The escalating need for energy in the recent times is unprecedented, which is driving the penetration of renewable energy sources in distribution system in a big way. The growing number of renewable sources in a system has made the control, operation and protection of the system very complex. Among others, one of the key issues in seamless interconnection of renewable energy sources to a system is islanding. This paper proposes a new and efficient islanding detection method that employs transfer learning based technique. The results show that the proposed method can successfully classify islanding events with a good accuracy.

This paper investigates the potential for provision of frequency regulation services in combination with other financially rewarding services, such as peak demand reduction and Photovoltaic (PV) export support by distributed Battery Energy storage systems (BESS). Initially, the financial potential from the individual services were estimated and the possible combination of services were evaluated. Historical data for consumption and PV generation were used from residential sites from various locations in Cyprus, as well as frequency measurements from the local electricity grid. Modelling and simulation of those services was performed, based on the historical data and subsequently the operational and financial performance of the services was examined. Different combinations of services were tested, and the operational and technical conflicts were indicated. The most valuable and viable combinations are presented and analyzed further. A high-level control strategy has been developed aiming at the maximization of the economic value streams while avoiding the operational and technical conflicts.

The coupling model construction and node importance evaluation method for the electric sensor communication network is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the electric sensor communication network is used as the main basis. The coupling weight is used to establish the coupling model of the sensor communication network and the power network. Secondly, based on complex system theory, node importance evaluation index set of sensor communication network is established including node combination degree, node communication efficiency and betweenness-based node importance. Finally, the node importance evaluation mechanism based on the normal cloud combination weight is used to obtain the importance of each node in the power sensor communication network. The effectiveness of established model is verified by simulation example. The results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively evaluate the importance of power sensor communication network nodes.

The digital currency Bitcoin has had remarkable growth since it was first proposed in 2008. Its distributed nature allows currency transactions without a central authority by using cryptographic methods and a data structure called the blockchain. Imagine that you could run the Bitcoin protocol on a quantum computer. What advantages can be had over classical Bitcoin? This is the question we answer here by introducing Quantum Bitcoin which, among other features, has immediate local verification of transactions. This is a major improvement over classical Bitcoin since we no longer need the computationally-intensive and time-consuming method of recording all transactions in the blockchain. Quantum Bitcoin is the first distributed quantum currency, and this paper introduces the necessary tools including a novel two-stage quantum mining process. In addition, we have counterfeiting resistance, fully anonymous and free transactions, and a smaller footprint than classical Bitcoin. In this paper we construct Quantum Bitcoin, a novel currency that draws its inspiration from both Bitcoin and quantum mechanics. As we later show, our new currency has several interesting advantages over existing payment systems, although the drawback is that it requires a quantum computer to function.

This paper presents design and modeling of electrochemical sensor for determining ion concentration in the solution considered. The proposed system consists of three planar electrodes namely working electrode, counter electrode and reference electrode on Polyester substrate. The sensor is designed to ensure maximum peak current for applied voltage on different geometries of working electrode. This paper presents simulation results of cyclic voltammetry plots and concentration profiles of designed planar electrodes using COMSOL Multiphysics, a commercial Finite Element Analysis Package. The total current is plotted at the working electrode by sweeping the scan rate of voltammogram for different geometries of the electrode. The simulation is carried out using Electro-analysis physics in COMSOL. © 2019 ieee.

The fireproof sensor network plays a more and more important role on monitoring and detecting forest fire. Different from previous researches which focus mostly on plane or single slope, this work deals with the scenarios of unsmooth moutainous land, which are the majority of application situations in forest fire prevention. The layout of wireless sensor nodes in the complex forest slope is a typical NP-complete problem. Another difficulty is that varied terrain factors bring huge obstacles for calculating the fitness value of optimization algorithm. To overcome these difficulties, firstly, this paper provides a computing method of fitness value, based on fire-response time on the simulated forest land. Secondly, we analyze the defects on parameter adjustment of original NMCSA (Novel Modified Cuckoo Search Algorithm), and improve it in two aspects: (1) cutting down the step-size factor errors by using mean operator and (2) redefining the updating method of discarding probability. The simulated experiments indicate that the improved NMCSA outperforms the previous algorithms in convergence speed and accuracy. What's more, the averaged response time of the generated layout by the new method is shorter. © 2019 ieee.

A novel fluorinated graphene-based humidity sensor was successfully developed for humidity monitoring applications. The humidity sensor was fabricated by screen printing silver (Ag) interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) on a flexible polyimide substrate. A fluorinated graphene powder, that was uniformly dispersed in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) using the ultra-sonication process, was drop casted on the IDEs as a humidity sensing layer. The resistive response of the fabricated humidity sensor towards varying relative humidity (RH) levels ranging from 20% RH to 70% RH, in steps of 10% RH, was investigated at a constant temperature of 24 °C. A maximum resistance change of 12.1% was observed when the humidity was changed from 20% RH to 70% RH, with a sensitivity of 0.24 %/%RH.

This paper presents a flexible, printed and robust sensor platform for the detection of various parameters: strain, flow speed, pressure, conductivity, temperature and magnetic field. The sensors are based on Laser-Induced Graphene fabricated by laser printing on Kapton substrate. Multi-functionality is obtained by exploiting printing process combined with the flexible nature of Kapton and the piezoresistivity of Graphene. sensor have been implemented for the detection of strain, flow speeds, forces pressure, salinity and magnetic field. Their sensitivity and dynamic range can be tailored via the substrate and laser printing design. A robust and reliable operation was obtained during underwater experiments in the Red Sea.

Due to environmental and energy policy concerns distributed generation is popular due to its better utilization of power generation technologies. In this paper a hybrid power plant is incorporated upon the sugar cane power plant, sugar cane plant is optimum for such distributed generation as a byproduct of a sugar plant is used for power generation however the working period is small therefore to extend the period other renewable resources such as CHP and solar are incorporated. The capital cost of the plant is always an issue for the company, which mainly depends upon the capacity of components. Therefore, choices are to be made based on the economy. Cost and Benefit analysis is one such approach to maximize financial benefit. In this Paper optimal size of all components to be incorporated in sugar, the plant is determined using Yalmip Toolbox in Matlab. © 2019 ieee.

Simultaneous and flexible reduction of active and reactive power (P and Q) oscillations during grid imbalance in distributed power generation system is quite complex and poses a major research challenge. Various control techniques such as proportional-integral, proportional-resonant (PR) and hysteresis control have already proved their effectiveness under unbalanced grid (UG) conditions. Out of the above control techniques, PR controller is considered to be the most popular controller due to its simultaneous tracking ability for both positive and negative sequence of grid current. The model predictive controller is relatively recent, and its performance has been evaluated for UG conditions. But, no comparative experimental study with the popular PR controller has been reported for flexible P and Q transfer to the UG. In this paper, a comparative practical study is presented for verifying the static and dynamic performance of the two controllers in a distributed generation system during grid unbalance. The paper also examines the impact of sampling time on the static and dynamic performance of the controllers. Discrete-time designs of the two controllers are included, and stability is ensured. A one-kilowatt experimental laboratory prototype has been built to validate the results.
