To cope with recent intensively competitive industrial situations, a smart distributed estimation system for elevator renewal for use on a mobile computer was developed. This system comprises mobile computers and wrap servers. The former includes goal-centered knowledge for complex business-operation, and the latter includes knowledge for system-linkage. Utilizing such knowledge, this system can exploit various divisions' knowledge existing in conventional systems without changing software. Experimental results show that this system enabled even an inexperienced sales engineer to estimate effectively and promptly from a mobile or remote computer outside the office. This system can be generally used for estimation is situations of changing knowledge for business-operations.

A new method of physical activity monitoring is presented, which is able to detect body postures (sitting, standing and lying) and walking period in the elderly from only one kinematic sensor attached to the chest. Wavelet analysis in conjunction with a simple kinematics model was used to recognize different postural transitions and walking periods during daily physical activity. The method was tested on 11 elderly subjects (all community walkers) in a gait laboratory where an optical motion system (Vicon) was used as reference. A close correspondence was found between the two systems. The efficiency of the system for ambulatory monitoring outside of the laboratory was tested on 3 old subjects. High sensitivity (>90%) was obtained for the classification of usual physical activities.

Reports the concept and first results of a hybrid integrated telemetric pressure measuring system for continuous monitoring of the intra-ocular pressure. The system is designed for glaucoma differential diagnosis and follow up. The measuring system is highly miniaturized using advanced flip-chip mounting technology to fulfil the spatial requirements of integration into the fringe of an intra-ocular lens without the necessity of a monolithically integrated sensor. The surface micro-machined pressure sensor is used in an integrated hybrid circuit comprising the sensor itself and a dedicated read-out circuit in standard CMOS technology. First experimental results of the system are presented. The concept of the telemetric data transmission, mounting and assembly, the coating and EMC problem is discussed briefly.

Microtechnologies offer the new possibility of designing and building sensors and actuators in dimensional scale close to that of living tissues or even to single cells. The world of microtechnology between micrometers (or less) and millimeters, is governed by laws which differ from those valid for human size. Superficial tension, boundary layers, electrostatic effects, surface state, diffusion capillary forces... are preponderant for this size, whereas they are weak or negligible at macroscopic scale. Living tissues have been using "micro" and "nano" technologies for several hundred million years. They are models for the design of sensors, actuators, structures, organizations and concepts. One has to study this field, keeping in mind that nature does not give one "blue prints" "ready to copy".

Using micromachine technology, we have developed the first prototype of a multiple distributed micromachine system, in which a micromachine can be driven in both the horizontal and vertical directions and automatically connect to and disconnect from adjacent micromachines. The developed micromachine is the world's smallest machine (width: 9 mm, length: 5 mm, height: 6.5 mm, weight: 0.42 g) that can travel in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This paper gives an overview of the prototype and its travel and connection/disconnection performance. The following conclusions were obtained: (1) The developed magnetic wheel-driven micromachine is able to travel both horizontally and vertically. (2) Automatic connection and disconnection are realized by using newly developed microconnectors.

In this work, the authors present a statistical analysis applied to different sensors on the driver's impairment detection problem. Their goal is to get a minimal number of discriminating sensors to match the requirements of an industrial prototype. The signals coming from these group of sensors are used to create artificial variables based on several mathematical transformations (wavelets, standard deviations) in order to fuse this information at a first level. The authors' statistical study is based on several steps: 1) the observation of the variation of the mean and variance of the different variables, 2) the test of Hypothesis F concerning a population's variance and then, an hypotheses test based on student's t distribution for the means, 3) principal components analysis (PCA); and 4) general performance of the diagnosis system using or not the different variables. This study has been performed using experimental data coming from 10 drivers in real experiments involving fatigued drivers at a closed circuit and over a motorway. These experiments have been realised using the CopiTech demonstrator which is equipped with a group of sensors measuring physiologic, mechanical and environmental status in real time. The analysis is validated by the physical state of the driver based on EEG. Results stress that the better discriminating sensors are: a) lateral position, b) steering wheel angle, and c) vehicle speed.

This paper reports on an experiment in which the pre-existing engineering systems for FMS re-engineering were integrated using an open framework of cooperating agents - DESO. To reflect the standards of communication in a distributed heterogeneous system, a multi-level model and an agent template, based on this model are proposed. Agents and software components coordinate their activities using FMS shared ontology, commitment rules, agent communication and control language (currently, restricted version of KQML) and DCOM/ActiveX interaction mechanisms. The results of experiments and future work on the system development are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A noninvasive technique has been developed to acquire distributed cardiac electrical activity by measuring the surface Laplacian ECG of the heart. The goal is to design an active sensor array that can be attached to the human thorax with uniform pressure. The final design consists of an array of 30 active concentric ring sensors and a lead II ECG. It must have good contact with the chest surface for the acquisition of the Laplacian ECG signal and at the same time be user friendly.

The next generation of telecare systems will need to monitor and process vast amounts of personal data. These data might include both medical and lifestyle (or behavioral) information which may be highly sensitive. There is general unease with the concept of such data streaming out of the home on a regular basis without the knowledge of the client. The CarerNet model is being developed with a distributed intelligence approach which can be used to manage and control the flow of personal data. By establishing a hierarchical layering of information zones based on intelligent nodes within the home, and by agreeing with the client a set of circumstances which warrant external intervention, it is possible to filter the flow of sensitive information between such zones. This reduces the intrusion while minimizing the quantity of data and the errors transmitted throughout the system.
