this paper addresses the security allocation problem within networked control systems, which consist of multiple interconnected control systems under the influence of two opposing agents: a defender and a malicious adversary. the adversary aims to maximize the worst-case attack impact on system performance while remaining undetected by launching stealthy data injection attacks on one or several interconnected control systems. Conversely, the defender’s objective is to allocate security resources to detect and mitigate these worst-case attacks. A novel centrality-based approach is proposed to guide the allocation of security resources to the most connected or influential subsystems within the network. the methodology involves comparing the worst-case attack impact for both the optimal and centrality-based security allocation solutions. the results demonstrate that the centrality measure approach enables significantly faster allocation of security resources with acceptable levels of performance loss compared to the optimal solution, making it suitable for large-scale networks. the proposed method is validated through numerical examples using Erdős-Rényi graphs. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Number of engineering systems can be characterized as complex since they have a dynamic and nonlinear behaviour incorporating a stochastic uncertainty. On the other hand, as a machine learning method, Gaussian processes (GP) provide a practical, probabilistic approach to learning in kernel machines. this makes them very suitable for obtaining probabilistic, nonparametric black-box models of stochastic nonlinear dynamic systems. In this paper, a novel study on the modeling and adaptive optimal control of a tubular reactor is made by using Gaussian processes. Such reactor is a typical example of a nonlinear distributed parameters system, whose first-principles dynamic models consists of partial differential equations. the purpose is to obtain a nonlinear autoregressive models with exogenous input (NARX) of the output concentration and temperature of the reactor by applying a GP modeling approach. the identified surrogate models are then used to design an adaptive model predictive controller to achieve optimal performance of the reactor despite of the stochastic changes in the feed temperature. the performance of the adaptive MPC based on GP models is studied by simulation experiments. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Server-based face recognition access control (SFRAC) is a widely used biometric authentication method where a camera captures a user's face image and sends the face information to a backend server to determine an authentication result. In existing systems, user face images or raw facial features are sent to the backend server, which induces privacy concerns. this paper proposes a method to protect user face privacy in SFRAC systems, such that user face images or raw facial features are never sent to the server, but the system can still do face-based access control. the method uses a novel partially order-preserving hash-induced transformation (POP-HIT) to perform feature transformation on facial embeddings. POP-HIT maps a user's facial features to a transformed space in order to preserve privacy. Authentication is performed by checking the transformed facial embedding of the user's face image captured at the time of authentication against the user's pre-stored transformed facial embeddings at the server, based on similarity metrics or machine learning methods. Since the server only sees transformed facial embeddings, which cannot be used to recover the facial image, facial privacy is protected. Analysis and experimental evaluations show that our method has a high authentication accuracy, and it achieves privacy protection without being vulnerable to impersonation attacks.

this paper presents a comprehensive study on the application of computer vision, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), for quality control in automotive interior manufacturing using Injection Molding Machines (IMMs). Despite the high precision and productivity of IMMs, a small percentage of defects persist. Addressing this, the paper compares four popular CNN algorithms—ResNet-50, SegNet, FCN, and PSPNet—on their ability to detect and analyze defects in post-manufacturing. the study outlines the advantages of IMMs, the challenges in defect management, and the potential of CNNs to revolutionize quality control processes. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of these algorithms, paving the way for enhanced quality management and reduced defect rates in the automotive sector. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

the role of anomaly detection systems in Critical Infrastructures (CIs) is critical due to the complexity of CIs and their control systems, which are usually implemented by computer-based controllers that constantly produce logs of their activities. Moreover, many CIs, located in different locations or even belonging to different companies, may share similar application software for controlling the CIs themselves. the goal of this work is to use such logs to perform automatic anomaly detection in a federated learning (FL) paradigm, which ensures that no data is exchanged between sites to train the anomaly detection models, but each learning agent learns on its own data, leveraging the knowledge acquired by the other agents. Our proposed approach - AdaLightLog - which implements a modified FL paradigm with adaptive loss functions at local servers side and weighted averaging of local server models, so to differentiate the quality of the different local servers’ models in the global averaging, is tested against state-of-the-art methods and shows an improvement in performance in terms of accuracy, precision and recall with respect to the standard FL implementation (FedAvg). Furthermore, a comparison between different metrics for the adaptive loss functions and the dynamic weights is presented. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Most artificial intelligence (AI) applications are designed under the model-centric AI (MCAI) approach, where data scientists aim to optimize the machine learning (ML) models starting with fixed, preprocessed data. However, businesses often struggle with limited datasets, changes in data over time, and limited ML knowledge, making it difficult to maintain data quality. One potential approach is data-centric AI (DCAI), which systematically improves the data quality used to build AI systems. However, rapid growth in data volume leads to challenges in selecting the most suitable operations for enhancing data quality thereby maintaining data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability in real-world applications. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework, namely Layered Data-Centric AI (LDCAI) by expanding upon the existing DCAI Pipeline. LDCAI employs a three-layered approach, starting with the DCAI layer which generates the initial training data. this data is then analyzed and refined in the Data Analysis (DA) layer by a team of data scientists and domain experts. the refined data is later sent to the Data Quality control (DQC) layer for additional quality checks and improvements by data scientists. the entire process can be iterated as needed to continuously improve data quality, which can be fed back into the DCAI layer’s model to achieve better predictions and outcomes. the implementation is illustrated through a scalable and customizable architecture designed for optimizing data quality within AI systems. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Collaborative ontology editors and modern version control systems (VCS, such as Github or GitLab) have a prominent role among the best practices of ontology development process. Integrating VCS functionality into collaborative ontology editors is essential for an effective and seamless ontology development workflow. Unfortunately, such an integration is not present in the current landscape of openly licensed software yet. In this study, we aim to bridge this gap between collaborative ontology development and VCS by adding the most common version control workflows into the widely used open-source editor WebProtégé. these common workflows are mostly based on steps such as add, commit, push, clone, checkout and branch commands that can be executed by the REST API or command line of a VCS for a particular repository. Our solution includes associating WebProtégé users with VCS users based on personal access tokens for authenticated utilization of VCS REST APIs, harmonization and abstraction of the non-standard VCS REST API calls into the most common VCS workflows and integrating these workflows into WebProtégé using service and servlet components as well as a convenient Graphical User Interface (GUI). the solution is compatible with the most popular versioning environment Github alongside its open-source equivalent GitLab and is evaluated by its users based on the System Usability Scale (SUS) approach in the scope of this study. the service is publicly available at http://***/wp4tib and the code base can be found at https://***/TIBHannover/webprotege. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
