Sparse matrix multiplication (SPMM) is widely used for various machine learning algorithms. With advancements in big-data processing, the importance of distributed SPMM processing becomes important for handling large-scale datasets. We conducted thorough experiments using various distributed SPMM implementations and discovered considerable performance variations for distinct datasets and scenarios. To provide an optimal SPMM execution environment, we propose features that represent SPMM task characteristics. Using these features, we propose building a tree-based non-linear gradient boosting (GB) regressor model that presents superb prediction accuracy across diverse distributed SPMM implementations and datasets.

Federated learning (FL) is a widely acknowledged distributed training paradigm that preserves the privacy of data on participating clients, and has become the de facto standard for distributed machine learning across a large number of edge devices. Conventional FL, however, has a rather rigid design, where the server is the dominant player that selects a subset of its clients to participate in each communication round, and clients are merely followers, and are not offered the freedom to accept or decline invitations from the server to participate. In addition, clients may become unavailable or very slow due to a wide variety of reasons, yet it may take an excessive amount of time for a conventional FL server to recognize that a particular client is unavailable. In this paper, we advocate for a more pragmatic paradigm in federated learning, called democratic federated learning, to offer more freedom to both servers and clients with respect to the ability to accept or decline requests, and to explicitly request to participate. In contrast to conventional federated learning, our paradigm allows (1) both the server and clients to participate and withdraw from the federated learning process at any time; (2) the server to decide whether to reject clients' updates based on the current model convergence steps, i.e., after satisfying the minimum required clients' updates received; and (3) the clients to adjust the local epochs based on their own training and communication time. Our experimental results on a variety of datasets and models have confirmed that democratic federated learning not only accelerates the convergence process but also improves the accuracy of converged models, and serves as a foundation for future explorations into client-centric models within the FL ecosystem.

The growth in the number of traffic accidents has become a cause for concern in urban centers. As a result of the increase in population in large cities and the number of vehicles, the consequences of accidents and congestion can be even more significant, considering the impacts on the economy, environment and people's quality of life. Therefore, aiming to minimize these impacts, we present ALIVE, a distributed and Vanet-based solution that reduces congestion caused by different sources and, especially, from accident sources, contributing to efficient urban mobility in smart cities. The solution performs the detection of accidents and the dissemination of warning messages in multiple hops. Besides, the system can share the road traffic information with the nearby streets to improve traffic efficiency. We evaluated the proposed solution with PANDORA and NRR Traffic Management solutions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed solution reduces the average travel time, time lost, and the number of transmitted messages.

Current research that use wireless charging for the energy replenishment of nodes in a network mostly considers charging of sensors from special mobile charging vehicles (MCV) and focuses on optimal path planning of these MCVs. However, it may not be practical to use such vehicles due to its operational cost and other restrictions. To this end, in this paper, we consider to utilize smartphones owned by people and let the low cost Internet of Things (IoT) devices harvest energy from the smartphones that pass by. We study the wireless crowd charging of such IoT devices from these smartphones in an opportunistic manner, without changing their actual trajectories. As each smartphone user will limitedly support such a crowd charging process, the selection of IoT devices that will be charged from each smartphone has to be determined based on the trajectories of smartphone users. To address that, we model the problem using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and decide the optimal charging relation between smartphones and IoT devices. Through simulations on both synthetic and real user traces, we show that MILP based solution offers a more successful crowd charging outcome with a better charging ratio than the greedy approach where the IoT devices can harvest maximum possible energy from all users encountered.

The MAC protocol ieee 802.15.4 DSME has features for WSNs to support exigent requirements such as high reliability and adaptability to dynamic traffic. This work introduces the concept of a virtual sink, which comprises the sink and its 1-hop neighbors, a.k.a. satellites, as the core of a strategy to alleviate the burden caused by the funneling effect in data collection scenarios. Our strategy enables the coexistence of a centralized scheduling algorithm at the virtual sink and a decentralized scheduling algorithm for the remaining nodes of the network. Through a simulative assessment, we compare the performance of the virtual sink-based strategy with the status quo of DSME via a decentralized slot scheduler TPS. Results show an improvement of the network throughput of up to 38% and a reduction of the energy consumption of about 30% at satellites.

