Attribute-based communication provides a novel mechanism to dynamically select groups of communicating entities by relying on predicates over their exposed attributes. In this paper, we embed the basic primitives for attribute-based communication into the functional concurrent language Erlang to obtain what we call AErlang, for attribute Erlang. To evaluate our prototype in terms of performance overhead and scalability we consider solutions of the Stable Marriage Problem based on predicates over attributes and on the classical preference lists, and use them to compare the runtime performance of AErlang with those of Erlang and X10. the outcome of the comparison shows that the overhead introduced by the new communication primitives is acceptable, and our prototype can compete performance-wise with an ad-hoc parallel solution in X10.

In this paper, a parallel loop self-scheduling scheme for heterogeneous PC cluster systems is proposed. though the proposed scheme does allow users to choose parameters before the execution initialization phase, there are still weaknesses that motivate us to go further with new improvements in that scheme. For instance, a decision on a fixed and monotonous parameter can easily lead to invalid schedule by using previous input information. thus, it is proposed in this paper a new scheme, where the scheduling parameter can be adjusted dynamically and fit into most widely available computer systems, in order to provide higher overall performance. © 2005 IEEE.

this paper introduces FLEX-MPI, a novel runtime approach for the dynamic load balancing of MPI-based SPMD applications running on heterogeneous platforms in the presence of dynamic external loads. To effectively balance the workload, FLEX-MPI monitors the actual performance of applications via hardware counters and the MPI profiling interface-with a negligible overhead and minimal code modifications. Our results show that by using this approach the execution time of an application may be significantly reduced.

We propose an architecture which supports the behavioral self-optimization of complex systems. In this architecture we bring together specification-based reasoning and the framework of ant colony optimization (ACO). By this we provide a foundation for distributed reasoning about different properties of the solution space represented by different viewpoint specifications. As a side-effect of reasoning we propagate the information about promising areas in the solution space to the curr ent state. Consequently the system's decisions can be improved by considering the long term values of certain behavioral trajectories (given a certain situational horizon). We consider this feature to be a contribution to autonomic computing.

Around the world there has been an advancement of IoT edge devices, that in turn have enabled the collection of rich datasets as part of the Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) paradigm, which in practice is implemented in a variety of safety critical applications. In spite of the advantages of such datasets, there exists an inherent data trustworthiness challenge due to the interference of malevolent actors. In this context, there has been a great body of proposed solutions which capitalize on conventional machine algorithms for sifting through faulty data without any assumptions on the trustworthiness of the source. However, there is still a number of open issues, such as how to cope with strong colluding adversaries, while in parallel managing efficiently the sizable influx of user data. In this work we suggest that the usage of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) can lead to even more efficient performance as we tackle the limitation of conventional black box models, by enabling the understanding and interpretation of a model's operation. Our approach enables the reasoning of the model's accuracy in the presence of adversaries and has the ability to shun out faulty or malicious data, thus, enhancing the model's adaptation process. To this end, we provide a prototype implementation coupled with a detailed performance evaluation under different scenarios of attacks, employing both real and synthetic datasets. Our results suggest that the use of XAI leads to improved performance compared to other existing schemes. © 2023 IEEE.

Mobile computing systems are increasingly difficult to configure, operate, and manage. To reduce operation and maintenance cost plus meet user's expectation with respect to QoS, the computing system and its building blocks should be self-managed. When addressing the challenges associated with architecting self-managed mobile computing systems, one must take a holistic view on QoS management and the heterogonous entities in the mobile environment. this paper presents a novel model that combines resources and context elements. It helps us in modelling the environment and design resource and context managers that support functions for adapting the application to changes in the environment. the model is applied on a video streaming application for mobile terminals: i) resource and context elements are classified, ii) their QoS characteristics and context properties are modelled, and iii) weakly integrated resource and context managers are presented and validated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

In this paper, we present a distributed architecture for indexing and serving large and diverse datasets. It incorporates and extends the functionality of Hadoop, the open source MapReduce framework, and of HBase, a distributed, sparse, NoSQL database, to create a fully parallel indexing system. Experiments with structured, semi-structured and unstructured data of various sizes demonstrate the flexibility, speed and robustness of our implementation and contrast it with similarly oriented projects. Our 11 node cluster prototype managed to keep full-text indexing time of 150GB raw content in less than 3 hours, whereas the system's response time under sustained query load of more than 1000 queries/sec was kept in the order of milliseconds. © 2010 ACM.

A powerful and widely-used method for analyzing the performance behavior of parallel programs is event tracing. When an application is traced, performancerelevant events, such as entering functions or sending messages, are recorded at runtime and analyzed post-mortem to identify and potentially remove performance problems. While event tracing enables the detection of performance problems at a high level of detail, growing trace-file size often constrains its scalability on large-scale systems and complicates management, analysis, and visualization of trace data. In this article, we survey current approaches to handle large traces and classify them according to the primary issues they address and the primary benefits they offer. © 2006 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI).
