This paper presents an extensive set of measurements and suitable consideration on human finger energy harvesting from a mechanically excited piezoelectric element. The actual interest in portable systems and the constant development of electronic devices operating with low power consumption has pushed the scientific research to investigate on systems capable of collecting energy from the environment around them: this topic is the so-called energy harvesting (EH). The EH technologies bring together all the techniques and processes that make it possible recovery, transformation, and accumulation of energy, even of small quantities, obtained from different sources in the environment (radio signals, heat, light, vibration, wind, etc.). In this scenario, mechanical vibrations are a viable solution for providing low power to electronic systems. In particular, in this work, we present a test analysis on a harvesting system composed by a 3D printer finger emulating the human behaviour and a piezoelectric strip to be applied in autonomous smart gloves. Here, the experimental results using a commercial flexible bimorph piezoelectric transducer are given when the strip is implemented on a moving 3D printed finger. Results have demonstrated that a single finger can produce an open-circuit alternate peak-to-peak voltage up to 35.1 V, generating a maximum energy around 5 µW.

The objective of ensuring the security of industrial sites, especially those of major economic and social importance or of special production, is of paramount importance to any country. To this end, a number of organizational and technical measures are taken, in most cases involving the use of a variety of sensors to provide physical protection in the different control and security systems. At the following paper the focus is set on probabilistic nature of location of an alleged intruder. Therefore in the security systems of critical infrastructure a combination of various sensors is being used in order to attain higher probability of correct detection and to minimize the dispersion of the measured coordinates. © 2019 ieee.

Efficient energy utilization is an important subject in the world that is filled with most of the non-renewable resources. In this paper, we are presenting Intelligent Energy meter, which is a smart Electricity measuring device that is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi that helps the direct communication with the Electricity consumers and the Electricity suppliers in terms of the number of units consumed, billing and control of the electricity flow. This electricity meter makes use of the BlynkIoT platform which provides free cloud and connectivity for the IoT devices. The proposed project is aimed at eliminating the human effort for the collection of the electricity bill from every consumer by automating the billing system through the Internet and online payment methods. This device is different from the existing systems not only in terms of the consumer authentication provided in the payment gateway and also in utilizing the industry grade online payment technology -paytm for the secured online payment. © 2019 ieee.

Intelligent fault detection by sensor data can ensure the reliability and availability of critical infrastructures. Switches and crossings (S&C) are one of the most important assets of railway networks. They divert trains in different directions by shifting the position of switch rail by point operating equipment (POE). The sensors record the electrical current drawn by the motor in POE. The extraction of features from time-series sensor data enables the detection of faults in POE. This paper proposes a deep learning model to detect faults in railway POE without the need for preprocessing the raw time-series data. It is based on 1-D convolution neural network. The architecture of the proposed deep learning network consists of three types of layers. The first layer is called the local convolution layer. It consists of three 1-D convolution layer to extract local temporal features from three non-overlapping segments of time-series data of different operating phases of POE. The second layer is fully-connected convolution layer. It extracts global temporal features. And the last layer is the output layer, it provides the binary output of fault or fault free for a given sensor data. The result shows that this framework can classify fault with 95.60% accuracy.

Worldwide changes in climate and increasing pollution level are tremendously affecting the need for environmental monitoring solutions. Recent activities in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) together with Cloud computing paradigm brought an entirely new perspective on monitoring as part of the Industrial Internet of Things (HoT). However, most of the systems developed today are still facing lack of flexibility and security. This work presents the results of prototyping the HoT wireless environmental monitoring system from both hardware and software sides. The developed mechanisms enable connectivity in infrastructure and mesh-like modes, where each sensor could act as relay allowing for improved node-failure resistance and scalability. Next, the authentication mechanism is proposed to enable transparent migration of any node between different network segments while keeping the overall operation secure. Finally, proof of the concept prototype deployment in real-life conditions shows the potential of metropolitan-scale utilization of the developed system.

