Cloud computing, the fastest-growing IT technology, offers flexibility and scalability with pay-per-use models, but it raises concerns about data security due to third-party storage and online accessibility. Effective cloud security measures are crucial for protecting user data. The Internet of Things (IoT) generates enormous amounts of data that must be efficiently processed and stored in the cloud. Blockchain technology enhances data security through its tamper-resistant distributed ledger and peer-to-peer networks, which allow any node with internet access to join or create networks. To protect sensitive data and maintain its integrity, it is crucial to implement robust encryption, privacy safeguards, access controls, identity management and confidentiality in both cloud and decentralized systems. © 2024 ieee.

PDC at UM, is a series of "codeless" modules consisting of visualizations, simulations, and demonstrations which introduce Parallel and distributed computing (PDC) concepts in early computing courses. These materials are codeless because they do not require students to write or understand code. Instead, students read a short introduction to a PDC concept and Then engage with a web-based visualization and/or (code-based) demonstration reinforcing the concept. The codeless nature of these modules makes them suitable for computing and non computing majors. To test the effectiveness of our modules we introduced them into two CSI courses and designed and administered a pre/posttest. Our results show statistically significant results: those who engaged with our modules substantially improved their knowledge and understanding of PDC concepts. Our modules also improved student attitudes, confidence and self-efficacy with respect to PDC topics. We also provide some qualitative observations of our study and identify common misconceptions students have about PDC.

User attachment forecasting with Deep Learning (DL) is an effective tool for proactive mobility management in dense Beyond 5G (B5G)/6G deployments with reduced cell sizes. However, collecting user data in a central cloud to facilitate DL model learning causes extensive overhead and privacy concerns. distributed edge cloud-based federated learning solves these issues, but it faces challenges in handling out-of-distribution data from decentralized edges at the network periphery, and the model biases due to data heterogeneity. This paper addresses these limitations by proposing a fully distributed Collaborative User Mobility Prediction (CUMP) framework that mitigates the out-of-distribution data issue through collaboration among initial layers of DL models in edges that are selected using inter-edge mobility rates. The remaining part of each model only trains on local data, preserving biases towards their respective edges. This enhances the generalization, robustness, and predictive performance of the DL models. Results show that CUMP outperforms conventional global learning and state-of-the-art distributed personalized federated learning and cyclic incremental institutional learning by 63%, 12%, and 10% in predicting the next Point of Attachment (PoA) of a user and by 70%, 22%, and 28% in predicting user dwell time in current PoA, respectively. Thus, CUMP improves prediction performance while reducing network and storage overheads while preserving privacy.

Using renewable energy sources (RESs) such as solar and wind generation systems poses a challenge in supplying safe and stable power to the power grid due to output power variability. Therefore, the problem of output power variability requires the advanced development of essential technologies and methodologies that will minimize the power variability problems and permit the existing power grid to integrate a high penetration of renewable energy. One strategy to accommodate the power variability of RESs is adding an energy storage system (ESS) to improve the power supply's reliability and stability. To take advantage of the combined benefits of using RESs and ESSs, this paper proposes an optimal storage capacity sizing problem while considering the safe operation against output power variability. To do this, the linear programming mathematical model explores the relationship between storage capacity and safety conditions. The safety-based optimization problem is formulated using LP Solver in Matlab. The actual experiment data of iHouse (smart apartment) is employed for the spring season to validate storage capacity sizing. Finally, a couple of case studies are designed and analyzed for the optimal capacity sizing of energy storage to guarantee the safe operation of a power system with renewable sources.

It has been a decade since the ACM/ieee CS2013 Curriculum guidelines recommended that all CS students learn about parallel and distributed computing (PDC). But few textbooks for "core" CS courses especially first-year courses include coverage of PDC topics. To fill this gap, we have written free, online, beginner- and intermediate-level PDC textbooks, containing interactive C/C++ OpenMP, MPI, mpi4py, CUDA, and OpenACC code examples that students can run and modify directly in the browser. The books address a serious challenge to leaching PDC concepts, namely, easy access to the powerful hardware needed for observing patterns and scalability. This paper describes the content of these textbooks and the underlying infrastructure that make them possible. We believe the described textbooks fill a critical gap in PDC education and will be very useful for the community.

