there are two main approaches in the mathematical modeling of coupled systems of (bio)chemical reactions: continuous, represented by differential equations whose variables are concentrations or discrete, represented by stochastic processes whose variables are numbers of molecules. the latter approach is used mostly for biochemical systems with a low to moderate number of molecules of certain species and this kind of systems are typically modeled as continuous time - discrete state Markov Process. there are exact stochastic algorithms to simulate state trajectories of discrete, stochastic systems and these algorithms are based on methods that are rigorously equivalent to the Master Equation approach. Two of the most widely used methods for simulating the stochastic dynamics of a chemical system are the exact stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA, known also as Gillespie algorithm) and its approximate variant, the tau-leaping algorithm. this paper describes a modified version of SSA - First reaction method - by letting the intensity rates of the reactions to be functions of time. the importance of this adaptation is obvious when considering some classes of biological models (for example, the one involving circadian rhythm). the underlying assumptions are that the system is well stirred such that at any moment, each reactions occur with equal probability at any position, that each reaction, once occurred, completes instantaneously (there are no reactions with delay involved) and that the system is non stiff (there are no different time scales of the reactions involved).

Network science has emerged over the last years as an interdisciplinary area spanning traditional domains including mathematics, computer science, sociology, biology and economics. Since complexity in social, biological and economical systems, and more generally in complex systems, arises through pairwise interactions there exists a surging interest in understanding networks. In this tutorial, we will provide an in-depth presentation of the most popular random-graph models used for modeling real-world networks. We will then discuss efficient algorithmic techniques for mining large graphs, with emphasis on the problems of extracting graph sparsifiers, partitioning graphs into densely connected components, and finding dense subgraphs. We will motivate the problems we will discuss and the algorithms we will present with real-world applications. Our aim is to survey important results in the areas of modeling and mining large graphs, to uncover the intuition behind the key ideas, and to present future research directions. Every person is unique and has different sets of individual traits and characteristics. Although people possess different types of personalities, in the end they manage to understand each other and interact regardless of these differences. Starting from the simplest language elements, a simple remark is that, in general, people use certain words more frequently than others. these words might reveal important aspects of their behavior and even an insight of their psychological traits. With advances in computer technology, automatic analysis tools allow us to quickly evaluate features of what people are trying to express and extract some psychological traits. Our research is focused on finding a viable and, nevertheless, elaborated method of recommending a new member to a team of students working on a university project. In this context, we are exploring the match or complementarity between psychological traits, automatically determined through specific questionnaires and by analyzing the words a person uses in daily activities. Moreover, by combining a predefined questionnaire, lexical indicators with semantic and non-verbal ones and by deploying a collaborative filtering recommending system combined with team formation heuristics, we are able to define a specific approach, based on an educational scenario that can be used for determining and forming teams in an academic environment.

Task parallelism is a programming technique that has been shown to be applicable in a wide variety of problem domains. A central parameter that needs to be controlled to ensure efficient execution of task-parallel programs is the granularity of tasks. When they are too coarse-grained, scalability and load balance suffer, while very fine-grained tasks introduce execution overheads. We present a combined compiler and runtime approach that enables automatic granularity control. Starting from recursive, task parallel programs, our compiler generates multiple versions of each task, increasing granularity by task unrolling and subsequent removal of superfluous synchronization primitives. A runtime system then selects among these task versions of varying granularity by tracking task demand. Benchmarking on a set of task parallel programs using a work-stealing scheduler demonstrates that our approach is generally effective. For fine-grained tasks, we can achieve reductions in execution time exceeding a factor of 6, compared to state-of-the-art implementations.

When components of a system are described by random variables, performance measures such as modal frequencies and modal shapes or amplitudes and phases, are also random variables and the frequency response (FR) requires the solution of a frequency-variant probability problem. this paper presents a new metric to assess the frequency response of uncertain systems and ensure performance measures best meet their limit specifications over the frequency band of interest. the novelty of the approach is the creation of a frequency-invariant probability problem through: a) the discretization of the frequency band of interest into multiple contiguous point frequencies, b) the introduction of new performance indices that measure the probability of failure over the entire frequency band, and c) the introduction of explicit metamodels to provide extremely fast probability evaluations through Monte Carlo simulation. the key to the performance indices are limit-state functions formed at all discrete, contiguous, frequencies. Each limit-state function establishes a non-conformance region in terms of the random design variables. the probabilities of the nonconformance regions are correctly combined to provide a single series-system index to be maximized by adjusting distribution parameters. the simple explicit meta-model is based on Kriging and performance measures at arbitrary design sets are efficiently calculated. Error analysis suggests ways to predict and control the errors. A case study of a vibration absorber mechanism shows how the new methodology provides an improved and timely design.

this paper presents a framework for semi-automatic process of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system upgrade. We suggest to change currently accepted practice of manual upgrade process when domain expert-programmer works through all localizations and transforms them manually to the new version of ERP system. the core idea for this framework is to induce the software code transformation patterns from completed upgrade projects and then to refine these patterns by using knowledge of ERP upgrade expert. these patterns lets us to increase productivity of upgrade process by improving automatic code alignment and annotation and by providing code transformation to the new version of ERP system. the price for these improvements is a requirement for upgrade expert to move from traditional 4/GL ERP programming language to stochastic meta-programming language which is used to describe code alignment and code transformation patterns.

Recent advances in embedded automation applications require quality of results in terms of speed and computational complexity, along with strict time-to-market schedules. To cope with these demands, the design industry is searching for novel approaches. Performance is sought by utilizing modern FPGA devices, offering hundreds of GFLOPs with maximum power efficiency. Productivity is enforced with HighLevel Synthesis (HLS) and Electronic System Level (ESL) design methodologies, that offer an efficient abstraction level to boost-up early prototyping. this paper presents a methodology and the required tool flow for the design of a System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture, as a reference for modern control applications. the advantages of the proposed methodology are: (a) improved performance through hardware acceleration of demanding application cores, (b) improved quality of results with floating point calculations, (c) flexibility and integration of common peripheral devices supported by a RISC microcontroller and (d) improved designer productivity by avoiding Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) and other time consuming and error introducing procedures and working with C level design descriptions only. Experimental results show that the proposed SoC architecture is an efficient rapid prototyping platform for digital control applications, with very promising future extension capabilities. © 2013 Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK - CACS.
