With significant and continuing advances in information and communication technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) will play an increasingly important role in domains, such as healthcare, transportation, finance, and energy. In an IoT system, billions of devices (e.g., sensors, wearables, and smart appliances) are connected to the global network infrastructure, and one associated phenomenon is the generation of a large volume of data. Apart from data volume, the velocity, variety, and veracity of these data will pose a significant burden on conventional networking infrastructures. However, as sensor and fifth-generation (5G) cellular technologies advance, so will the pervasiveness of IoT deployment. Parallel to this trend, cloud computing has been integrated with IoT in order to address limitations in existing IoT networks (e.g., storage and computing resources), and examples include Google cloud dataflow and Amazon IoT. However, cloud-centric IoT solutions may not be suited for delay-sensitive and computationally intensive applications, for example, due to resource availability, end-to-end latency, bandwidth, etc. Increasingly, large-scale IoT deployments demand high connectivity, interoperability, and orchestration which are necessary for minimizing latency and maximizing throughput. This highlights the importance of a distributedcomputing platform that can support the interactions between IoT and cloud computingsystems.

We report recent development in laser spectroscopic gas sensing with microstructured hollow-core optical fibres and sub-wavelength-diameter optical nanofibers. The spectroscopic methods employed are photothermal spectroscopy for gases with strong absorption and stimulated Raman gain/dispersion spectroscopy for Ramanactive gases. Compared with open-path systems, the use of microstructured optical fibres as sensing elements enables compact all-fibre systems with high performance. With photothermal interferometry, parts-per-billion (ppb) to parts-per-trillion (ppt) level detection of acetylene, methane and ammonia are demonstrated with dynamic range up to seven orders of magnitude. With stimulated Raman spectroscopy, parts-per-million (ppm) level detection of hydrogen is achieved with dynamic range of five orders of magnitude.

Smart homes using IoT devices for resident monitoring and/or appliances metering, aim to optimise the home environment and provide assistance to health practitioners, when it comes to the elderly or people with certain diseases. Recently, research has moved towards integrating sensory outputs other than visibility and audio, with sensors aiming to mimic all five senses of the human. In this paper, we take onboard an IoT installation scenario with cameras, RFID tags and an electronic nose to capture repetitive behaviors of home residents suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) episodes. We propose the setup of such an IoT system, which utilises visible, movement and smell sensors. We devise an OCD metric to classify the behavior of the resident and we give a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) algorithm to classify and predict the behavior based on the metric. Finally, when OCD behavior is identified, we provide a game-theoretic algorithm for the patient to play, in order to minimise the OCD intrusive thoughts.

In this paper, we focus on designing a holistic approach to gather, monitor and analyze heterogeneous sources on allergies and allergens into one system. The dimensions of mobile crowdsensing, the sensor-based measurements, and micro-blogging raw texts are combined to address all different situations and needs. We envision that our system can be used for public health monitoring in order to early predict allergy/allergens or allergy-related irritants outbreaks. To the best of our knowledge, our system is the first holistic approach of a surveillance system for allergy in the US region.

Smart Farming is a development that emphasizes on the use of modern technologies in the cyber-physical field management cycle. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud computing have accelerated the digital transformation of the conventional agricultural practices promising increased production rate and product quality. The adoption of smart farming though is hampered because of the lack of models providing guidance to practitioners regarding the necessary components that constitute IoT based monitoring systems. To guide the process of designing and implementing Smart farming monitoring systems, in this paper we propose a generic reference architecture model, taking also into consideration a very important non-functional requirement, the energy consumption restriction. Moreover, we present and discuss the technologies that incorporate the four layers of the architecture model that are the sensor Layer, the Network Layer, the Service Layer and the Application Layer. A discussion is also conducted upon the challenges that smart farming monitoring systems face.
