Mobile computing is gaining wide acceptance due to the rapid enhancement in wireless communications technologies. This has led to an increase in the demand for mobile information access. However most mobile completing environment are very limited in resources, hence introducing new requirements and challenges for the software developer and engineer To address these challenges applications has to be adaptive. In this paper, we describe mobile computing and its constraints. We describe adaptation spaces as a common framework for understanding the state-of-the-art in adaptive applications. A number of projects are reviewed and discussed. Then, a new rising paradigm in building adaptive applications is introduced based on component-based architecture. We believe this new approach will provide more flexible environment for building mobile applications.

A web crawling system employing a parallel and distributed architecture needs to have a mechanism to bring the whole system in a coordinated state when the nodes are added to or removed from the system. This paper presents an efficient dynamic reconfiguration model that can be used in such a system. The study shows that this model leads to some nice properties, such as load balance and low traffic in the system, which contribute to high performance. Currently this model is being implemented in WebGather, a well-known Chinese and English web search engine.

This paper presents a Java-based distributedcomputing model for deploying networking system. The proposed model can rais e the level of abstraction for network or distributed system programming, from network protocol level to the object interface level, it provides a mechanism to enable smooth adding, removal, and finding of software components and services on the network. The software components providers use this distributed model to advertise complex descriptions of available or already running services, while clients use the model to compose complex queries for locating these software components. The provider of software components or services needs not agree on network level protocols that allow their software components to interact. In this paper, the framework of the proposed model is described, and the processes for implementing the model are given, which can consists of three processes. The availability and efficiency of the model have been verified by illustrating an example. Finally, some remarks and conclusions are given.

This paper proposes a new minimum spanning tree (Mst) based distributed QoS-based multicast routing algorithm which is capable of constructing a delay constrained multicast tree when node failures occur during the tree construction period and recovering from any node failure in a multicast tree during the on-going multicast session without interrupting the running traffic on the unaffected portion of the tree. The proposed algorithm performs the failure recovery efficiently, which gives better performance in terms of the number of exchanged messages and the convergence time than the existing Mst based distributed multicast routing algorithms.

This paper presents an environment for developing distributed applications. It consists basically of adding to Java language a library to manipulate shared objects, according to a methodology of distributed shared memory - DSM without cache. Shared objects are instances of classes that are data structures (lists, queues and stacks of objects). The environment provides a mechanism of hybrid load balancing among computers and tolerance to fault. The proposed environment has been tested and the results have showed that machines of low cost can be of high performance.

E-Commerce systems are specialized instances of distributed processing systems. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) provides a sophisticated infrastructure to develop and deploy distributed objects. As systems become more complex and geographically distributed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to conduct cost-effective, systematic, and comprehensive testing on such systems. Using CORBA to facilitate the development and testing of E-commerce systems can greatly improve testability and directly shorten the time-to-market cycle by decreasing test effort. This paper proposes a practical CORBA-based E-commerce Development and Testing Approach (CDATA) which supports both functional and performance testing of multiple distributed CUTs (Components Under Test). The approach is illustrated by the implementation of an experimental E-commerce system and the corresponding testing architecture.

There are a lot of papers concerning of the performance of Assured Forwarding (AF) service in a single Differentiated Services domain network. However, few works have dealt with the performance evaluation of architectures that are based on interconnected AF service domains. This paper presents a simulation-based performance study of the AF service in a multi-DS domain network architecture. This was motivated by the fact that in real world, communication systems are often composed of many inter-connected domains. We also give a comparison on the performance of AF service in single- versus and multi-DS domain networks.

In this paper, we present a hierarchical, scalable and dynamic management scheme for managing large-scale distributed networks. The proposed hierarchical architecture achieves scalability by modifying the number of components according to the size of network. The hierarchical approach can efficiently distribute the loads and improve the reliability of the system. In order to increase flexibility, the system employs a policy-based dynamic subscription approach that enables users to manipulate management tasks at run-time. The event-triggered management mechanism enables the managers to discover and solve the problem of network in time. Moreover, the system can trigger or disable management rules automatically according to some network events. This significantly improves autonomy of the system.
