Greenhouses are complex systems where many variables are involved in order to optimize crops in an intensive agriculture framework. therefore, monitoring and visualization of all these variables in real-time is mandatory to meet the trade-off between natural resource consumption and production maximization. In this article, we introduce an intelligent warning system to efficiently control agricultural activity in an operational greenhouse to increase productivity by optimizing crop production and energy consumption. the system includes a web application that allows the graphical and statistical representation of data measured by several sensors located inside a greenhouse. these sensors are located in strategic points that allow the reading of real-time data in a more accurate manner, therefore allowing the generation of information with the minimum percentage of error. In addition, the web application offers different data representations to allow a more exhaustive analysis of the data obtained. As a result, this warning system may help greenhouse managers to anticipate abnormal situations affecting their crops.

Cloud computing has been widely adopted by corporate and individual customers due to its resource-sharing model that allows on-demand access to scalable and high performance computing services. the growth of such services means there are a lot of service providers who can provide similar services, and hence quality attributes of the services become the criteria for cloud service selection. this paper focuses on cloud service trustworthiness that embraces both security and dependability attributes. A trustworthiness assessment method is proposed based on the CSA Cloud controls Matrix security guidelines that are mapped to NIST SP800-53 security and privacy recommendations and AICPA trust services principles and criteria in order to classify security and dependability characteristics of each control. Based on the mapping, the provision capabilities of a cloud service as listed in the CSA Consensus Assessments Initiative Questionnaire are assessed and the trustworthiness score of the service is calculated. the assessment method then can assist service consumers in determining and comparing trustworthiness of candidate cloud services as one factor to consider in the service selection process.

In recent years, with increase in the number of vehicles, more and more traffic issues are becoming the focus of attention worldwide. One of the most important problems is traffic congestion. Currently, most traffic systems still use fixed-time setting for a very long cycle. these systems cannot dynamically adjust traffic light timing in response to unexpected situations such as traffic accidents, natural calamities, or sudden incidents. With advances in technology, traffic data such as traffic volume, speed, and waiting time can now be gathered by sensors or cameras. Leveraging on automatic traffic data collection we try to address the traffic congestion issue by proposing a novel Model Predictive control (MPC)-based Traffic Light control System (MTLCS). MTLCS includes a traffic flow prediction model and a traffic timing optimization method. Historical traffic data is used to predict future traffic volumes. An MPC-based traffic light optimization method is proposed to obtain appropriate time settings that can reduce overall congestion. Our method also has the ability to dynamically adjust traffic signal timings. It can rapidly respond to real-time traffic conditions to reduce traffic congestion. Experiments show that the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of our traffic flow prediction model is less than 12%. Using the proposed MPC-based optimization method, the average waiting rate is reduced by 29.70%, when compared with the fixed-time traffic light control system.

this paper presents a combination of existing advanced methods to solve the partial volume segmentation problem. It uses region-based active surface modelling in a hierarchical scheme to eliminate segmentation errors, followed by an alpha matting step to further refine the segmentation. this method can have an interest in several applications in medical imaging. We have validated our method on real PET images of head-and-neck cancer patients as well as custom designed phantom PET images. Experiments show that our method can generate more accurate segmentation than existing approaches.

Vehicles equipped with varying levels of automation and connection are starting to share the road with conventional vehicles. this provides new opportunities to design and test systems to control the acceleration dynamics of those equipped vehicles in mixed traffic environment contexts, with the global aim to globally reduce traffic congestion and increase traffic safety. Recent work has been focusing on proposing solutions to this problem by applying modern control theory, such as optimal control, H_∞ control. However, such approaches tend to be computationally expensive or do not take into account the actuators limitations and the safety constraints. For this reason, as well as for the sake of simplicity, in this paper we investigate the design of classic PID controllers to control the acceleration of vehicles equipped with Automated Driving systems. We consider that each vehicle updates its acceleration according to a car-following model with specific behavioural parameters, thereby accounting for the variability of drivers' behaviours, and we assume that the longitudinal acceleration dynamics of only a proportion of vehicles can be controlled. After linearising the system about its equilibrium state, we show that each vehicle speed to acceleration transfer function reduces to a second order system written as a function of the equilibrium state and the behavioural parameters of the vehicle. We validate this formulation in simulation considering PBRS acceleration inputs. Selecting the set point as the equilibrium speed, an adaptive PID controller is then derived for each vehicle, considering the behavioural parameters. We then discuss set point weighting to avoid propagation of measurement errors, integrator wind-up to consider limitations of the actuators and safety constraints, and tuning of the controllers. Use of feedback linearizing techniques with input/output decoupling has been proposed for the control of induction motors. In the papers reported in the literature only the continuous-time control has been analysed, showing that complete linearization and decoupling can be achieved by a nonlinear state feedback control law. Since the state of the induction motor is not directly accessible (rotor flux is not measurable in a standard machine), an observer must be used in the controller. Due to the nonlinearity of the induction motor model, even if the system is stable using state feedback and the observer itself is stable, the closed loop system may be unstable. However, the stability of the closed loop system can be guaranteed if the observer dynamics are set sufficiently fast. the complexity of the nonlinear control law demands for a digital implementation of the controller. this must be carefully considered; a direct implementation of the continuous-time controller may lead to instability of the closed loop system due to the discretization effects, even if the sampling time is fixed to the smallest value compatible with todays technologies. To overcome this problem, the observer must be designed directly in the discrete-time domain. In the paper, the design procedure is reported and the controller implementation is discussed in detail. Simulation experiments are reported, including analog-to-digital conversions, computational delays and pulse width modulation, showing the validity of the proposed approach.< >

