the recent spectacular progress in modern Nan electronic technology enabled implementation of very complex multiprocessor systems on single chips (MPSoCs) and created a big stimulus towards development of MPSoCs for embedded applications. the increasingly complex MPSoCs are required to perform real-time computations to extremely tight schedules and to satisfy high demands regarding adaptability, as well as energy, area and cost efficiency. this results in serious design and development challenges. the opportunities created can effectively be exploited only through use of more adequate system architectures and more integrated system IP modules, supported by new effective design methods and electronic design automation tools. this paper focuses on mastering the automatic architecture synthesis and application mapping for heterogeneous massively-parallel MPSoCs based on customizable application-specific instruction-set processors (ASIPs). It is related to a European project ASAM being currently executed in the framework of the ARTEMIS program. It presents the results of our analysis of the main problems that have to be solved and challenges to be faced in design of such heterogeneous customizable MPSoCs for modern demanding applications.

We propose a framework built around a Java Space to ease the development of bag-of-tasks applications. the framework may optionally and automatically tolerate transient crash failures occurring on any of the distributed elements. It relies on check pointing and underlying middleware mechanisms to do so. To further improve check pointing efficiency, both in size and frequency, the programmer can introduce intermediate user-defined checkpoint data and code within the task processing program. the framework used without fault tolerance accelerates application development, does not introduce runtime overhead and yields to expected speedup. When enabling fault tolerance, our framework allows, despite failures, correct completion of applications with limited runtime and data storage overheads. Experiments run with up to 128 workers study the impact of some user-related and implementation-related on overall performance, and reveal good performances for classical Java Space-based master-worker application profiles.

In this paper, we present visual tool for performance measurement and analysis of MPI parallel programs in cluster environments. Most of tools available today for cluster systems show solely system performance data (e.g., CPU load, memory usage, network bandwidth, machine-room temperature, server average load, among others), being more suitable for system administrators who maintain such system. the visual tool is designed to show performance data of all computer nodes involved in the execution of MPI parallel program, such as CPU load level and memory usage. Additionally, this tool is able to display comparative performance data charts of multiple executions of the application (instrumented with MPI interface) under development.

We study the p-median problem which is one of the classical problems in location theory. For p = 2 and on a two-dimensional mesh, we give an O(m/sup 2/ + q log q)-time approximation algorithm for solving the problem with worst-case ratio 1.5 + /spl delta/ on the communication cost, where m is the number of rows of the mesh containing demand points, n the number of columns containing demand points, m /spl ges/ n,q the number of demand points, and /spl delta/ is some positive constant which can be as small as needed.

An approach to extracting iteration-level parallelism from dataflow programs is presented. the method exploits the single-assignment principle, which guarantees that any data value has exactly one producer. To minimize interprocessor communication, the code is modified so that, at run time, each producer executes on the processor that holds the corresponding data. Overhead resulting from possibly remote read accesses is alleviated by a software technique similar to caching. the performance of this process-oriented dataflow system (PODS) is demonstrated using the hydrodynamics simulation benchmark called SIMPLE, in which a 19-fold speedup on a 32-processor architecture has been achieved.< >

As the computation cost increases to meet the design requirements for computation-intensive applications on today's systems, the pressure to develop high performance parallel processors on a chip will increase. Network-on-Chip (NoC) techniques that interconnect multiple processing elements with routers are the solution for reducing computation time and power consumption by parallel processing on a chip. the shared communication platform is also essential to meet the scalability and complexity challenges for System-on-Chip (SoC). However not many parallel applications have been studied for such an architecture and workload characterizations have not been researched to benefit the architecture design optimization. In this paper, we study multiple data-parallel applications on a multicore NoC architecture with distributed memory space. We introduce an efficient runtime workload distribution algorithm that balances workloads of parallel processors and apply for selected embedded applications. Using our cycle accurate multicore simulator, we simulated our NoC-enabled multicore architecture model and executed data-parallel applications on various number of processing elements using the proposed runtime load balancing algorithm and analyzed performance and communication overheads.

Swarm robotics is a new approach to the coordination of multi robot systems which consist of large numbers of mostly simple physical robots. It is supposed that a desired collective behavior emerges from the interactions between the robots and interactions of robots with the environment. An actual problem in this field is the development of the distributed algorithms for managing this kind of systems. Such kind of algorithms should solve a global problem, which is not available to individual robots, by programming the local behavior of many such robots operating in parallel. In this paper we propose to use stochastic block cellular automata as tool for the development of such distributed algorithms. In such automata every cell in addition to symbolic state has also orientation to one of its nearest neighbors. Updating the state of the automaton is performed by using probabilistic partition of its cells to the character chains, based on the orientation of the cells, and subsequent replacement of these chains according to a predetermined system of rules. A special feature of suggested approach is that it allows to uniformly describe both the algorithmic behavior of the robots themselves and disorderly behavior of the environment. the paper deals with the process of the development of artificial colony of bacteria that perform a collective search for nutrients. Used behavioral model of bacteria is based on the bacterial search algorithm, which is a classic swarm optimization algorithm, well-proven in solving various problems of continuous and discrete optimization. the paper describes the cellular automaton organization of artificial bacteria, suggested implementation of the major mechanisms of bacterial behavior - movement, growth, division and death. In this paper, we present a novel approach to optimally fuse estimates in distributed state estimation for linear and nonlinear systems. An optimal fusion requires the knowledge of the correct correlations between locally obtained estimates. the naive and intractable way of calculating the correct correlations would be to exchange information about every processed measurement between all nodes. Instead, we propose to obtain the correct correlations by keeping and processing a small set of deterministic samples on each node in parallel to the actual local state estimation. Sending these samples in addition to the local state estimate to the fusion center allows for correctly reconstructing the desired correlations between all estimates. In doing so, each node does not need any information about measurements processed on other nodes. We show the optimality of the proposed method by means of tracking an extended object in a multi-camera network.

Inversion of large-scale matrices appears in a few scientific applications like model reduction or optimal control. Matrix inversion requires an important computational effort and, therefore, the application of high performance computing techniques and architectures for matrices with dimension in the order of thousands. Following the recent uprise of graphics processors (GPUs), we present and evaluate high performance codes for matrix inversion, based on Gauss-Jordan elimination with partial pivoting, which off-load the main computational kernels to one or more GPUs while performing fine-grain operations on the general-purpose processor. the target architecture consists of a multi-core processor connected to several GPUs. parallelism is extracted from parallel implementations of BLAS and from the concurrent execution of operations in the available computational units. Numerical experiments on a system with two Intel QuadCore processors and four NVIDIA cl060 GPUs illustrate the efficiency and the scalability of the different implementations, which deliver over 1.2 x 10 12 floating point operations per second.

the low cost and wide availability of PC-based clusters have made them an excellent alternative to access supercomputing. However, while network of workstations may be readily available, there is an increasing need for performance tools that support these platforms, in order to achieve even higher performance. One of possible ways to increase performance is parallel program restructuring. It is introduced in this paper a toolkit to generate graphical charts for visualization of MPI parallel programs, reflecting to its execution over time, with the use of DP*Graph representation, parallel version of timing graph. In other words, parallel programs are shown through charts its sequential codes, dependencies and communication structures in a particular cluster system platform. Still in this paper, it is discussed the implementation of this toolkit and present some experimental results obtained.
