Autonomous vehicles (AVs) heavily rely on LiDAR perception for environment understanding and navigation. LiDAR intensity provides valuable information about the reflected laser signals and plays a crucial role in enhancing the perception capabilities of AVs. However, accurately simulating LiDAR intensity remains a challenge due to the unavailability of material properties of the objects in the environment, and complex interactions between the laser beam and the environment. the proposed method aims to improve the accuracy of intensity simulation by incorporating physics-based modalities within the deep learning framework. One of the key entities that captures the interaction between the laser beam and the objects is the angle of incidence. In this work, we demonstrate that adding the LiDAR incidence angle as a separate input modality to the deep neural networks significantly enhances the results. We integrated this novel input modality into two prominent deep learning architectures: U-NET, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Pix2Pix, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). We investigated these two architectures for the intensity prediction task and used SemanticKITTI and VoxelScape datasets for experiments. the comprehensive analysis reveals that both architectures benefit from the incidence angle as an additional input. Moreover, the Pix2Pix architecture outperforms U-NET, especially when the incidence angle is incorporated. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Mitochondria are essential organelles crucial for energy generation and cellular functions. Accurate segmentation of mitochondria from microscopy images is vital for understanding their morphology and functionality. this paper presents an enhanced segmentation method that integrates U-Net and VGG19 architectures, leveraging their combined strengths to improve precision. Previous studies in mitochondrial segmentation faced challenges such as low accuracy in boundary detection, insufficient diversity in training data, and less suitable loss functions. Traditional methods often failed to accurately distinguish complex mitochondrial structures. the proposed approach in this paper combines U-Net and VGG19 architectures and employs diverse data augmentation techniques, resulting in improved model generalization and accuracy. the use of the Jaccard loss function also enhances the training process. Tested on real datasets, the proposed method achieved an impressive IoU of 91% and a loss value of 0.02%, significantly outperforming existing methods and setting a new benchmark in mitochondrial segmentation. ©2024 IEEE.

the publication of scientific results together with the underlying experiments is an important source of further research. In 2016, the "FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship" were published, in which the authors postulate a series of guidelines for improving the (F)indability, (A)ccessibility, (I)nteroperability and (R)eusability of digital information (FAIR). the point (I)nteroperability deals with the prerequisites for the reusability of digital objects. the central point here is the need to have a common understanding of the meaning of digital objects. this understanding is provided by formal languages of knowledge representation (ontologies), which describe the actual data. these descriptions of data are also known as metadata. As part of our current work at the Institute for Automation and Applied Computer Science (IAI) at KIT, we are implementing novel concepts and technologies for the sustainable handling of research data using high-quality metadata. As part of this work, we plan to develop a software tool that can be used to enrich data with suitable metadata and thus automate the process of making research results available. A key requirement is that the tool must be independent of the underlying domain. In order to be able to deal with data from any domain, we have opted for a model-driven approach in which an ontology, and possibly other platform-specific information, are input for a software generator, which then generates an (interactive) tool for specifying the metadata and linking it to the data itself. the generated tool includes the complete software stack, starting with a user interface, programmatic APIs for connecting additional application logic, and a persistence component. How these individual layers are realized is not specified, but defined by the mapping rules of the software generator, which also opens up the possibility of generating and evaluating different variants of the software. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS

Cell-laden, scaffold-based tissue engineering methods have been successfully utilized for the treatment of bone fractures and diseases, caused by factors such as trauma, tumors, congenital anomalies, and aging. In such methods, the rate of scaffold biodegradation, transport of nutrients and growth factors, as well as removal of cell metabolic wastes at the site of injury are critical fluid-dynamics factors, affecting cell proliferation and ultimately tissue regeneration. therefore, there is a critical need to identify the underlying material transport mechanisms and factors associated with cell-seeded, scaffold-based bone tissue engineering. the overarching goal of this study is to contribute to patient-specific, clinical treatment of bone pathology. the overall objective of the work is to establish computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to identify: (i) the consequential mechanisms behind internal and external material transport through/over porous bone scaffolds and (ii) optimal triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) scaffold designs toward cell-laden bone fracture treatment. In this study, 10 internal-flow and 10 external-flow CFD models were established using ANSYS, correspondingly based on 10 single-unit TPMS bone scaffold designs, where the geometry of each design was parametrically created using Rhinoceros 3D software. the influence of several design parameters, such as surface representation iteration, merged toggle iso value, and wall thickness, on geometry accuracy as well as computational time, was investigated in order to obtain computationally efficient and accurate CFD models. the fluid properties (such as density and dynamic viscosity) as well as the boundary conditions (such as no-slip condition, inlet flow velocity, and pressure outlet) of the CFD models were set based on clinical/research values reported in the literature as well as according to the fundamentals of internal/external Newtonian flow modeling. Security patches are essential for enhancing the stability and robustness of projects in the open-source software community. While vulnerabilities are officially expected to be patched before being disclosed, patching vulnerabilities is complicated and remains a struggle for many organizations. To patch vulnerabilities, security practitioners typically track vulnerable issue reports (IRs), and analyze their relevant insecure code to generate potential patches. However, the relevant insecure code may not be explicitly specified and practitioners cannot track the insecure code in the repositories, thus limiting their ability to generate patches. In such cases, providing examples of insecure code and the corresponding patches would benefit the security developers to better locate and resolve the actual insecure code. In this paper, we propose PATUNTRACK, an automated approach to generating patch examples from IRs without tracked insecure code. PATUNTRACK utilizes auto-prompting to optimize the Large Language Model (LLM) to make it applicable for analyzing the vulnerabilities described in IRs and generating appropriate patch examples. Specifically, it first generates the completed description of the Vulnerability-Triggering Path (VTP) from vulnerable IRs. then, it corrects potential hallucinations in the VTP description with external golden knowledge. Finally, it generates Top-K pairs of Insecure Code and Patch Example based on the corrected VTP description. To evaluate the performance of PATUNTRACK, we conducted experiments on 5,465 vulnerable IRs. the experimental results show that PATUNTRACK can obtain the highest performance and improve the traditional LLM baselines by +17.7% (MatchFix) and +14.6% (Fix@10) on average in patch example generation. Furthermore, PATUNTRACK was applied to generate patch examples for 76 newly disclosed vulnerable IRs. 27 out of 37 replies from the authors of these IRs confirmed the usefulness of the patch examples generated by PATUNTRACK,

