In this paper we address the issues of forming secure multicast group within wireless sensor networks. We describe a protocol that establishes a secure multicast group, and distributes a group key by mutually authenticating a group of devices over an open insecure wireless channel. We choose a conference keying mechanism and extend it with symmetric authentication protocols and a key hierarchy on which group key could be distributed efficiently. We address two problems in this work. Firstly, the formation of secure groups in sensor network with a low communication complexity, secondly, provides an efficient solution to maintain such multicast group.

In this paper, we study distributed approximation algorithms for fault-tolerant clustering in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. A k-fold dominating set of a graph G = (V,E) is a subset S of V such that every node v \in V \ S has at least k neighbors in S. We study the problem in two network models. In general graphs, for arbitrary parameter t, we propose a distributed algorithm that runs in time O(t^2) and achieves an approximation ratio of O(t\delta^2/t log\delta), where n and \delta denote the number of nodes in the network and the maximal degree, respectively. When the network is modeled as a unit disk graph, we give a probabilistic algorithm that runs in time O(log log n) and achieves an O(1) approximation in expectation. Both algorithms require only small messages of size O(log n) bits.

The location awareness system is an essential factor for the development of low cost sensor networks for use in the smart home environments and ubiquitous networking. This paper addresses the problem of tracking a moving intelligent robot using the pharos indoor location system. Our motivating applications include intelligent robot navigation, where location sensors provide position information to a moving robot. All of these applications require the position of a device moving at human speeds to be tracked. Ubiquitous indoor environments often contain substantial amounts of metal and other such reflective materials that affect the propagation of radio frequency signals in non-trivial ways, causing severe multi-path effects, dead-spots, noise, and interference. In this paper, we address the location error detection and correcting problems of the sensor network platform with RF and ultrasonic for location tracking system. Especially we present a novel detecting error of location and correcting using LQI that is particularly well suited to support context-aware smart home computing. It is achieved by considering the speed variance of the moving object and the corrected the interference errors. This proposed scheme applied the method of an error correct to the mobile object. We brought a 5% efficiencies comparing with a three existing schemes (listener inference algorithm). And The system called Pharos, aims to combine the advantages of real-time tracking systems that implement distributed environment with regardless of infrastructure or infrastructure-less wireless sensor networks. © 2006 ieee.

Service supported by an object is modeled to be a set of methods and quality of service(QoS). In addition to finding a peer which holds a target object, it is critical to discuss what peer is allowed to manipulate the target object in what method. In this paper, we take an acquaintance approach to finding and manipulating objects in P2P overlay networks. An acquaintance peer of a peer p is apeerwhose service the peer p know and with which the peer p can directly communicate. If an access request is issued, a peer has to find where a target object exists, how to obtain an access right on the target object, and how to manipulate the target object. In this paper, we discuss ways to obtain results which satisfying an access requests by the cooperation of acquaintances. Acquaintance peers of a peer p may knows different information on target peers since it takes time to propagate change information of the target peers and peers may be faulty. Here, it is critical to discuss how much a peer can trust each acquaintance. We define the trustworthiness of an acquaintance peer in terms of the acquaintance relations among the peers. © 2006 ieee.

With the proliferation of wireless communication and sensor technology, the importance of location-based applications has tremendously increased. In order to support these applications, services that implement algorithms for the efficient processing of spatial queries, such as range and k-nearest neighbor queries, are definitely beneficial. In this paper, we propose definitions of probabilistic range and k-nearest neighbor query semantics that take into account the inaccurate position information acquired from positioning systems. We introduce efficient algorithms for distributed storage of the dynamic information captured by positioning sensors on mobile network nodes, and for processing the aforementioned queries in mobile ad hoc networks. We show by evaluation that the studied algorithms incur small communication costs, and that the query algorithms return accurate results in a timely manner

In this paper, we propose a novel Geographic Multicast routing Protocol (GMP) for wireless sensor networks1. The proposed protocol is fully distributed and stateless. Given a set of the destinations, the transmitting node first constructs a virtual Euclidean steiner tree rooted at itself and including the destinations, using a novel and highly efficient reduction ratio heuristic (called rrstR). Based on this locally computed tree and the information regarding the locations of its immediate neighbors, the transmitting node then splits the destinations into a set of groups and calculates a next hop for each of these groups. A copy of the packet and the locations of the corresponding group of destination nodes are directed towards the corresponding hop. The simulation results on NS2 show that the average per-destination hop count obtained using GMP is comparable to the existing PBM [21] algorithm and significantly less than obtained by using LGS [5]. Most significantly, GMP requires 25% less hops and energy than alternative algorithms.

In ieee 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN), it is very hard to meet QoS requirements (throughput, delay and loss rate) of multimedia traffic by using distributed coordination function (DCF). In order to support QoS in WLAN, enhanced ieee 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol is discussed in ieee 802.11 Task Group E. ieee 802.11e uses the rather complex hybrid coordination function (HCF). In this paper, we propose a simple multipolling DCF (MPDCF) mechanism with the advantages of high channel efficiency and QoS support. In our proposed mechanism, an AP can decide the transmission order and duration of QoS-sensitive wireless stations and poll the stations whenever it needs based on the controlled backoff procedure. We propose a scheduling algorithm using the proposed MPDCF to serve real-time traffic with constant and variable bit rates. The simulation results show that QoS requirements of the traffic can be satisfied and the channel utilization is also increased with our scheduling mechanism

Desktop grid (DG) systems use the idle computing power of many volunteered desktop PC's on the Internet to support large-scale computation and storage. For over a decade, DG systems have been the largest and the most powerful distributed computing systems, offering a plethora of computing power at a fraction of the cost of supercomputers. The volunteer desktops participating in DG projects are volatile and heterogeneous, but there is little detailed information about their volatility and heterogeneity. Yet this characterization is essential for the simulation and modelling of such systems. We are conducting a project whose goal is to obtain a detailed picture of the DG landscape. To this end, we are deploying resource sensors on the volunteer desktops to measure the availability of CPU, disk space, memory, and network bandwidth. An initial version of the project has been deployed and currently has about 1,800 participating hosts. The resulting resource measurement data and characterization will be useful for a broad range of research areas, including distributed and peer-to-peer computing, and fault tolerance

Topic maps offer a powerful foundation for knowledge representation and the implementation of knowledge management applications. Using ontologies to model knowledge structures, they offer concepts to link these knowledge structures with unstructured data stored in files, external documents etc. This paper presents the architecture and prototypical implementation of a topic map application infrastructure (called "topic grid" in the following) allowing transparent access to different topic maps distributed in a network. To a client of the topic grid, it appears as if access to a single virtual topic map is provided. The topic grid architecture is designed as a multi-protocol layered model in order to enhance its reusability

Autonomous robot systems have to manage their energy wisely in order to complete their missions. Typical approaches seek to conserve energy by energy-efficient motion or sensor planning. This paper puts forth a distributed systems approach to power management. Specifically, it develops and presents AutoPower, which is a model that characterizes robot software systems' computation and communication energy behaviors. With AutoPower, it is possible to make principled decisions about (1) where to deploy software components across the distributed computing resources of autonomous robotic systems, and (2) how the different systems involved should communicate to best meet overall mission objectives. We showcase AutoPower by using a multi-robot search-and-rescue mission as a guiding application. For this scenario, application of the model shows that there are counter-intuitive energy trade-offs in configuring such application software. Further, by using AutoPower to guide deployment and interconnects at runtime, for certain configurations, overall computing system lifetimes can be increased by up to 57% over a base-line configuration
