resources among peers in peer-to-peer network, application layer multicast (ALM) has been shown an efficient way to improve the scalability and reduce the latency of communication. To deploy ALM in peer-to-peer distributed interactive applications (DIAs), the property of many-to-many communication of DIA demands multiple multicast trees to be constructed in the overlay. therefore, how to efficiently allocate resources among multiple trees to maximize the benefit is an important and challenging issue. In this paper, we study the problem of building ALM trees with minimum total end-to-end delay to receivers in peer-to-peer DIAs with resource constraints on network bandwidth. the end-to-end delay from a sender to receivers in a multicast tree consists of the link delay as well as the packet queuing delay at intermediate peers, while the latter is often ignored or not well studied in the previous work. In this paper, we explicitly establish the relationship between the queuing delay at peers and the topology of multicast trees in peer-to-peer DIAs. Based on the relationship, the above mentioned problem is defined and we prove that it is NP-complete. We present a centralized heuristic algorithm to obtain an approximate solution. Moreover, distributed algorithms are also investigated to refine the topology in practical systems with dynamic changes. Extensive experiments were conducted by simulations to evaluate the proposed algorithms and results are reported in the paper.

parallel tasks, also called malleable tasks, are tasks that can be executed on any number of processors with its execution time being a function of the number of processors alloted to it. the scheduling of independent parallel tasks on homogeneous machines is a problem that has been extensively studied. For heterogeneous machines, with a diverse CPU capacity, new challenges arise, namely the selection of the set of CPUs that optimizes the processing time of a given task. this paper presents a methodology to determine the best allotment for each task that minimizes its processing time on a given heterogeneous machine. the aim is to improve the global processing time of a complex algorithm composed by several linear algebra kernels, by scheduling a number of parallel tasks in the heterogeneous machine. the results presented compare this approach to the simpler data parallel execution of each task on the heterogeneous cluster, i.e. executing one task at a time using the data parallel programming model.

Communications and the scheduling of tasks are the two most important issues of parallel programming on clusters. Over time, various parallel computing programming models such as remote threads, transparent process migration, message passing, distributed shared memory and optimizing parallel compilers have emerged, assisting the programmer to develop applications which can work seamlessly in such environments. Considerable research has been done to optimize these models, which typically have large communications overheads, resulting in a detrimental effect on performance. In addition to this, their acceptance has varied by virtue of the fact that each has introduced new problems with reference to portability, scalability and usability. Sometimes these problems completely violate the underlying notion of such computing. To overcome these issues Pshell, which provides transparent scheduling and communication of jobs between disparate hosts, has been developed. Pshell is the 'glue' for producing high-performance parallel applications that can work securely and efficiently in heterogeneous environments. It represents a major shift in traditional parallel programming environments because it is a language using the syntax of the Bourne shell sh(l). the Bourne shell process and communications models can easily be extended to parallel computing environments using the concurrent programming model. this paper will examine the evolution of cluster computing and identify where deficiencies lie in current programming models, providing a justification for simple languages while providing the reader with an understanding of the Pshell programming environment. In addition to this, the paper illustrates how such a language can be used to ease the process of writing parallel applications and to overcome some of the limitations inherent in traditional programming models without sacrificing performance.

Although some known parameter study tools [1] have successfully been used to solve standard parameter study problems, they are not yet sufficient to handle the current generation of complex parameter investigations. Furthermore, time constraints typically require that multiparametric tasks are executed on a large number of parallel computational resources. Grid computing potentially helps by enabling access to vast computational resources. But in practice the application of multiple Grid resources to complex tasks leads to considerable programming effort for the scientist. One way to reduce both the work and the cost associated with performing parametric investigations of complex scientific experiments could be to automate the creation of complex modules for the computation and the dynamic control of the study, for example through the use of the results from previous computational stages. In this paper we propose a concept for the design and implementation of an automated parametric modeling system for producing complex dynamically-controlled parameter studies without the use of any specific programming language in the process of parameterization, computation and the control of the experiment.

