Recent developments in Materials and Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) technologies are currently stimulating the development of new class of flexible epidermal devices for the wireless remote monitoring of biophysical parameters. The natural movements and gestures of the human body will not only produce mechanical stretching of skin antennas but they could also affect their communication performance. In this contribution we evaluate the degradation of the radiation gain of on-skin UHF antennas in common gestures by a combined mechanical-electromagnetic model. The deformation of the skin is firstly quantified by using a 3D scanner and hence the communication impact is evaluated with reference to a typical 867 MHz thin wire split-ring epidermal antenna. Preliminary numerical simulations and experimentations demonstrated that the behavior of the antenna is modified with a maximum 30% degradation of the read distance for the strain orientation producing the minimum mechanical stiffness.

Two recent developments in temperature sensing are given as examples for sensor innovations with a potentially strong impact. Non-invasive and model-based sensing have been identified as trends. All power systems have some inherent level of flexibility as loads change over time and sometimes in unpredictable ways. In addition, as renewable energy sources (RES) are intermittent in nature (this is more common to wind systems and less for PV systems) increasing their share in the energy mix means the demand/supply balance will be even harder to achieve through the existing inflexible conventional power plans. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are a promising technology that can provide flexibility, reliability, and resilience to the power grid. This paper focuses on the analysis of the first-ever community BESS installed in Cyprus, in terms of system integration, control strategies, and overall system operation. At the end of the paper, recommendations for further exploitation of the community BESS are given, such as the possibility of providing ancillary services to the distribution grid.

In recent years, Wireless sensor Network (WSN) have been widely used in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), especially in smart grid. The sensors not only extract the key attributes of the basic data onto operating state of various underground cables, but also remove the redundant description of the data onto the data systems. Further, the sensors can also deal with inconsistent information about the data systems. In order to ensure the reliable fusion data containing all the key information of the basic data and meeting the standard requirements of underground cable, we could overlap the sensing areas of the sensor nodes with each other. The deployment often has the problems of weak expansion ability, network delay and uneven energy consumption of nodes. Therefore, this paper focuses on the optimal weight data fusion analysis to improve the current situation. This method is more efficient for data fusion processing and data extraction.

Indium-gallium-zinc-oxide thin-film transistors gated with e-beam processed, thin Al2O3 have been fabricated on a plastic substrate. The devices show a low operating voltage (VD) of less than 1 V, a high current on/off ratio >10(3), threshold voltage Vth of 0.07V, mobility mu of 145.6 cm(2)V(-1)s(-1) and a low subthreshold swing <200 mV/decade. The effects of bending on the gate dielectric in terms of important performance parameters have been studied and it is shown that the devices maintain their high performance even when flexed to a curvature radius of 15 mm. As a result, such devices possess a great potential for low-power, flexible electronics.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an environment that can be divided in three large layers: the sensor/actuator level where a wide variety of objects with different computing, sensors and communication capabilities resides, the communication layer with wireless technologies such as ZigBee, Bluetooth and emerging 6LoWPAN (e.g LoRa), and the intelligence layer, where computing analytics/decisions occur. IoT can be used for monitoring, inferring problems, decision making at a business level or actuating at the edge via IoT nodes. As the IoT sensor network grows, an enormous amount of data from multiple sources flows to the intelligence layer. In order to make decisions based on analytics over these data, the measurements need to be precise and accurate. Data fusion is an effective way to improve data quality, however, IoT environments are still evolving and the best way and location where data fusion should happen is an open problem. This paper presents one potential strategy for IoT sensor data fusion by implementing multi-sensor data fusion as microservices using a container platform built into an opensource IoT middleware based in a fog computing infrastructure which is can scale automatically as the influx of data from the IoT nodes grows. A number of data fusion tests were performed for different amounts of IoT nodes and sensor readings over ZigBee and LoRa using a specific data fusion algorithm. The results show that, the strategy can be effectively used in IoT heterogeneous environments.
