The huge progress of ICT is radically changing distributedsystems at their roots, modifying their operation and engineering practices and introducing new non-functional (e.g., security and safety) risks. These risks are amplified by the crucial role played by machine learning, on one side, and by the pervasive involvement of users in the system operation, on the other side. Certification techniques have been largely adopted to reduce the above risks, though the recent evolution of distributedsystems towards cloud-edge, IoT, 5G, and machine learning severely hindered certification diffusion and quality. The need of new certification techniques that prove compliance of distributedsystems against non-functional requirements arises and is often pushed by strict laws and regulations. In this paper, we envision a research manifesto for non-functional certification of modern distributedsystems that paves the way for the wide adoption of certification in the real world, also in those domains where certification is not mandatory. Its ultimate goal is to lead to a trustworthy and adaptive ecosystem based on a cost-effective, non-functional certification, where modern system development, assessment, and management are not only ruled by functional requirements. The manifesto discusses the research challenges, a roadmap built on 6 research directions, and a concrete implementation timeline for the roadmap.

The roulette wheel selection is a critical process in heuristic algorithms, enabling the probabilistic choice of items based on assigned fitness values. It selects an item with a probability proportional to its fitness value. This technique is commonly employed in ant-colony algorithms to randomly determine the next city to visit when solving the traveling salesman problem. Our study focuses on parallel algorithms designed to select one of multiple processors, each associated with fitness values, using random wheel selection. We propose a novel approach called logarithmic random bidding, which achieves an expected runtime logarithmic to the number of processors with non-zero fitness values, using the CRCW-PRAM model with a shared memory of constant size. Notably, the logarithmic random bidding technique demonstrates efficient performance, particularly in scenarios where only a few processors are assigned non-zero fitness values.

Renewable energy sources are increasing their importance and presence in the energy production sector due to their null or almost null greenhouse gas emissions. However, the main disadvantage of this type of system is the dependence on weather conditions. This research proposes using a virtual sensor to measure the wind speed 10m above ground through variables measured at ground level. The modeling process followed a feature selection step before applying four machine learning techniques. The implemented virtual sensor accurately estimated the wind speed at 10 m, an interesting tool to eliminate the physical sensor's buy, installation, and maintenance.
