Recent years have witnessed a significant expansion in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, especially in environmental monitoring, which aims at providing full coverage over potential targets. With energy harvesting ability, sensor devices can be replenished by external energy sources, and thus their lifetime is prolonged. While existing literature focuses on minimizing deployment costs, the reliability management is overlooked. Previous research has addressed that a higher temperature exponentially accelerates hardware failure rates. The versatile outdoor environments impose a non-negligible thermal stress on the hardware and consequently reduce the reliability of devices. In this paper, we are the first to propose a reliability-driven sensor deployment approach to achieve minimum nodes, while satisfying (i) full target coverage, (ii) complete connectivity, (iii) energy-neutral operation, and (iv) reliability constraints. Given external temperature distribution, we propose an algorithm to convert reliability constraints to a single-value power threshold for each location. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is formulated and solved with CPLEX. Due to the complex nature of MILP, we propose a heuristic, named Reliability-driven Two-stage Heuristic (R-TSH), to approximate the optimal solution for large-scale problems. Extensive simulations are performed on a real-world dataset from the National Solar Radiation Database. Our results indicate that R-TSH meets all reliability constraints with only 20% more sensors than the optimal solution, while executing more than 1500x faster. Compared to state-of-the-art heuristics, R-TSH avoids 20 - 80% of reliability violations with a comparable number of nodes and execution time.

Blockchain technology is attracting the interest of the Internet of Things (IoT) domain as a decentralized platform for a trusted record of information. Thus, an increasing number of architectures have been proposed for integrating both technologies. However, few of them have focused on the sensing elements of the IoT systems, which are typically low-cost and resource-constrained devices. In this work, we propose an architecture that integrates blockchain at the sensor level, creating a chain of trust from the source of the data. To evaluate our proposal, we develop a cross-platform library for constrained IoT devices and deploy a full-fledged utilities management showcase using off-the-shelf hardware. From a device perspective, we measure the overhead that our architecture introduces in the system, in terms of memory and program space footprint, processing time, and power consumption. From the application perspective, we quantify the additional cost and delay incurred by using a public blockchain. Our results show that even constrained 8-bit devices with a 16-MHz AVR CPU can support the proposed solution. Moreover, the cost of maintaining a transparent record of daily resource consumption on the blockchain can be less than 1 USD a month.

A comparison of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) phototransistors prepared by spray and sputter coating process is presented. The work shows that spray coated layers provide significant advantages in sensor response over ZnO phototransistors made by physical vapour deposition and we show that spray deposited ZnO phototransistors can exhibit state-of-the-art performances for UV photodetectors. Topographic images of the samples surface shows that there is increase in surface roughness in spray coated samples indicating increasing grain sizes, which is considered the source of the greater sensor responsivity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is also used to understand the root cause of the greater UV responsivity. It was observed that sprayed ZnO TFTs are more sensitive to UV radiation due to higher adsorption of oxygen level. Responsivity and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the sprayed and sputtered ZnO TFTs are also evaluated.

WSN requires huge energy to run the sensor nodes for continuous process of sensing, actuating, processing, and transmission. Energy can be given to the devices either from the direct energy source or from the battery. An indoor wireless network can be operated by the direct energy sources, while the outdoor or remote or moving wireless sensor network can be operated through the battery power source. The biggest challenge in a battery-operated system is frequent replacement of batteries due to limited life and huge consumption of energy. Therefore, Energy Harvesting will be a better option to charge the batteries to avoid frequent change or replacement. This solution provides a longer lifespan and sustainable wireless sensor network. This paper provides a comprehensive review or guidance to a researcher about the possible energy sources in the wireless sensor network applications and hybrid approach to produce energy from the multiple sources for maximizing lifespan and sustainability of WSNs. © 2020 ieee.

