In a wide range of color-related computer vision applications, researchers tried to select one of the conventional color spaces as the optimum one. this paper, however, addresses the problem of how to learn an optimum color space from the given training sample set. We seek a set of optimal coefficients to combine the R, G and B components based on a discriminant criterion and then gain one discriminant color component for representing color image for recognition purposes. Further, we can obtain three sets of optimal combination coefficients and use them to generate a three-dimensional discriminant color space (DCS). the proposed DCS method was assessed on Experiment 4 of the Face Recognition Grand Challenge (FRGC) database and the experimental results show the proposed discriminant color space significantly outperforms the RGB and Ig(r-g) color spaces.

this paper proposes a gain scheduling robust controller whose structure is continuously changed by fuzzy logic such that the controller makes the system respond quickly if the error e is large and vice versa in order to obtain a robust controller which is insensitive to both the plant noise and the observation noise. then, it is applied to speed control for an induction servomotor. Experiments show that the proposed controller is superior to both a sliding mode controller and a PID controller. the paper includes the stability analysis of the overall system and the design procedure using Liapunov's method.< >

Designing reusable software modules can be extremely difficult. the design must be balanced between being general enough to address the needs of a wide range of clients and being focused enough to truly satisfy the requirements of each specific client. One area where it can be particularly difficult to strike this balance is in the implementation strategy of the module. the problem is that general-purpose implementation strategies, tuned for a wide range of clients, aren't necessarily optimal for each specific client-this is especially an issue for modules that are intended to be reusable and yet provide high-performance, An examination of existing software systems shows that an increasingly important technique for handling this problem is to design the module's interface in such a way that the client can assist or participate in the selection of the module's implementation strategy. We call this approach open implementation. When designing the interface to a module that allows its clients some control over its implementation strategy, it is important to retain, as much as possible, the advantages of traditional closed implementation modules. this paper explores issues in the design of interfaces to open implementation modules. We identify key design choices, and present guidelines for deciding which choices are likely to work best in particular situations.

In recent years, phase-change memory (PCM) has drawn a lot of attention because of its byte-addressability and non-volatility. It has become a good alternative storage medium to reduce the performance gap between main memory and secondary storage, but its high energy consumption on writes is a challenging issue in the design of battery-powered mobile computing systems. By utilizing the byte-addressability and the asymmetric read-write energy/latency of PCM, we propose an energy-efficient update scheme with a fifty-percent rule for journaling file systems to reduce the energy consumption. this scheme only writes the modified data, instead of the whole updated block, to PCM-based storage devices with the guarantee of the sanity/integrity of file systems even if the system crashes or power failure occurs during the process of data updates. A series of experiments based on the implementation on the Linux system was conducted to evaluate the capability of the proposed scheme, and the results are very encouraging.

In recent years, virtualization technology enables multiple virtual machines to run on a physical machine, where each virtual machine can run independently and own its operating system. Virtualization technology has been adopted in many IT industries because of its ability to improve hardware resource utilization, achieve low-power consumption, simplify server management, and reduce maintenance cost. However, since the hardware limitation of storage devices, I/O capacity could cause performance bottleneck. In the paper, we will propose a hybrid storage access framework for virtualization environment to dynamically adjust and enhance I/O performance by using solid-state drives (SSDs).

Mobile OSes and applications form a large, complex and vulnerability-prone software stack. In such an environment, security techniques to strongly protect sensitive data in mobile devices are important and challenging. To address such challenges, we introduce the concept of the trusted data vault, a small trusted engine that securely manages the storage and usage of sensitive data in an untrusted mobile device. In this paper, we design and build Droid Vault - the first realization of a trusted data vault on the Android platform. Droid Vault establishes a secure channel between data owners and data users while allowing data owners to enforce strong control over the sensitive data with a minimal trusted computing base (TCB). We prototype Droid Vault via the novel use of hardware security features of ARM processors, i.e., Trust Zone. Our evaluation demonstrates its functionality for processing sensitive data and its practicality for adoption in the real world.

Modern engineering design and simulation software (CAD, CAM, CAE) allow for extensive use of virtual prototypes along the product and production development reducing the cost and time of physical prototyping. these software technologies in turn has also important role in testing and verification against the various regulations. this paper reviews the recent progress of virtual verification (ViVer) technology and the underlying emerging concepts with special focus on the role of certification service providers. the paper covers multiple aspects of the ViVer concept serving as a conceptual guideline for the development of virtual verification systems of the future.

Currently, in countries where the mother tongue is not English language, globalization brings a very important requirement related with level of English since it facilitates communication in any area, be it, business, education, tourism, and so on. People need to have a good mastery of the English language, however, if the mother tongue is different from English, dominating the English language can become a very serious problem. Under these circumstances, in countries where the mother tongue is not English, educational institutions have included meaningful learning of English as a second language in their curriculum for many years. Vocabulary is one of the essential components of any language and it is required get a good level in order to have success in the process of teaching/learning of the English. Spaced repetition has been widely implemented and examined in mobile-assisted vocabulary learning as an important learning strategy. In this context, the purpose of this comparative study was to investigate and compare university students’ perspectives utilizing two mobile apps to improve English vocabulary in the Language Department at University of Cuenca (Ecuador): the first application is Slango and the second was chosen applying multi-criteria decision making of a set of mobile apps with similar features than Slango. therefore, we did a comparative evaluation of the two mobile apps in order to evaluate usability by using SUS questionnaire and desirability by using Microsoft Desirability Test. Results show that Slango has similar features as ReadLang (the second app to compare) when it is used to improve student English vocabulary using YouTube videos. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – science and Technology Publications, Lda.

the paper presents a new, nondestructive method of determination of the air-tightness of metal packagings of transistors. this method is based on the thermoacoustic approach with a microphone detection. thermoacoustic approach means that the sound is generated by the periodical temperature of the element caused by the periodical electric power dissipation in it. In the paper both the experimental thermoacoustic frequency characteristics as also the theoretical approach applied for numerical interpretations of experimental data are presented and discussed.

Short-term load forecasting (STLF) of electricity consumption in university buildings is essential for the efficient management and operation of electricity systems. However, STLF for university buildings is challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining complete data of influencing factors and the weak cyclicality of electricity operation. this paper proposes a novel DA-RNN-MDN model to reach multi-step probabilistic load forecasting of university buildings. Specifically, we take advantage of dual-stage attention-based recurrent neural network (DA-RNN) in adaptively capturing the temporal dependencies of time series data to extract information from historical data. In addition, a hybrid structure of long short-term memory (LSTM) network and mixture density network (MDN) is designed to achieve multi-step probabilistic load forecasting, ensuring the time correlation between multiple results of load prediction. Experimental results indicate that for STLF in a university building, the probability distribution of future multi-step loads can be forecasted with good performance.
