the possibility to exploit emergent computation in a naturally inspired complex network, namely the reaction-diffusion cellular nonlinear network (RD-CNN), is investigated. the particular application under focus is image processing. It is shown that by implementing a simplified discrete-time model and by using the local activity theory to locate potentially useful regions in the huge parameter space, many useful image processing tasks may be performed in reasonable execution time. Such tasks may include but are not limited to: feature extraction, image enhancement, noise removal, pattern formation, etc. A framework is provided for a systematic design allowing the identification of useful genes (sets of parameters) associated with meaningful image processing tasks.

this paper continues the results obtained by the authors on State Blocking systems (SBS). the approach proposed by the authors is based on the so-called blocking function which may be considered as a new input variable that continuously changes the system structure. the paper deals with an original method for Finite Time Response (FTR) control of the state blocking systems. Because of the blocked components and of the active subsystem uncontrollable components, an SBS system appears as an affine system with FTR control procedures unknown in literature. It is developed a new procedure for the affine systems FTR synthesis, called the equivalent input method. For this purpose it calculates an equivalent input which will determine, according to a quadratic criterion, the best approximation of the affine component. Experimental results are presented to justify the method approached in the paper.

the increasing number of road vehicles is leading to more and more accidents making the driving safety a major research issue. Also, there are other issues that need to be addressed in order to ensure the passengers comfort, to reduce the mechanical components wear and the fuel consumption and to lower emissions. As such, the goal of this paper is to design a cruise controller based on a model predictive control strategy, that uses the concept of flexible control Lyapunov functions to guarantee the input-to-state stability of the system in a non-conservative way. Moreover, the proposed strategy takes into account the time-varying delays introduced by the communication network that links the controller withthe remote process (driveline) by modeling them as disturbances. the cruise controller was tested using TrueTime Toolbox for Matlab/Simulink to show that it can handle boththe performance/physical constraints and the strict limitations on the computational complexity.

the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is widely used in hybrid electric vehicles. the current control is a difficult challenge because is characterized by fast dynamics that are subject to physical and control constraints. As such, this paper presents a novel current control strategy of a PMSM system. It uses a one step ahead model predictive control scheme based on flexible Lyapunov functions concept. Firstly, the quadratic constraints related to the system states and control inputs are approximated with polytopic constraints. then, the current control problem is reduced to a linear program, which can be solved on-line. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme a numerical example is provided and the obtained results show good performance while the physical constraints are satisfied all the time.

Developing algorithms for Ambient Intelligence (AmI) environments involves testing algorithms using both simulated environments and user data. this has been traditionally done with simulators. While there are several datasets for Ambient Intelligence most of them have do not have an open format and a way to use them easily afterwards. We implement a software framework on top of an existing hardware platform for writing AmI applications that can also export a data dump consisting of heterogeneous sensor data matching several criteria from an AmI lab. Researchers using this framework can easily write AmI applications on top of shared datasets and easily test several algorithms against each other using real-world-data, a previously impossible endeavour.
