We propose a framework for the deployment and subsequent autonomic management of component based distributed applications. An initial deployment goal is specified using a declarative constraint language, expressing constraints over aspects such as component-host mappings and component interconnection topology. A constraint solver is used to find a configuration that satisfies the goal, and the configuration is deployed automatically. The deployed application is instrumented to allow subsequent autonomic management. If during execution, the manager detects that the original goal is no longer being met, the satisfy/deploy process can be repeated automatically in order to generate a revised deployment that does meet the goal.

Sequential consistency is a consistency criterion for concurrent objects stating that the execution of a multiprocess program is correct if it could have been produced by executing the program on a mono-processor system, preserving the order of the operations of each individual process. Several protocols implementing sequential consistency on top of asynchronous distributedsystems have been proposed. They assume that the processes access the shared objects through basic read and write operations. This paper considers the case where the processes can invoke multi-object operations which can read or write several objects in a single operation atomically. It proposes a particularly simple protocol that guarantees sequentially consistent executions in such a context. The previous sequential consistency protocols, in addition to considering only unary operations, assume either full replication or a central manager storing copies of all the objects. In contrast, the proposed protocol has the noteworthy feature that each object has a separate manager Interestingly, this provides the protocol with a versatility dimension that allows deriving simple protocols providing sequential consistency or atomic consistency when each operation is on a single object.

Localization (a.k.a. locationing) is a central concern for ubiquitous self-configuring sensor networks. In this paper the implementation of a distributed, least-squares-based localization algorithm is presented. Low power and energy dissipation are key requirements for sensor networks. As part of the sensor network, the localization system must also conform to these requirements. An ultra-low-power and dedicated hardware implementation of the localization system is therefore presented. The cost of fixed-point implementation is also investigated. The design is implemented in a 0.13/μ CMOS process. It dissipates I.7mW of active power and 0.122J/op of active energy with a silicon area of 0.55mm2. The mean calculated location error due to fixed-point implementation is shown to be 6%.

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology of Japan completed a real-life testbed, called the "ubiquitous home," for home context-aware service experiments in 2004. From the viewpoint of sensor ubiquity, the Ubiquitous Home is superior to other similar testbeds. At the Ubiquitous Home, experimenters can collect real-life data as if living in their own house, not in a laboratory. This paper introduces an overview and detailed sensor arrangement of the Ubiquitous Home. Two cases from several progressing experiments are also presented. The first case is on connecting networked appliances;the second concerns the combination of wearable devices and the Ubiquitous Home sensors to record user behavior

An approach to address the dependency management issues in Solar, a flexible software infrastructure, is discussed. Solar consists of a set of functionally equivalent nodes, named planets, which peer together to form a service overlay. The method requires each component to explicitly register a recovery configuration and all dependencies. It is stated that each planet (P) has a peer monitoring planet (PM) which is responsible to initiate recovery and the detection of failure of the planet. The components depending on the planet are tracked and the associated policies are implemented when those components fail.

sensor networks have increasingly become the subject of intense scientific interest over the past few years. In this work we focus on detecting intrusions in sensor networks. The intrusion detection community has been focusing mainly on wired networks. But techniques geared towards wireline networks would not suffice for a sensor environment because of the constraints associated with such networks. In this paper we consider arbitrary sized sensor networks and propose algorithms to improve the detection rates by intelligently enabling the intrusion detection functionality on particular sensor nodes. The proposed algorithms, based on the concepts of minimum cut-set and minimum dominating set, allow for a distributed implementation. The performance of the algorithms in identifying intrusions using signature based detection techniques is studied via simulations.

Increasingly, artists employ distributed multimedia in live performance, themed entertainment, and media art. One barrier they encounter is the interconnection Of physically distributedsensors and computational units for the control of media elements. To address this need, UCLA's HyperMedia studio created Kolo, a Java-based framework for the collection of sensor data and the control of distributed, media devices, and Nebesko, a scripting language for managing a Kolo network's state. Kolo presents developers and application authors with a simple and consistent control framework for their distributed applications while Nebesko provides distributedstate management for manipulation of the network. Nebesko also enables non-programmer to create and use Kolo networks. This paper discusses motivations for a distributed multimedia control framework for the arts, the qualities necessary for its success, the arts as an application domain for distributed Multimedia research, and Kolo and Nebesko's implementation.

Two important objectives in processing a continuous monitoring queries (CMQ) are: (1) to minimize the processing overheads, especially in communication and query evaluation;and (2) to provide temporally consistent sensor data for query evaluation. The first one is important to normal operations of sensor devices while the second one is to ensure the correctness of the query results. We propose periodic pushing schemes, called PerPush and ConPush, to aggregate the sub-query results of a CMQ. To further improve the performance, we propose the Sequential Pushing (SeqPush) scheme for aggregating the sensor data values generated by the sensor nodes which are close to each other, The pushing path in SeqPush follows a sequential pattern according to the semantic of the queries and the results of evaluation of the sub-queries at the nodes participating in the CMQ.
