the Internet of Drones (IoD) is an emerging network architecture that leverages bidirectional communications between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and a ground infrastructures. Given its versatility, the IoD is a key enabler for the evolution of sophisticated verticals, thus including Smart Cities, Industry 4.0 and Smart Transportation, to name a few. As a matter of fact, a swarm of drones can carry out real-time data gathering, industrial plants monitoring and wide area surveying. Since drones are battery-supplied systems, energy efficiency, communication reliability, and flight formation management routines become critical aspects of the IoD design. this work discusses the communication facets in a swarm of drones, leveraging the joint adoption of Bluetooth and Millimeter-Wave technologies. the proposal enables the exchange of heterogeneous data with a ground infrastructure while facilitating coordinated flight of the swarm. the resulting dual mode system optimizes energy resources, while maximizing reliability and effectiveness of drones’ communications. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the recent predominance of consumer level 3D printers has brought much attention towards the additive manufacturing process. On November 19th 2013 29 small satellites were launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility including KySat-2, a 1U CubeSat. KySat-2 was built with 10 additively manufactured, also called 3D printed, parts made from Windform XT 2.0, a material whose previous uses were mainly for automotive racing. Another 1U CubeSat, PrintSat, will be launched in 2014 and whose entire structure is built from the same material. this paper will discuss how each satellite used 3D printing, an overview of Windform XT 2.0, pros, cons and design considerations of 3D printing, and its future potential uses in the design and construction of spacecraft.

the machines used in High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments, such as accelerators or tokamaks, are sources of gamma and neutron radiation fields. the radiation has a negative influence on electronics and can lead to the incorrect functioning of complex control and diagnostic system designed for HEP machines. therefore, in most cases the electronic equipments is installed in radiation-safe areas, but in some cases this rule is omitted to decrease costs of the project. the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (E-XFEL), being under construction at DESY research center, is a good example. the E-XFEL uses single tunnel and part of the electronic system will be installed next to main beam pipe and exposed to radiation. the modern Advanced/Micro Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA/μTCA) standards are foreseen as a base for control and diagnostic system for this new project. these flexible standard provides high reliability, availability and usability for the system which can be decreased by negative influence of parasitic radiation field. the additional shielding will be introduced to protect racks with electronics, but during commissioning and, in case of control systems errors, the assumed radiation levels can be exceeded. therefore, it is highly recommended to monitor doses absorbed by electronics. Moreover, it could be helpful for estimating system lifetime, scheduling maintenance periods and protecting machine from unexpended failures. the paper describes a Radiation Monitoring Module (RMM) based on FPGA mezzanine card standard capable of monitoring gamma radiation and neutron fluence in real-time.

Smart home electronic devices invisibly collect, process, and exchange information with each other and with remote services, often without a home occupants' knowledge or consent. these devices may be mobile or fixed and may have wireless or wired network connections. Detecting and identifying all devices present in a home is a necessary first step to control the flow of data, but there exists no universal mechanism to detect and identify all electronic devices in a space. In this paper we present ICED (Identification and Classification of Electronic Devices), a system that can (i) identify devices from a known set of devices, and (ii) detect the presence of previously unseen devices. ICED, based on harmonic radar technology, collects measurements at the first harmonic of the radar's transmit frequency. We find that the harmonic response contains enough information to infer the type of device. It works when the device has no wireless network interface, is powered off, or attempts to evade detection. We evaluate performance on a collection of 17 devices and find that by transmitting a range of frequencies we correctly identify known devices with 97.6% accuracy and identify previously unseen devices as ‘unknown’ with 69.0% balanced accuracy.

In this paper, a new method for detecting multiple structural breaks, i.e. undesired changes of signal behavior, is presented and applied to artificial and real-world data. It will be shown how Chernoff Bounds can be used for high-performance change-point detection after preprocessing arbitrary time series to binary random variables using adequate transformation routines. the algorithm is evaluated on artificial time series and compared to state of the art methods. the developed algorithm is competitive to state of the art methods in terms of classification errors but is considerably faster especially when dealing with long time series. theoretical results on artificial data from part one of this paper are applied to real-world time series from a pharmaceutical wholesaler and show striking improvement in terms of forecast error reduction, thereby greatly improving forecast quality. In order to test the effect of structural break detection on forecast quality, state of the art forecast algorithms are applied to time series with and without previous application of structural break detection methods. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Because of low processing speed of CPU and small memory space, time efficiency of portable hardware, where Mobile GIS is running, is low when processing the mass data. A variety of plans, which can improve the time efficiency of rendering the mass data by application software at user side of Mobile GIS, were studied in terms of development language selection, rendering process control, memory mapping, as well as special processing of different data formats. these technical plans were practiced in case studies based on the system platform of Windows Mobile and the development language of C++. Development strategies we got will improve the time efficiency of mass data rendering by Mobile GIS and make it easy to operate for users.

