With many advantages like low cost, faster and non-volatile, NAND flash memory has become a critical component in building security-critical real-time embedded devices. In this paper, we are interested in online optimization of security-sensitive storage applications, whose workloads are unpredictable but have explicit deterministic or probabilistic timing constraints and certain security constraints. Sensitive data must be stored before a specific deadline, otherwise it will lose its validity. To address these challenges, this paper presents a Feedback Vulnerability and Utilization control (FVUC) mechanism. FVUC employs two proportional-integral controllers, the Utilization controller and Vulnerability controller, to build a big feedback loop that dynamically monitors the system run-time status as well as decides how many flash pages would be encrypted by a cryptography algorithm. Relied on the accurate model and design, FVUC can make a balance between the utilization and vulnerability, and achieve a better overall performance. the advantages of FVUC are verified by a series of simulation experiments under a broad range of system configurations and run-time uncertainties.

Aerospace cyber-physical system design focuses on the mutual impact of cyberspace and physical world. In this paper, we propose a multi-dimension, multi-domain and multi-paradigm architecture approach for cyber physical systems. It integrates Modelica and AADL based on model-driven architecture to construct multi-dimension, multi-domain and multi-view approach for aerospace cyber physical systems. We divide aerospace cyber physical system into three dimensions: physical world dimension, communication dimension and computation dimension. We design the system from physical world view, functional view, static view, spatio-temporal view, Non-functional view, hardware view. the physical world analysis is considered to be one fundamental stage of our proposed method. the proposed method is illustrated by the modeling of the lunar rover system, which involves a broad range of mechanical, electronic, control, communications, computing, mechanics, and physics. In this paper, we specify and model the lunar rover system by extending Modelica and AADL.

[Motivation:] the requirements engineering (RE) research community is aware of the importance of performing feasibility studies before starting requirements elicitation. Unfortunately, projects still frequently fail to achieve commercial success, responsibility is often unknown, and requirements engineers may be deemed responsible for mistakes made by others. [Problem:] there is neither empirical evidence available from a post-mortem risk analysis for projects that performed adequate RE but commercially failed nor guidance for requirements engineers on validating a business case analysis to mitigate this risk. [Principal idea:] By performing a post-mortem analysis of software development projects that failed to achieve commercial success, we investigate the root causes for the failures and, in most cases, trace the causes back to business case issues. We identify risk areas and provide practical due diligence guidance to the practitioner. [Contribution:] this exploratory case study performs an in-depth review of a detailed post-mortem analysis of three software development projects performed over a 2.5 year period. Each of the analyzed projects failed to make the expected transition to commercialization despite using appropriate RE techniques and achieving satisfactory deliverables. the analysis identifies risk factors that the RE practitioner should consider and we provide a checklist for RE practitioners to use when checking for these risks in an antecedent business case as part of their due diligence. A low-cost commercial viability assessment technique, employing Fermi approximation, is provided to equip the RE practitioner with a risk mitigation tool in the absence of business analyst resources. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we introduce and evaluate a novel approach, namely the use of the cross correlation matrix and Maximum Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT) to analyse SenseCam lifelog data streams. SenseCam is a device that can automatically record images and other data from the wearer's whole day. It is a significant challenge to deconstruct a sizeable collection of images into meaningful events for users. the cross-correlation matrix was used, to characterise dynamical changes in non-stationary multivariate SenseCam images. MODWT was then applied to equal-time CorrelationMatrices over different time scales and used to explore the granularity of the largest Eigenvalue and changes, in the ratio of the sub-dominant Eigenvalue spectrum dynamics, over sliding time windows. By examination of the eigenspectrum, we show that these approaches can identify "Distinct Significant Events" for the wearers. the dynamics of the Eigenvalue spectrum across multiple scales provide useful insight on details of major events in SenseCam logged images. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

