this paper presents preliminary results from experimental u-learning solutions designed to blend different paradigms and technologies, including cloud services. the technical objective was to evaluate the most cost-effective technological solutions for a remote and isolated rural community, having non-permanent internet connection and scarce financial resources. the learning objective was to provide a rural school community with ubiquitous access to knowledge related to forgotten traditional crafts. the educational content was designed by a group of professors and technicians from National University of Arts (NUA) Bucharest. the experiments have been supported by and undertaken within the research grant PN II - "Maps of Time". the paper presents key technical aspects of the solutions, a preliminary evaluation after a 6 month experimentation of the solution with a target group comprising 10 children and 4 school teachers, and also a perspective over the future work.

P2P protocols are responsible for a large amount of the Internet traffic. Given that in such systems each node functions both as a client and as a server, peer connectivity is an important element that influences the overall system performance. the introduction of IPv6 solves a part of the NAT traversal connectivity problems that IPv4 had, and allows a larger number of peers to be connectable from the Internet. Moreover, it introduces built-in IPsec capabilities, lowering the overhead security features bring on the network stack. this places P2P systems in an area that would most benefit from IPv6 deployment. Considering that P2P systems mostly rely of the resources provided by each user, the information collected by measuring such systems offers a real image on the hardware and Internet connection available to the home users. For many years BitTorrent has been the P2P protocol withthe largest contribution to the P2P traffic in the Internet. this paper analyses one of the peer discovery methods available in BitTorrent, DHT, and compares the number of IPv4 and IPv6 node addresses that are available in the DHT system. the paper results are based on an experiment that measured the largest public swarms available on the file-sharing community called the Pirate Bay.

the pipe programming paradigm is an important Unix innovation which lets processes filter data to obtain a desired output. Extending computation in an Internet distributed environment has led us to design so called long and large pipes which achieve high speed transfer rates between remotely interconnected processes. Our method combines, in a full-fledged client/server application, the use of classical pipes, as a mean of serializing data locally, with multiple parallel TCP connections which yield high bandwidththroughput. the application, called bbftpPRO, brings together the old fashioned techniques of file striping withthe new data streaming algorithms at high transfer rates. It includes capabilities for easy traversal of networks protected by firewalls or NAT machines, split-TCP like path support, and last but not least, support for new transmission procedures at variable rate, adapted for multipath implementation at application level. Experimental results have proven the superiority of the proposed data transfer system. Both simple file transfers and arbitrary data streaming were done effectively, efficiently, in parallel, over wide area networks, between pairs of distributed processes connected via extended fast pipes. Our piped approach proved to be portable across heterogeneous systems and most suitable for data intensive computing applications requiring geographically distributed data.

It has been recently suggested that concrete processes occurring on the Sun (e.g. sunspots) significantly affect the tropical cyclogenesis. Despite this finding the current understanding of the processes that generate tropical cyclones is still limited. We herewith present a new complex monitoring tool for the collection and storage of relevant environmental information to solve the problem of the tropical cyclone prediction. More specifically, a three-level methodology for making decisions on the dynamical evolution of the ocean-atmosphere system is suggested. this methodology is based on a recently proposed environmental instability indicator and the use of sequential analysis process within which a stage of training is established, when all boundaries are located. Effectiveness of this methodology is assessed by examination of several examples of tropical hurricanes. More specifically, it is demonstrated how this tool can be employed to monitor the tropical hurricanes, like Katrina (2005), Irene (2011) and Isaac (2012).

the present day FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technology is capable to design high performance embedded systems based on its soft core (MicroBlaze) and hard core (PowerPC) processors, embedded memories and other IP cores. Embedded system design demands use of limited hardware resources with as minimum power as possible while providing higher throughput. One way to decrease the complexity of application is to use a thread-oriented design where a process is divided into a number of manageable pieces known as threads. Each thread is responsible for some part of the application, thus providing multitasking. Further, for real-time task execution we need to have an efficient RTOS (Real Time Operating System) infrastructure on FPGA. Deciding a particular scheduling algorithm for thread execution requires the knowledge of resource utilization for the specific scheduling policy. Hence, a proper exploration of the various thread scheduling algorithms in terms of resource utilization, for a given embedded platform is of much importance. the incorporation of XILKERNEL RTOS in FPGA is a latest facility. though there exists a few research work on analyzing the resource requirement in multitasking scenario for a given embedded RTOS environment, our work on resource estimation for the various task scheduling policies using XILKERNEL is first of its kind. Implementation of real-time scheduling algorithm like RMS on XILKERNEL has also been endeavored, using OS virtualization, since it is not directly supported by the kernel of XILKERNEL.

Real-time systems need reliable guarantees for the satisfaction of their timing constraints. However, novel speed-up hardware architectures and software mechanism, which target improving average-case performances, ignore and sometimes worsen the ability to obtain guarantees. An alternative approach is the Logical Execution Time (LET) model, but there are some deficiencies in existing LET-based development tools. In this paper, we propose a novel LET-based time-aware programming framework called TipFrame. the framework introduces Servants to improve the responsiveness of LET-based periodic tasks further. the runtime makes behaviors in the system level consistent withthe semantics of LET model for predictability. TipFrame implements in C language providing time-aware programming interfaces called TipFrame-C. the programming paradigm of TipFrame-C is described using an autopilot avionic control system. Evaluation results demonstrate that our approach is effective and efficient to construct LET-based real-time systems.