A Lightweight Three Dimensional Redeployment Algorithm for distributed Mobile Wireless sensor Networks

In recent years, there has been significant growth in mobile wireless sensor networks (WSNs), yet prevailing research has primarily focused on 2D planar deployments, overlooking the importance of three-dimensional (3D) coverage in various applications. This oversight leads to ineffective data gathering due to incomplete area coverage and network connectivity. In previous researches (Boufares et al. in: 2018 31 ieee/ACS 15th international conference on computer systems and applications (AICCSA), Aqaba, Jordan, pp 1-8, 2018, in: 13th international wireless communications and mobile computing conference (IWCMC), Valencia, pp 1628-1633, 2017, in: ieee wireless communications and mobile computing conference (IWCMC), Dubrovnik, Croatia, pp 563-568, 2015a, in: the 4th international conference on performance evaluation and modeling in wired and wireless networks (PEMWN), Hammamet, Tunisia, pp 103-108, 2015b), we proposed 3D mobile autonomous redeployment strategies based on the Virtual Forces Algorithm, tailored for diverse configurations: 3D volume applications such as smart homes or agriculture, 3D flat surfaces like snow monitoring, and 3D terrain surfaces like volcano monitoring. Our approach ensured complete coverage and connectivity in these scenarios. Moreover, energy efficiency emerges as a critical concern, given the autonomous and mobile nature of sensor nodes operating on finite battery power. Hence, in this paper, we provide an overview of our previous results, highlighting the efficacy of our 3D mobile autonomous redeployment strategies across various configurations. The purpose of this research is to compare, in the environment of a clever logistics park, the effectiveness of fog-enabled sensor clouds (FSC) with traditional cloud computing with fog computing models. Expanding on our earlier work, we describe the physical instrument virtualization framework and scheme that are essential to the envisioned FSC. There is a careful construction of the network model and a mathematical explanation of the FSC parameters. We use a well-known logistics company in China is a case study to assess the efficacy of the suggested platform and clarify the network architecture in a real-world logistics situation. The experiment's results confirm that, with regard to bandwidth usage and service delay, the FSC for logistics parks is demonstrably superior to standard internet-based and fog computing models. © 2024 ieee.

sensor deployment, and in particular coverage, is a fundamental component in the design and development of wireless sensor networks. Achieving coverage (or 1-coverage) in three-dimensional (or spatial) wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which requires that every point in a spatial field of interest (FoI), is an open challenging problem. In particular, the problem of k-coverage in spatial WSNs, where every point in a spatial FoI is k-covered (or covered by at least k sensors at the same time), is even more challenging. In this paper, we investigate the problem of connected k-coverage in spatial WSNs, where a spatial FoI is k-covered while all the sensors participating in this k-coverage process are connected to each other. Our study aims at producing an energy-efficient and optimized protocol, which helps achieve connected k-coverage in spatial WSNs with a minimum number of sensors, thus, extending the network lifespan. Precisely, this study is based on convex polyhedral space fillers that help establish an irregular hexagonal prism tessellation referred to as Irregular Honeycomb Network (IHN), which serves as a medium to achieve k-coverage in spatial WSNs. First, we propose a randomly distributed sensor placement strategy, which is designed to guarantee full k-coverage of a spatial FoI. To this end, we tile a spatial FoI with irregular hexagonal prisms, known as space fillers, which are adjacent to each other without any gaps or overlaps. Second, we exploit this tiling strategy to guarantee k-coverage of a spatial FoI. Then, we compute the spatial sensor density (i.e., number of sensors per unit volume) to k-cover a spatial FoI. Third, we determine the necessary relationship between the sensors' communication and sensing ranges to ensure network connectivity. We corroborate our analysis with various simulation results.

Sharing and joint processing of camera feeds and sensor measurements, known as Cooperative Perception (CP), has emerged as a new technique to achieve higher perception qualities. CP can enhance the safety of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) where their individual visual perception quality is compromised by adverse weather conditions (haze as foggy weather), low illumination, winding roads, and crowded traffic. While previous CP methods have shown success in elevating perception quality, they often assume perfect communication conditions and unlimited transmission resources to share camera feeds, which may not hold in real-world scenarios. Also, they make no effort to select better helpers when multiple options are available. To cover the limitations of former methods, in this paper, we propose a novel approach to realize an optimized CP under constrained communications. At the core of our approach is recruiting the best helper from the available list of front vehicles to augment the visual range and enhance the Object Detection (OD) accuracy of the ego vehicle. In this two-step process, we first select the helper vehicles that contribute the most to CP based on their visual range and lowest motion blur. Next, we implement a radio block optimization among the candidate vehicles to further improve communication efficiency. We specifically focus on pedestrian detection as an exemplary scenario. To validate our approach, we used the CARLA simulator to create a dataset of annotated videos for different driving scenarios where pedestrian detection is challenging for an AV with compromised vision. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of our two-step optimization process in improving the overall performance of cooperative perception in challenging scenarios, substantially improving driving safety under adverse conditions.