Cross-Project Defect Prediction (CPDP) has gained considerable research interest due to the scarcity of historical labeled defective modules in a project. Although there are several approaches for CPDP, most of them contains several parameters that need to be tuned optimally to get the desired performance. Often, higher computational complexities of these methods make it difficult to tune these parameters. Moreover, existing methods might fail to align the shape and structure of the source and target data which in turn deteriorates the prediction performance. Addressing these issues, we investigate correlation alignment for CPDP (CCPDP) and compare it with state-of-the-art transfer learning methods. Rigorous experimentation over three benchmark datasets AEEEM, RELINK and SOFTLAB that include 46 different project-pairs, demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of F1-score, Balance and AUC compared to six other methods TCA, TCA+, JDA, BDA, CTKCCA and DMDA JFR. In terms of AUC, CCPDP wins at least 32 and at most 42 out of 46 project pairs compared to all transfer learning based method. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

the rapid adoption of remote and hybrid work models in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to communication and coordination within software development teams, affecting how various activities are executed. Nowadays, these changes are shaping the new post-pandemic environments and continue to impact software teams. In this context, our study explores the characteristics and challenges of remote communication between software developers and software testers. We investigated how these professionals have adapted to the unique circumstances imposed by COVID-19, especially because many of them have now become permanent in the software industry. In this process, we explored their communication practices and interaction dynamics and how they potentially affect software evolution and quality. Our findings reveal that the transition to remote and hybrid work has resulted in notable changes in communication patterns and task coordination, which could potentially affect the overall quality of project deliverables. Additionally, we highlight the importance of adapting existing workflows, introducing new management practices, and investing in technology to facilitate remote interaction among developers and testers.

Capstone courses in undergraduate software engineering are a critical final milestone for students. these courses allow students to create a software solution and demonstrate the knowledge they accumulated in their degrees. However, a typical capstone project team is small containing no more than 5 students and function independently from other teams. To better reflect real-world software development and meet industry demands, we introduce in this paper our novel capstone course. Each student was assigned to a large-scale, multi-team (i.e., company) of up to 20 students to collaboratively build software. Students placed in a company gained first-hand experiences with respect to multi-team coordination, integration, communication, agile, and teamwork to build a microservices based project. Furthermore, each company was required to implement plug-and-play so that their services would be compatible with another company, thereby sharing common APIs. through developing the product in autonomous sub-teams, the students enhanced not only their technical abilities but also their soft skills such as communication and coordination. More importantly, experiencing the challenges that arose from the multi-team project trained students to realize the pitfalls and advantages of organizational culture. Among many lessons learned from this course experience, students learned the critical importance of building team trust. We provide detailed information about our course structure, lessons learned, and propose recommendations for other universities and programs. Our work concerns educators interested in launching similar capstone projects so that students in other institutions can reap the benefits of large-scale, multi-team development.

In this work, we present Robots for Social Justice (R4SJ): a framework for an equitable engineering practice of Human-Robot Interaction, grounded in the engineering for Social Justice (E4SJ) framework for engineering Education and intended to complement existing frameworks for guiding equitable HRI research. To understand the new insights this framework could provide to the feld of HRI, we analyze the past decade of papers published at the ACM/IEEE international conference on Human-Robot Interaction, and examine how well current HRI research aligns with the principles espoused in the E4SJ framework. Based on the gaps identifed through this analysis, we make fve concrete recommendations, and highlight key questions that can guide the introspection for engineers, designers, and researchers. We believe these considerations are a necessary step not only to ensure that our engineering education eforts encourage students to engage in equitable and societally benefcial engineering practices (the purpose of E4SJ), but also to ensure that the technical advances we present at conferences like HRI promise true advances to society, and not just to fellow researchers and engineers.

Advances in blockchain technologies enable society toward trust-based applications. Smart contracts are the scripts holding the properties to perform the activities in Blockchain. Smart contracts are prepared between the parties to hold their requirements and promises. If the deal held by a smart contract is huge and expensive, then there is a high chance of attracting issues and loss of assets. this necessitates the verification and testing of a smart contract. In this paper, we demonstrate an approach for generating test cases to satisfy the condition coverage of smart contracts using a solidity-bounded model checker. We show the annotation of the original smart contract as per the condition coverage specification and drive the bounded model checker to prove the feasibility of the asserted properties. Finally, we collect all feasible targets and show the condition coverage score. Also, the proposed approach generates test input values for each feasible atomic condition. the approach presented has been tested with 70 smart contracts, resulting in 57.14% of contracts with good condition coverage scores. Our work can be utilized to certify any smart contract to check whether the Optimal or Maximal condition coverage is achieved or not. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.
