An optimal mobile agent moving policy for a mobile agent network where a single mobile agent moves and collects management information, is studied. the network has one management station that maintains many network elements each of which generates the management information (e.g., the updated state of the element). We formulate this network model as a semi-Markov decision process (SMDP) and compute an optimal policy with a policy iteration algorithm. It is shown that an optimal mobile agent moving policy achieved by the policy iteration algorithm has a cost reduction effect for the network in comparison to a heuristic policy.

Breadth-first search (BFS) is an essential graph traversal strategy widely used in many computing applications. Because of its irregular data access patterns, BFS has become a non-trivial problem hard to parallelize efficiently. In this paper, we introduce a parallelization strategy that allows the load balancing of computation resources as well as the execution of graph traversals in hybrid environments composed of CPUs and GPUs. To achieve that goal, we use a fine-grained task-based parallelization scheme and the OmpSs programming model. We obtain processing rates up to 2.8 billion traversed edges per second with a single GPU and a multi-core processor. Our study shows high processing rates are achievable with hybrid environments despite the GPU communication latency and memory coherence.

Large-scale graph problems are becoming increasingly important in science and engineering. the irregular, sparse instances are especially challenging to solve on cache-based architectures as they are known to incur erratic memory access patterns. Yet many of the algorithms also exhibit some degree of regularity with memory accesses. It is important to characterize the locality behavior in order to bridge the gap between algorithm and architecture. In our study we quantify the locality of several fundamental graph algorithms, both sequential and parallel, and correlate our observations with the algorithmic design. Our study of locality behavior brings insight into the impact of different cache architectures on the performance of both sequential and parallel graph algorithms.

this paper explores the characteristics of job migration between different parallel compute sites in a decentralized Grid scenario sharing a central job pool. Independent users are assumed to submit their jobs to their local site MPP installation, which in turn is allowed to decline the local execution of jobs by offering them to a central job pool. the simulation results are obtained using real workload traces and compared to the EASY backfilling single site algorithm. It is shown that even simple job pooling is beneficial for all high utilized sites as it is possible to achieve shorter response times for jobs compared to the best single-site scheduling results. Further, new insights are provided about the amount, characteristics, and distribution of the migrated jobs.

Benefitting from the combination of the idea of pipeline with model parallelism and data parallelism, pipeline parallelism improves the efficiency of distributed deep learning systems significantly. However, suffering from the bubbles and gaps caused by the imbalance of different stages in pipeline, it can not output ideal performance yet. To explore the potential of pipeline parallelism further, we propose a novel approach called PipePrune, which adds a convolutional layer pruning strategy to pipeline creatively to reduce the bubbles and gaps. For the convolutional layers with heavy overheads, some unimportant kernels are pruned by the measurement of the L1-norm. this approach makes the processing overheads of different pipeline stages more balanced. the experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art pipeline methods, PipePrune can improve the training speeds obviously (e.g. for ResNet50 on ImageNet, about 30% speed improvement is realized with only 1.1% loss of training accuracies). © 2021 IEEE.

With the vigorous development of network applications, typical SDN (Software Defined Networks) such as data centers are gradually carrying more and more complex network traffic. this poses a great challenge for network monitoring - how to realize real-time, high-accuracy capture of traffic changes at low cost. In this paper, we propose a trigger-based monitoring approach called EffiView. this approach provides three ways to monitor flow statistics, including flow-stat triggering, FlowRemoved parsing and active polling. the flow-stat triggering can occur on all multiples of the presupposed flow-stat threshold for each flow entry. the latter two ways are complementary to the flow-stat triggering. FlowRemoved parsing is used to acquire flow statistics from FlowRemoved messages and active polling is conditionally carried out by the controller at the expiration of monitoring period. EffiView achieves low-cost monitoring by combining the three ways efficiently, while ensuring high accuracy and fine granularity. Based on the NetMagic platform, We implement EffiView and evaluate its monitoring performance. the experimental results show that EffiView can reach great advantages over traditional monitoring approaches.

the severe energy constraints of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require energy-efficient communication protocols in order to fulfill the objectives of the application. Cross-layer design is a technique which can potentially be used to improve the overall performance of WSNs by way of jointly optimizing and exploiting the interactions between various layers of the network protocol stack. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer framework design for the Embedded Middleware in Mobility Applications (EMMA) project. this optimization agent based framework design provides efficient data exchange between the various protocols layers via a state repository to improve the performance of WSN applications in terms of memory consumption and processing overhead.

Graph Partitioning has several important applications in Computer Science, including VLSI circuit layout, image processing, and distributing workloads for parallel computation. It is known to be NP-hard. In this paper we present in detail the K-Graph Partitioning Problem and the Dynamic distributed Double Guided Genetic Algorithm. this algorithm consists of agents dynamically created and cooperated in order to solve the problem. Each agent performs its own genetic algorithm, guided by the min-conflict-heuristic. the paper also presents the results of application the algorithm for the $K$-Graph Partitioning Problem using a multilevel paradigm.

Visualization facilitates the understanding of scientific data both through exploration and explanation of the visualized data. Provenance also contributes to the understanding of data by containing the contributing factors behind a result. the visualization of provenance, although supported in existing workflow management systems, generally focuses on small (medium) sized provenance data, lacking techniques to deal with big data with high complexity. this paper discusses visualization techniques developed for exploration and explanation of provenance, including layout algorithm, visual style, graph abstraction techniques, and graph matching algorithm, to deal with the high complexity. We demonstrate through application to two extensively analyzed case studies that involved provenance capture and use over three year projects, the first involving provenance of a satellite imagery ingest processing pipeline and the other of provenance in a large-scale computer network testbed.

the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) paradigm allows service providers and/or end-users to outsource the computing resources they need. Cloud providers offer the infrastructure as a utility with a pay-per-use model, relying on virtualization technologies to provide hardware resources to the cloud consumers. IaaS can potentially bring obvious advantages, but the virtualized resources use to be manually controlled by the consumers, and this may lead to unaffordable administration costs. the demand of computing resources can fluctuate from one time to another and managing the virtual machines "rented" to the cloud provider to meet peak requirements but to avoid overprovisioning, is a significant challenge. this paper presents AMAS (Automatic MAchine Scaling), a distributed solution capable of automatically creating and releasing virtual machines in order to minimize the number of virtual resources instantiated to run an application and to meet the consumer performance requirements. Furthermore, the complete design and a first real implementation of this solution is described to validate that it is capable of handling sudden load changes, maintaining the desired quality of service, minimizing the number of virtual machines and significantly reducing the consumer management efforts.