Fault detection is critical for industrial applications to maintain a stable operation and to reduce maintenance costs. Many fault detection techniques have been introduced recently to cope with the increasing demand for more safe operations. One of the most promising fault detection algorithms is the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). UKF is a model-based algorithm that could be used to detect different fault types for a given system. On the other hand, the three-tank system is a well-known benchmark that simulates many industrial applications. the fault detection of the three-tank system is quite challenging as it is a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) nonlinear system. therefore, UKF will be employed as a fault detection strategy for this system to detect sensor and actuator faults. the performance of the UKF will be investigated under different operating and fault conditions to show its merits for the given case study.

the detection of recurrent prostate cancer following external beam radiotherapy relies on persistent increases in serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. However, this biochemical recurrence may take place after an extended period, delaying secondary treatment for patients with relapsing tumours. Recent research has identified situations where anticipating PSA value relapse, often linked with tumour recurrence, is possible using personalized mechanistic models for PSA forecasting. Yet, these models lack insight into false negatives and their susceptibility to relapse. To address this problem, we propose to determine an optimal threshold for detecting PSA outliers. this research analyses patient data, particularly PSA value sequences, to determine whether the mechanistic model’s parameters representing an outlier of the parameter distribution exhibit a correlation with the characteristics of the patient’s relapse. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

this paper considers the problem of controlling the complexity of the state space abstraction of a deterministic switched affine system, which must satisfy a rich specification, expressed as an Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula. We propose a probabilistic approach to the state space abstraction problem that enables a trade-off between complexity and accuracy of the abstraction. Instead of a deterministic finite transition system (DFTS), the state space is abstracted to a Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC) using a regular state space partition. the transition relations between the discrete states and the corresponding probabilities are computed based on the Chebyshev radius of the intersection between one-step reachable sets and discrete states. the resulting abstraction is complete, but not minimal, i.e., it introduces some false transitions. In order to refine the abstraction, Monte Carlo Simulation is used, which yields a confidence measure for every transition, besides the assigned probability. Given the product automaton (PA) between the DTMC and Büchi Automaton (BA) associated with the LTL formula, a (optimal) path generation algorithm and a controller synthesis algorithm complete the proposed solution. the application of the developed methodology to a benchmark case study from the literature, i.e., airplane fuel balancing, demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach.

Communication systems are a key element for the industry 4.0 revolution, where the remote access to the machinery is a fundamental part for the automation of tasks related to monitoring and control of the different industrial processes. there is an increasing interest in performing such communications using a wireless medium, as they offer several advantages as a lower cost, greater flexibility or the ability to operate in moving elements. However, existing works have showed that the achievable performance in the sub-6 GHz frequency bands is insufficient to cope with all the requirements, which motivated the analysis of the millimeter wave spectrum for these use cases. Industrial environments present a harsh condition for electromagnetic wave propagation, where the abundance of reflective surfaces can present difficulties to properly exchange information. thus, a thorough analysis and characterization of the propagation through this kind of environment is necessary to develop protocols and standards accordingly. this work provides the results of measurements carried out in two industrial facilities, which are a university workshop and a pit oven building from a steel company. Metrics of the results are computed and discussed as well, where a significantly larger losses can be seen for the pit oven measurements compared to other industrial scenarios.