the FlexRay communication protocol is expected to be the de-facto technique standard for the next generation high-speed networks on vehicles. A number of recent studies has thus investigated message scheduling techniques for FlexRay systems. However, most existing work focused on either the scheduling of periodic messages on the static segment or the scheduling of hard aperiodic messages on the dynamic segment while soft aperiodic messages have been neglected. Also, isolated scheduling severely limits the overall performance of all messages including periodic, hard aperiodic and soft aperiodic messages in terms of bandwidth utilization and transmission latency. In order to address these aspects, this paper presents an algorithm, referred to as Joint Scheduling Algorithm for FlexRay (JSAF), which jointly schedules soft aperiodic messages together with periodic and hard aperiodic messages in real-time FlexRay systems. the algorithm prioritizes periodic messages and hard aperiodic messages and first schedules them onto the static segment and the dynamic segment, respectively. Soft aperiodic messages are then dynamically scheduled with an online scheduler by utilizing unused time left by periodic messages and hard aperiodic messages. Performance evaluation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and competitiveness of our approaches when compared to existing algorithms.

Recent advances in embedded automation applications require quality of results in terms of speed and computational complexity, along with strict time-to-market schedules. To cope with these demands, the design industry is searching for novel approaches. Performance is sought by utilizing modern FPGA devices, offering hundreds of GFLOPs with maximum power efficiency. Productivity is enforced with High-Level Synthesis (HLS) and Electronic System Level (ESL) design methodologies, that offer an efficient abstraction level to boost-up early prototyping. this paper presents a methodology and the required tool flow for the design of a System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture, as a reference for modern control applications. the advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) improved performance through hardware acceleration of demanding application cores, (b) improved quality of results with floating point calculations, (c) flexibility and integration of common peripheral devices supported by a RISC microcontroller and (d) improved designer productivity by avoiding Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) and other time consuming and error introducing procedures and working with C level design descriptions only. Experimental results show that the proposed SoC architecture is an efficient rapid prototyping platform for digital control applications, with very promising future extension capabilities.

In recent years, the scientific community has found increasing interest in technological systems for the evaluation of the mobility performance of the elderly population. the reduced quantity of dataset for gait and balance analysis of elderly people is a serious issue in studying the link between cognitive impairment and motor dysfunction, particularly in people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. In this context, this work aims to provide a dataset with skeletal information of people aged 60 years and older, while they perform well-established tests for stability assessment. 27 healthy people and 20 patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases, housed at two different nursing institutes, have been selected for the stability analysis. Subjects have been observed and evaluated by clinical therapists while executing three motion tests, namely balance, sit-to-stand and walking. the stability postural and gait control of each subject has been analyzed using a video-based system, made of three low-cost cameras, without the need for wearable and invasive sensors. the dataset provided in this work contains the skeletal information and highly-discriminant features of the balance, sit-to-stand and walking tests performed by each subject. To evaluate the efficiency of the balance dataset, the estimated risk of fall of the subjects has been processed considering the extracted features, and compared with the expected one. Final results have proven a good estimation of the risk of fall of the people under analysis, underlining the effectiveness of the dataset. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this paper presents an energy-aware electronic design automation (EDA) methodology for the system-level exploration of hierarchical storage organizations, focusing mainly on data-intensive signal processing applications. Starting from the high-level behavioral specification of a given application, several memory management tasks are addressed in a common algebraic framework, using data-dependence analysis techniques similar to those used in modern compilers. Within this memory management software system, the designer can explore different algorithmic specifications functionally equivalent, by computing their minimum storage requirements. the system can perform an exploration based on energy consumption of signal assignments to the off- and on-chip memory layers, followed by a storage-efficient mapping of signals to the physical memories. the last phase of the methodology is an exploration approach for energy-aware banking of the on-chip memory, which takes into account both the static and dynamic energy consumption.