Current techniques and systems for distributed model training mostly assume that clusters are comprised of homogeneous servers with a constant resource availability. However, cluster heterogeneity is pervasive in computing infrastructure, and is a fundamental characteristic of low-cost transient resources (such as EC2 spot instances). In this paper, we develop a dynamic batching technique for distributed data-parallel training that adjusts the mini-batch sizes on each worker based on its resource availability and throughput. Our mini-batch controller seeks to equalize iteration times on all workers, and facilitates training on clusters comprised of servers with different amounts of CPU and GPU resources. This variable mini-batch technique uses proportional control and ideas from PID controllers to find stable mini-batch sizes. Our empirical evaluation shows that dynamic batching can reduce model training times by more than 4x on heterogeneous clusters.

Wirelessly streaming high quality 360 degree videos is still a challenging problem. When there are many users watching different 360 degree videos and competing for the computing and communication resources, the streaming algorithm at hand should maximize the average quality of experience (QoE) while guaranteeing a minimum rate for each user. In this paper, we propose a cross layer optimization approach that maximizes the available rate to each user and efficiently uses it to maximize users' QoE. Particularly, we consider a tile based 360 degree video streaming, and we optimize a QoE metric that balances the tradeoff between maximizing each user's QoE and ensuring fairness among users. We show that the problem can be decoupled into two interrelated subproblems: (i) a physical layer subproblem whose objective is to find the download rate for each user, and (ii) an application layer subproblem whose objective is to use that rate to find a quality decision per tile such that the user's QoE is maximized. We prove that the physical layer subproblem can be solved optimally with low complexity and an actor-critic deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is proposed to leverage the parallel training of multiple independent agents and solve the application layer subproblem. Extensive experiments reveal the robustness of our scheme and demonstrate its significant performance improvement compared to several baseline algorithms.

Due to the wide application of signals with OFDM-modulation, security is becoming more and more important. In this paper, we propose a security method of masking digital messages in signals with OFDM-modulation by chaotic sequences formed with Chebyshev's polynomials of the 1-st kind of different orders. The evaluation of Independent and Identically distributed (IID) security (level of masking the signal to noise) of signals formed with the proposed method is passing over. Simulation results have shown that in comparison with systems that use harmonical signals with OFDM-modulation, chaotic signals with OFDM-modulation with signal constellation can ensure a higher level of IID-security. This has been confirmed by the computed values of Brock Dechert Scheinkman (BDS) statistics, the type of time realization, energy spectrum, and 'shape' in the pseudo-phase space. The obtained results give grounds to claim that the application of the proposed method will allow providing the required level of IID-secrecy in systems with OFDM-modulation. Consequently, it can provide reliable data protection from unauthorized access, which is especially relevant for information telecommunication systems for special purposes. © 2021 ieee.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and smart sensors are the tools towards the fifth agricultural revolution. Remote sensing is thriving in agriculture, broadening the horizons of cultivators and farming practitioners. However, adopting such a technological endeavour in a raw production process is a challenging task for farmers. Operation and maintenance of such systems require specific ICT knowledge. There is also a wide variety of software and hardware equipment to choose from that can greatly impact business costs and system performance according to the kind of cultivation. Due to the lack of guidance regarding the employment of precision agriculture monitoring systems, this paper proposes a detailed decision model regarding the requirements and considerations of deploying remote sensing capabilities on a cultivation. Agricultural businesses are in need of guidance when it comes to the adoption of technological advancements especially in the case when a carefully planned operation can produce a significant amount of profits.

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables software-based access to vast amounts of data streams from sensors measuring physical and virtual properties of smart devices and their surroundings. While sophisticated means for the control and data analysis of single IoT devices exist, a more process-oriented view of IoT systems is often missing. Such a lack of process awareness hinders the development of process-based systems on top of IoT environments and the application of process mining techniques for process analysis and optimization in IoT. We propose a framework for the stepwise correlation and composition of raw IoT sensor streams with events and activities on a process level based on Complex Event Processing (CEP). From this correlation we derive refined process event logs-possibly with ambiguities-that can be used for process analysis at runtime (i.e., online). We discuss the framework using examples from a smart factory.
