A systematic method of mapping algorithms from single assignment algorithms into systolic arrays is presented. The method is based on a space-time mapping technique of the index sets. We present a method of generation and selection of a valid transform dependency matrix that will yield an optimal or near optimal systolic array once it is mapped. The proposed method increases the visibility of the architecture in terms of processor delay and communication between processors at the algorithmic level, so that the designer is able to select a desired array at early stages of the design. An example of the proposed method is given.< >

A limited-area numeric weather prediction model specifically targeted for parallel computers has been successfully implemented an an IBM SP2 distributed-memory parallel computer. The model employs an explicit finite-difference scheme and was parallelised using a simple domain decomposition technique. On a twelve processor SP2, a 24 hour forecast using archived operational data and including a sophisticated representation of physical processes was run at a range of resolutions between 150 km and 19 km and near-linear speedups were achieved. Major weather centres have indicated a requirement for regional prediction models to be run at resolutions of approximately 5 km by the end of the decade. Based on this work, it appears that this target can be achieved through the use of scalable parallel computers.< >

We discuss the results of a feasibility study of an opto-electronic shared memory with concurrent read, concurrent write capability. Unlike previous such work we consider a true hardware shared memory rather then a simulation on a tightly, optically connected distributed memory computer. We describe a design that could be implemented using compact integrated semiconductor modules and propose ways to solve two major problems faced by such a device: optical system complexity and parallel word level write consistency. It is shown that, in principle, a memory with GBytes capacity and a latency of less then 1 ns, accessed by up to 10/sup 5/ processors could be feasible. Using devices currently available as laboratory prototypes and taking into account energy and crosstalk considerations a capacity of more then 1 MB and a latency of about 50 ns might be attained for up to 1000 processors.< >

DCT/IDCT bared source coding and decoding techniques are widely accepted in HDTV systems and other MPEG based applications. In this paper, we propose a new direct 2-D IDCT algorithm bared on the parallel divide-and-conquer approach. The algorithm distributes computation by considering one transformed coefficient at a time and doing partial computation and updating as every coefficient arrives. A novel parallel and fully pipelined architecture with an effective processing time of one cycle per pixel for an N/spl times/N size block is designed to implement the algorithm. An unique feature of this architecture is that it integrates inverse-shuffling, inverse-quantization, inverse-source-coding, and motion-compensation into a single compact data-path. We avoid the insertion of a FIFO between the bit-stream decoder and decompression engine. The entire block of pixel values are sampled in a single cycle for post-processing after de-compression. Also, we use only (N/2(N/2+1))/2 multipliers and N/sup 2/ adders.< >

Multistage interconnection networks are used in a number of application areas such as parallel computers and high-speed communication systems. As the performance of these systems lies on an efficient design of the interconnection network, a thorough analysis of the network's performance is important. Mathematical analysis so far provides inadequate results and simulation analysis using a uniprocessor usually requires extremely long run time to evaluate large networks. This paper addresses the use of parallel simulation techniques to speedup the simulation of multistage interconnection networks. The conventional null-message approach for resolving deadlock problem in conservative simulation may cause livelock if lookahead is not guaranteed. We propose a deadlock/livelock free scheme using null messages, but without the guaranteed lookahead, to coordinate the simulation, and different partitioning techniques for mapping of the simulation program onto multicomputers. A flushing mechanism is also used to resolve the null-message explosion problem. Our analysis shows that the proposed flushing mechanism effectively reduces the number of null messages from exponential to linear.< >

A novel optical proximity sensor system, HexEYE, capable of measuring the distance to, the orientation of, and the curvature at a local area of object surface has been designed and evaluated for robotic application. This paper presents: 1) the implementation of distance mapping from raw data based on a multilayer backpropagation neural network; 2) the hardware and software implementation of a single sensing unit; and 3) the experimental evaluation under various surface conditions. A prototype of a single sensing unit has been built with commercially available parts.

The computation of a one-dimensional FFT on a c-dimensional torus multicomputer is analyzed. Different approaches are proposed which differ in the way they use the interconnection network. The first approach is based on the multidimensional index mapping technique for the FFT computation. The second approach starts from a hypercube algorithm and then embeds the hypercube onto the torus. The third approach reduces the communication cost of the hypercube algorithm by pipelining the communication operations. A novel methodology to pipeline the communication operations on a torus is proposed. Analytical models are presented to compare the different approaches. This comparison study shows that the best approach depends on the number of dimensions of the torus and the communication start-up and transfer times. The analytical models allow us to select the most efficient approach for the available machine.< >

Conformance testing of communication protocols has recently become a major issue in the context of OSI-based standardization of protocols. The aim of conformance testing is to assure that a protocol fulfils an OSI specification. A performance study is presented for a distributed protocol test system that has been installed for conformance testing of the ISDN D-channel signalling protocol. Using a general approach for performance measurements and evaluation in distributed systems, a queueing model is developed and evaluated, based on runtimes as obtained from measurements of the test system. It is demonstrated that significant performance improvements can be achieved once the process scheduling strategy at the ISDN protocol testers is properly adjusted.< >

Image matching based on image feature pixels involves heavily iterated computation and repeated memory access. In our previous work the detection of interesting points has been reported as an efficient pre-processing step to extract binary images for further matching in terms of certain distance measurement. This paper presents our extension to a parallel implementation of the matching scheme for object recognition on a low cost heterogeneous PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) network. While most of the sequential execution time is spent on image feature extraction, distance transform and matching measurement, our investigation shows that a distributed memory multicomputer can best meet the high computational and memory access demands in image processing. The performance is evaluated in terms of execution time. We conclude that parallel image processing con be implemented on a general distributed system to achieve the speedup without specific hardware requirement.< >

A one-shot semi-join reduction approach was recently proposed to execute all semi-joins on the same relation simultaneously such that the relation only needs to be scanned once. The one-shot semi-join reduction approach was applied to reducing distributed query response time under the assumption that one copy of each referenced relation has been chosen prior to the production of an execution plan. The estimations of both semi-join reduction effect and local join cost, employed in previous work, were restricted to a special case. In this paper, we extend the previous work in three ways: (1) remove the requirement for copy selection before the production of a semi-join reduction program, (2) allow the choice of redundant copies for the execution of semi-joins, (3) employ a general cost model which covers a large class of possible estimations of semi-join reduction effect and local join cost. Then, an algorithm to produce an optimal parallel one-shot semi-join reduction program for minimising response time shall be presented, addressing the above three aspects.< >