Modern services consist of modular, interconnected components, e.g., microservices forming a service mesh. To dynamically adjust to ever-changing service demands, service components have to be instantiated on nodes across the network. Incoming flows requesting a service then need to be routed through the deployed instances while considering node and link capacities. Ultimately, the goal is to maximize the successfully served flows and Quality of Service (QoS) through online service coordination. Current approaches for service coordination are usually centralized, assuming up-to-date global knowledge and making global decisions for all nodes in the network. Such global knowledge and centralized decisions are not realistic in practical large-scale networks. To solve this problem, we propose two algorithms for fully distributed service coordination. The algorithms can be executed individually at each node in parallel and require very limited global knowledge. We compare and evaluate both algorithms with a state-of-the-art centralized approach in extensive simulations on a large-scale, real-world network topology. Our results indicate that the two algorithms can compete with centralized approaches in terms of solution quality but require less global knowledge and are magnitudes faster (more than 100x).

With a large fraction of deaths attributed to heart disorders, or specifically, cardiovascular diseases, there is an umpteen need to monitor the heart beat rate of individuals who are diagnosed as high risk individuals in a convenient fashion. Prior to a heart attack or anything detrimental to the condition of the human heart, the heart beat rate either shows a variation or an uphill or downhill gradient in its beat rate as found in medical studies. Thus we propose to keep a close watch for many such individuals altogether through a network of Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud computing. The data of heart beat for an individual qualifies as private medical information for an individual and thus end to end encryption is facilitated through AES 128 scheme to ensure data privacy. To ensure a real-time monitoring, which would be both easily accessible and also secured, we designed android application based platform for communication of the health alerts and monitoring of the individual's condition in real time.

In order to solve the instability problems of voltage, power angle and frequency in Xinjiang power grid, Xinjiang power grid is equipped with a large number of security and stability control systems to ensure the stable operation of the power grid. However, the existing stability control system test can not realize the comprehensive test of field operation equipment. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes to use the existing power dispatching data network and 2M communication channel between stations to establish a distributed collaborative test platform for stability control system. The platform is based on the distributed ADPSS (all digital real-time simulation) technology and power communication network, it designs re-mote interface device and field test device. And the platform studies the information transmission mechanism between the distributed ADPSS simulation platform and the field test device, as well as the synchronous test technology between the field test device and other technologies. So as to realize the remote, on-line and closed-loop comprehensive test of the security and stability control system. The platform can effectively improve the standardization of stability control system inspection and joint commissioning, reduce the manpower and material resources involved in joint commissioning and maintenance of cross regional system, and greatly improve the safety and reliability of the stability control system. © 2020 ieee.

Traditionally, the overlap between electronics and aerospace technology was limited to avionics, radars, satellites, and telecommunications. sensors networks are emerging as an additional area of relevant interaction. In fact, in addition to the classical paradigm in which on-board sensors improve the navigation and control of aerial vehicles, e.g., in the fly-by-wire context, novel paradigms of cooperation between fixed networks of ground sensors and airborne ones are emerging today, especially for monitoring the environment. In this paper, we review current development trends and open challenges with reference to practical examples. We focus on the role of sensor miniaturization, energy harvesting, energy-aware communication architectures, and data fusion. Multidisciplinary development teams, with expertise spanning from microelectronics and data analysis, to operation of UAV swarms are expected to be necessary to address these challenges.

A resistive flexible humidity sensor based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was designed and fabricated. Screen and gravure printing processes were used for monolithically fabricating the humidity sensor containing interdigitated electrodes (IDE), a sensing layer and a meandering conductive heater. An average thickness and surface roughness of 0.99 mu m and 0.23 mu m, respectively, was registered for the printed MWCNTs sensing layer. The capability of the printed sensor, with heater, was investigatedby subjecting it to relative humidity (RH) ranging from 10% to 90%. The response demonstrated an overall resistance change of 55% when the sensor was subjected to 90% RH, when compared to 10% RH. A maximum hysteresis of 5.1%, at 70% RH, was calculated for the resistive response of the sensor. The printed sensors can be bend with radius of curvature of 1.5 inch with literally no effect.
