In current distributed systems, such as Grids, Clouds, or P2P systems, the amount of information to handle influences the way the system is managed. In P2P systems containing large quantities of data, or in Grid systems containing a large number of (often heterogeneous) resources, information about data or resources must be spread through the system in an efficient way in order to allow them to be found. An information discovery technique based on data summarization, via clustering, is presented. these summaries can be used to classify information to provide users with greater insight about documents or computing resources compared to raw data. Also, meta-schedulers or brokers would benefit from the proposed technique due to the fact that they would have to deal with less data from resources, thus aiding to the scalability of the system. An evaluation of the approach is subsequently provided to identify the impact of choosing particular parameters to be used as part of the summary.

Virtualization technologies radically changed the way in which distributed architectures are exploited. With the contribution of VM capabilities and with the emergence of IaaS platforms, more and more frameworks tend to manage VMs across distributed architectures like operating systems handle processes on a single node. Taking into account that most of these frameworks follow a centralized model - where roughly one node is in charge of the management of VMs - and considering the growing size of infrastructures in terms of nodes and VMs, new proposals relying on more autonomic and decentralized approaches should be submitted. Designing and implementing such models is a tedious and complex task. However, as well as research studies on OSes and hypervisors are complementary at the node level, we advocate that virtualization frameworks can benefit from lessons learnt from distributed operating system proposals. In this article, we motivate such a position by analyzing similarities between OSes and virtualization frameworks. More precisely, we focus on the management of processes and VMs, first at the node level and then on a cluster scale. From our point of view, such investigations can guide the community to design and implement new proposals in a more autonomic and distributed way.

the operation of policy tables, for access control (firewalls) and for routing (flow tables), is a major component in networks. For example, one of the most important bottlenecks in the Internet is the time taken by backbone routers to resolve packets. In practice, such routers use special hardware such as Ternary Content-Addressable Memory. How well do standard architectures for parallel computing work to speed up such operations? At first glance, it appears that first match policies such as firewalls might force a serial approach, where the only mechanism for speeding up packet processing is to handle different packets on different cores. However, we show in this paper that the operation of packet-processing policies for each individual packet can in fact be sped up with a PRAM parallel computer. We go on to demonstrate how to build a policy engine for XMT (Explicit Multi threading), a practical near-PRAM architecture and instruction set, and present some performance results.

OpenCL has emerged as the open standard for parallel programming for heterogeneous platforms enabling a uniform framework to discover, program, and distribute parallel workloads to the diverse set of compute units in the hardware. For that reason, there have been efforts exploring the advantages of parallelism from the OpenCL framework by offloading GPGPU workloads within an HPC cluster environment. In this paper, we present an OpenCL-based remote offloading framework designed for mobile platforms by shifting the motivation and advantages of using the OpenCL framework for the HPC cluster environment into mobile cloud computing where OpenCL workloads can be exported from a mobile node to the cloud. Furthermore, our offloading framework handles service discovery, access control, and data privacy by building the framework on top of a social peer-to-peer virtual private network, SocialVPN. We developed a prototype implementation and deployed it into local-and wide-area environments to evaluate the performance improvement and energy implications of the proposed offloading framework. Our results show that, depending on the complexity of the workload and the amount of data transfer, the proposed architecture can achieve more energy efficient performance by offloading than executing locally.

the development of Grid environment provides an efficient way for implementing the parallel algorithm. Here we focus on the discovery of short recurring patterns in DNA sequences that represent binding sites for certain proteins in the process of gene regulation. We develop parallel computing algorithm for solving this problem by partitioning the overall DNA sequences. this provides us an option to implement the algorithm on Grid and to evaluate its performance. We use the open source software "Alchemi" for building the Grid environment. Also by using a merging repeat approach to find these patterns, we address other related problems, including finding of repetition with insertion and deletion.