the paradigm of software-defined networks (SDNs) and one of its enabling technologies, OpenFlow, have been widely welcomed by researchers and practitioners because of their flexibility in networking. Most cloud operators are attracted by the ability to “virtualize” networks at data centers, which is one of the most appealing out of various promising applications. How virtual networking is implemented in SDNs still remains to be solved in future research despite such enthusiasm to achieve virtualization. When researchers are involved in SDN investigations, they soon notice the tediousness of setting up the study environment, which consists of virtual machines (VMs), switches, and SDN controllers. therefore, they need to spend a great deal of effort and time on non-essential parts of their studies. We present Kumoi in this paper, which is an integrated development framework for VMs, switches, and SDNs. Kumoi enables us to rapidly deploy VMs along with OpenFlow networking. Kumoi is not just an OpenFlow controller, but it also provides the ability to manage VMs in a single environment. We believe Kumoi could accelerate research on VMs and SDNs.

Macrocell Base stations, called the Enhanced NodeB (eNB) are mainly aiming to serve outdoor users. However, due to insufficient signal strength this solution has difficulty in serving indoor users. To address this problem, the Femtocell, called the Home eNB(HeNB), system has been deployed in the LTE system. Since the HeNBs and the eNB use the same frequency band and the same frame structure, co-channel interference between HeNBs and eNB is unavoidable. To solve this problem, we propose a co-channel interference (CCI) avoidance scheme using the control information in the downlink subframe. Simulation results show the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional two-tier LTE femtocell systems in terms of the outage probability and the system throughput.

the paper presents a new, nondestructive method of determination of the air-tightness of metal packagings of transistors. this method is based on the thermoacoustic approach with a microphone detection. thermoacoustic approach means that the sound is generated by the periodical temperature of the element caused by the periodical electric power dissipation in it. In the paper both the experimental thermoacoustic frequency characteristics as also the theoretical approach applied for numerical interpretations of experimental data are presented and discussed.

Effective task assignment, which is essential for achieving high performance in a heterogeneous multiprocessor system, remains a challenging problem despite extensive studies. this paper addresses the task assignment problem with guaranteed reliability and timing constraint for heterogeneous multiprocessor system. Inherently, heterogeneous systems are more complex than homogeneous systems. the added complexity could increase the potential for system failures. In this paper, we describe a method to determine an assignment which satisfies the timing constraint and the reliability requirement. We develop an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation to find the optimal solutions. For the general problem, the task assignment problem is NP-Complete. therefore, we propose a polynomial-time heuristic algorithm, DAG Heu algorithm, to solve the general problem. Experimental results on benchmark task graphs of several well-known parallel applications show that the proposed algorithm and the ILP formulation significantly outperform existing algorithms.

As computers and Internet technology advance, many time-dependent applications, such as mobile navigation and online gaming, are emerging. Time-dependent applications are associated with a pair of time-dependent functions representing accrued gain at the time when tasks complete or accrued cost when tasks fail to complete, respectively. For systems that provide time-dependent services, the optimization goal is to maximize the system profit when both potential gain and potential cost exist for each request the system accepts. this paper presents two scheduling algorithms, prediction-based highest gain density first (PHGDF) and iterative PHGDF (iPHGDF) scheduling algorithms with the objective to maximize the system's total accrued profit. Simulation results provide clear evidence that, with respect to the system total accrued profit, the proposed PHGDF and iPHGDF algorithms have advantages over other commonly used scheduling algorithm, such as the Earliest Deadline First (EDF), the Generic Utility Scheduling (GUS) and the Profit and Penalty aware scheduling (PP-aware) algorithms.

In recent years, virtualization technology enables multiple virtual machines to run on a physical machine, where each virtual machine can run independently and own its operating system. Virtualization technology has been adopted in many IT industries because of its ability to improve hardware resource utilization, achieve low-power consumption, simplify server management, and reduce maintenance cost. However, since the hardware limitation of storage devices, I/O capacity could cause performance bottleneck. In the paper, we will propose a hybrid storage access framework for virtualization environment to dynamically adjust and enhance I/O performance by using solid-state drives (SSDs).
