In this work, we study the one-sided block ordering problem with block-interchange distance. Given two signed permutations π and σ of size n, where π represents a partially assembled genome consisting of several blocks (contigs) and σ represents a completely assembled genome, the one-sided block ordering problem is to order (assemble) the blocks of π such that the block-interchange distance between the assembly of π and σ is minimized. In addition to genome rearrangements and phylogeny reconstruction, the one-sided block ordering problem is useful in genome resequencing, because its algorithms can be used to assemble the contigs of partially assembled resequencing genomes based on their completely assembled genomes. By using permutation groups, we design an efficient algorithm to solve the one-sided block ordering problem with block-interchange distance in time. Moreover, we show that the assembly of π can be done in time and its block-interchange distance from σ can also be calculated in advance in time. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Building upon the observation that individuals' decisions to purchase a product are influenced by recommendations from their friends as well as their own preferences, in our work, we propose a new model that factors in people's preferences for a product and the number of his/her neighbors that have adopted this product. In our model, as in related ones, beginning with an active seed set (adopters), an adoption action diffuses in a cascade fashion based on a stochastic rule. We demonstrate that under this model, maximizing individuals' adoption of a product, called the product adoption maximization (PAM) problem, is NP-hard, and the objective function for product adoption is sub-modular for time T (T = 1, 2) when the function for estimating the influence coming from neighbors is sub-linear. Hence, a natural greedy algorithm guarantees an approximation. Furthermore, we show that it is hard to approximate the PAM problem when the function for estimating the influence coming from neighbors is not sub-linear. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Concurrent engineering of system parts with diverging requirements can be extremely challenging. One example are mixed-criticality systems that integrate hard real-time software for safety-critical functionality and general purpose software providing a sophisticated user interface. the automotive industry, as well as other industrial branches, has a growing need to integrate consumer electronics applications (e.g. Linux based) and safety-relevant applications requiring an underlying hard real-time operating system. Some established concepts for mixed-criticality systems can be found in the avionics domain. this paper demonstrates that the principles behind these concepts are a dead end regarding innovations requiring a close interoperation. the second contribution of the paper is to present a different solution approach as a potential remedy that allows the different developer groups (hard real-time and standard IT) to retain their attitude to software development. the core of the novel approach is a worst-case execution time (WCET) directed OS service, which could serve as solution pattern for further problems in mixed-criticality systems. © Springer-Verlag London 2013.

In this paper, we consider communication systems with periodically varying parameters, such as success probability when a user requests service. these systems may be described by a Markov chain of a cyclic structure. We concentrate on investigating the average delay value in such systems. In the general case, a direct solution is given with its complexity being linear of the number of Markov chain states. For the case when the parameters of a system are varying slowly, a fast algorithm of the average delay calculation is proposed. Some applications of our results to contemporary communication systems are demonstrated. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Wireless network providers are under tremendous pressure to deliver unprecedented amounts of data to a variety of mobile devices. A powerful concept that has only gained limited traction in practice has been the concept of opportunistic networks whereby nodes opportunistically communicate with each other when in range to augment or overcome existing wireless systems. One of the key impediments towards the adoption of opportunistic communications has been the inability to demonstrate viability at scale, namely showing that sufficient opportunities exist and more importantly exist when needed to offer significant network performance gains. We demonstrate through a large-scale, longitudinal study of smartphone users that significant opportunities are indeed prevalent, are indeed stable, and end up being reasonably reciprocal both on short and long-term timescales. In this paper, we propose a framework dubbed PSR (Prevalence, Stability, Reciprocity) to capture key aspects that characterize the net potential for opportunistic networks which we feel merit significantly increased attention. © 2013 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc.

In marketing products with negative externalities, a schedule which specifies an order of consumer purchase decisions is crucial, since in the social network of consumers, the decision of each consumer is negatively affected by the choices of her neighbors. In this paper, we study the problems of finding a marketing schedule for two asymmetric products with negative externalites. the goals are two-fold: maximizing the sale of one product and ensuring regret-free purchase decisions. We show that the maximization is NP-hard, and provide efficient algorithms with satisfactory performance guarantees. Two of these algorithms give regret-proof schedules, i.e. they reach Nash equilibria where no consumers regret their previous decisions. Our work is the first attempt to address these marketing problems from an algorithmic point of view. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

this paper describes the implementation of a multi-agent system in a real industrial washing machine production line aiming to integrate process and quality control, allowing the establishment of feedback control loops to support adaptation facing condition changes. For this purpose, the agent-based solution was implemented using the JADE framework, being the shared knowledge structured using a proper ontology, edited and validated in Protégé and posteriorly integrated in the multi-agent system. the solution was intensively tested using historical real production data and it is now being installed in the real production line. the preliminary results confirm the initial expectations in terms of improvement of process performance and product quality. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

One of the most important characteristics of Wireless Sensor Networks is energy efficiency. Exhausted batteries cannot be easily replaced and cause connectivity problems and reduced network life. therefore it is crucial to develop methods to reduce energy usage in those networks. In this work some methods in the MAC layer and network layer were tested in simulations for energy efficiency. the best combinations of methods were used in real implementation for confirmation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

the paper describes a very popular approach to the problem of similarity search, namely methods based on Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH). [Context/Motivation] Different modeling techniques have been used to model requirements and decision-making of self-adaptive systems (SASs). Specifically, goal models have been prolific in supporting decision-making depending on partial and total fulfilment of functional (goals) and non-functional requirements (softgoals). Different goalrealization strategies can have different effects on softgoals which are specified with weighted contribution-links. the final decision about what strategy to use is based, among other reasons, on a utility function that takes into account the weighted sum of the different effects on softgoals. [Questions/Problems] One of the main challenges about decisionmaking in self-adaptive systems is to deal with uncertainty during runtime. New techniques are needed to systematically revise the current model when empirical evidence becomes available from the deployment. [Principal ideas/results] In this paper we enrich the decision-making supported by goal models by using Dynamic Decision Networks (DDNs). Goal realization strategies and their impact on softgoals have a correspondence with decision alternatives and conditional probabilities and expected utilities in the DDNs respectively. Our novel approach allows the specification of preferences over the softgoals and supports reasoning about partial satisfaction of softgoals using probabilities. We report results of the application of the approach on two different cases. Our early results suggest the decision-making process of SASs can be improved by using DDNs. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