With the advances of networking and cloud computing technologies, many web services are often implemented as cloud services by different service providers, and some SPs compose those services to create an end-to-end network service. In this service-oriented network virtualization environment, two important but somehow contradictory technical challenges are 1) how to select an optimal service path in order to meet the QoS requirements by users, and 2) how to balance the loads to fully utilize the whole systems. In this paper, we present an adaptive service path selection algorithm in service-oriented network virtualization environment, which assures QoS and balances the load at the same time. the proposed algorithm selects appropriate component services from multiple candidate service instances running on virtual machines and creates an optimal service path satisfying the users' QoS requirements. Our algorithm also dynamically adapts to the optimal service path based on various changes. Since the proposed algorithm handles a variation of the multi-constrained path selection problem known as NP-complete, we formulate the problem using ant colony optimization algorithm. the experimental results show that our algorithm guarantees the maximal QoS to the users while balancing the load at the same time, and adapts to the optimal service path based on the situational changes.

In the era of cloud computing, datacenters are well-known to be bounded by the power wall issue. this issue lowers the profit of service providers and obstructs the expansions of datacenter's scale. As virtual machine's behavior was not explored sufficiently in classic datacenter's power-saving strategies, in this paper we address the power consumption issue in the setting of a virtualized datacenter. We propose an efficient power-aware resource scheduling strategy that reduces datacenter's power consumption effectively based on VM live migration which is a key technical feature of cloud computing. Our scheduling algorithm leverages the Xen platform and consolidates VM workloads periodically to reduce the number of running servers. To satisfy each VM's service level agreements, our strategy keeps adjusting VM placements between scheduling rounds. We developed a power-aware datacenter simulator to test our algorithm. the simulator runs in time domain and includes server's segmented linear power model. We validated our simulator using measured server power trace. Our simulation shows that compared with event-driven schedulers, our strategy improves datacenter power budget by 35% for random workloads resembling web-requests, and improve datacenter power budget by 22.7% for workloads exhibiting stable resource requirements like ScaLAPACK.

this paper considers the workflow scheduling problem in Clouds with the hourly charging model and data transfer times. It deals with the allocation of tasks to suitable VM instances while maintaining the precedence constraints on one hand and meeting the workflow deadline on the other. A bi-direction adjust heuristic (BDA) is proposed for the considered problem. Matching of tasks and the VM types is modeled as Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) problem and solved using CPLEX at the first stage of BDA. In the second stage, forward and backward scheduling procedures are applied to allocate tasks to VM instances according to the result of the first stage. In the backward scheduling procedure, a priority rule considering the finish time, wasted time fractions and added hours is developed to make appropriate matches of tasks and free time slots. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed BDA heuristic outperforms the existing state-of-the-art heuristic ICPCP in all cases. Further, compared with ICPCP, about 80% percentage of VM renting cost is saved for instances with 900 tasks at most.

the usage of remote compute and storage resources is becoming popular to assist mobile devices. However, existing frameworks that support mobile client/server applications do not consider the provision of resources in a large scale. Although a cloud-based infrastructure may provide a large number of resources on demand, most cloud offerings do not provide the right level of abstraction to assist mobile devices. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offerings are too complex to set up on demand and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings are not flexible enough regarding Quality-of-Service (QoS) adjustment. To overcome these issues, we propose a middleware named Mobile Assistance Platform (MAP), which serves as an extended PaaS layer. It provides an on-demand execution platform for program code, but with the additional ability to select the underlying VM quality for execution. Furthermore, each mobile request is assigned to a single VM instance for processing. MAP provides configurable compute resources for mobile users in a large scale. For this demo, we have set up MAP on the Amazon EC2 infrastructure and we present two mobile applications that can benefit from the on-demand resource quality selection.

In large organizations and small firms in transportation, there is a growing need to use and analyze spatial data. Transportation system analysis and planning as well as mobility studies frequently use Geographic Information systems (GIS). In this paper we propose the development of a web services platform dedicated to transportation and logistics. Taking advantage of the web services development framework PyOpenCF we integrate in the same environment services oriented to geolocalization, logistical optimization, etc. We develop a PyOpenCF client whose graphic interface allows processes with spatial data to be launched and provides a visualization of the results.