Using distributed computing to harness idle CPU cycles from PCs across the Internet is an economically attractive solution for solving many problems. Research estimates that the average wasted idle time for Internet connected PCs is over 90%. If a fraction of these wasted cycles could be harnessed and presented in a reliable and consistent manner, they could be traded as a commodity. Consumers in this market would expect Service Level Agreements (SLA) with guarantees on Quality of Service. Providers in this market would need to bring consistency and stability to this highly volatile environment. In this paper we explore this topic by presenting SLA contracts for purchasing idle CPU units from a PC Grid, describing the required QoS parameters, and demonstrating how the use of fault-tolerant probabilistic task scheduling with statistical inference could be used to bring stability and consistency to an Internet PC Grid.

We introduce an online scheduling algorithm to optimally assign a set of arriving heterogeneous tasks to heterogeneous speed-scalable processors. the goal of our algorithm is to minimize the total cost of response time and energy consumption (TCRTEC) of the tasks. We have three contributions that constitute the algorithm. First, we propose a novel task dispatching strategy for assigning the tasks to the processors. Second, we propose a novel preemptive service discipline called Smallest remaining Computation Volume Per unit Price of response Time (SCVPPT) to schedule the tasks on the assigned processor. third, we propose a dynamic speed-scaling function that explicitly determines the optimum processing rate of each task. In our work, the processors are heterogeneous in that they may differ in their hardware specifications with respect to maximum processing rate and power functions. Tasks are heterogeneous in terms of computation volume and processing requirements. We also consider that the unit price of response time for each task is heterogeneous. Each task's unit price of response time is allowed to differ because the user may be willing to pay higher/lower unit prices for certain tasks;thereby increasing/decreasing their optimum processing rates. In our SCVPPT discipline, a task's scheduling priority is influenced by its remaining computation volume as well as its unit price of response time. Our simulation results show that SCVPPT outperforms the two known service disciplines, Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT) and the First Come First Serve (FCFS), in terms of minimizing the TCRTEC performance metric. the results also show that the algorithm's dispatcher outperforms the well known Round Robin dispatcher when the processors are heterogeneous. We focus on multi-buffer, single-threading where a set of tasks is allocated to a given processor, but only one task is processed at a time until completion unless preemption is dictated by the service discipline.

this work investigates the impact of hybrid coherence protocols on non-scientific applications. We use execution-driven simulation of a scalable multiprocessor and compare the results obtained with a hybrid protocol with a well-known invalidate protocol and an update-based protocol. Our results show that for our sample programs a hybrid protocol with high threshold outperforms both the invalidate-based and update-based protocols, regardless of the type of parallelism exhibited by the benchmarks. We conclude that our applications can benefit from a hybrid protocol, and that multiprocessors designed for running these systems efficiently should adopt some form of hybrid protocol.

the stochastic simulation of biological systems is an increasingly popular technique in bioinformatics. It often is an enlightening technique, which may however result in being computational expensive. We discuss the main opportunities to speed it up on multi-core platforms, which pose new challenges for parallelisation techniques. these opportunities are developed in two general families of solutions involving both the single simulation and a bulk of independent simulations (either replicas of derived from parameter sweep). Proposed solutions are tested on the parallelisation of the CWC simulator (Calculus of Wrapped Compartments) that is carried out according to proposed solutions by way of the FastFlow programming framework making possible fast development and efficient execution on multi-cores.

Graph clustering is an important technique to detect community clusters in complex networks. SCAN (Structural Clustering Algorithm for Networks) is a well-studied graph clustering algorithm that has been widely applied over the years. However, the processing time cost of sequential SCAN and its variants cannot be tolerable on large graphs. the existing parallel variants of SCAN are focusing on fully utilizing the computing capacity of multi-core computer architectures and inventing sophisticated optimization techniques on single computing node. As the objects and their relationships in cyberspace are varying over time, the scale of graph data is increasing with high rate. the graph clustering algorithms on single node are facing challenges from limited computing resources, such as computing performance, memory size and storage volume. the distributed processing algorithm is called for processing large graphs. this work presents a distributed structural graph clustering algorithm using Spark. Furthermore, the edge pruning technique and adaptive checking are optimized to improve clustering efficiency. And the label propagation clustering is simplified to reduce the communication cost in the distributed clustering iterations. It also conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets to testify the efficiency and scalability of the distributed algorithm. Experimental results show that efficient clustering performance can be achieved and it scales well under different settings.