With increased focus on in situ analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are getting deployed on embedded devices at the network edge. Growing popularity of Deep Learning (DL) and inference largely due to minimization of feature engineering, availability of pre-trained models and fine-tunable datasets especially in image and video analytics, have made these de-facto standard. However, the embedded systems employing these models are often resource constrained and fail to handle scenarios where arrival rate and input data volume increase over a given time period. This has a direct effect on the storage and network usage of such devices, rendering the traditional strategies of input buffering and network offloading ineffective. This paper investigates the use of dynamic layer-wise partitioning and partial execution of DL inference phase to enable inelastic embedded systems to support varying sensing rates and large data volume. The proposed partial execution scheme and partitioning algorithm perform better than standard frame-wise inference methods, when evaluated using workloads of few popular CNNs used in standard object detection models.

sensors based on piezoelectric materials like ZnO, lead zirconate titanate (PZT), MoS 2 , poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its similar copolymer p(vdf-TrFE) have exhibit excellent through converting mechanical signal into electrical output [1] – [3] . For these conventional piezoelectric materials: PZT and PVDF, PZT possesses excellent dielectric and piezoelectric properties, but is a rigid ceramic with a very high Young’s modulus (63 GPa). In contrast, PVDF is a soft polymer with low Young’s modulus (2.9 GPa), but its piezoelectric charge coefficient d 33 is an order of magnitude lower than of PZT (20 pC/N), which are making they unsuitable for wearable application [4] – [5] . Therefore, there is the need to develop a piezoelectric material with high piezoelectric activity, low Young’s modulus and the ability to stretch and conform for wearable sensing. Ferroelectret is a thin film of polymer foam that can generate electrical signal under mechanical force, which is similar to piezoelectric materials. The typical internal structure of a ferroelectret foam is randomly arranged cellular voids with positive and negative charges stored separately on each surface of the void. Due to the material of the polymer and its cellular structure, the elastic modulus of the ferroelectret is low. The ferroelectret is readily compressible and will undergo large deformation when under a compressive force, which results in a strong piezoelectric effect. Due to its advanced piezoelectric properties in comparison with other piezoelectric materials, numerous applications have been proposed, such as acoustic transducers, high frequency loudspeakers, ultrasonic transmitters and receivers, hydrophones and accelerometers [6] . The soft, flexible nature of the polymer ferroelectret makes it highly suitable for use in wearable sensing applications.

Unwanted fire causes many disasters. Thus, fire detection has been an important phenomenon to save human life. In this paper, we proposed a hybrid model that incorporates computer vision and smoke sensor-based fire detection into a single system to devise a more accurate and smart fire detection system. Our vision-based fire detection model utilizes color and motion attributes of fire combustion. Rule-based color segmentation is performed for classifying fire color regions and a modified image difference technique is used for detecting the motion of fire regions in consecutive frames. The proposed dynamic threshold technique is used for mitigating the false positive rate of the vision-based model. After performing a vision-based analysis, the proposed algorithm uses the MQ-2 smoke sensor to detect environment smoke and gas caused by fire combustion. Our implemented system raises a fire alarm in the form of remote notification after analyzing vision and smoke sensor-based model data. Real life experimental data shows that our system can detect fire with 86.67% of accuracy. In addition, the proposed system can be incorporated in existing surveillance systems at an adequately low extra expense. © 2019 ieee.

For economical as well as environmental reasons, logistical planning and efficient assignment of transport vehicles in public transportation need a precise knowledge of passenger utilization. To provide reliable figures sophisticated counting methods are demanded. Previously developed systems, mostly using a single 2D image sensor or a 3D depth sensor, can not fully achieve the required accuracy. In this paper, we present a robust people counting algorithm, based on multi sensor data fusion. Our solution runs on embedded systems with reasonable requirements with respect to computational power. 3D distance information, obtained from the ToF system, is used to perform the basic detection of objects. Once detected, the objects get additional classification features exploiting the data provided by a RGB camera and an IR thermal sensor. We describe the current state of fusing and processing of the collected data including the detection, classification (vital, non-vital), as well as sequential tracking and counting. We provide current counting results along with insights to future development concepts to improve the stated algorithms especially in terms of vital, nonvital classification and object recognition.

With the advent of blockchain technologies, the idea of decentralized applications has gained traction. Smart contracts permit the implementation of application logic to foster distributed systems that are capable of removing intermediaries. Hereby, lock in effects originating from isolated data storage and central authorities are mitigated. Yet, smart contracts deployed to a ledger generate dependencies on the underlying blockchain. Over time, requirements regarding contract execution may detach from the utilized blockchain due to contradicting incentives and security or performance issues. To avoid a novel form of lock in effect towards a host blockchain, we introduce a concept for smart contract portability that permits any user to migrate contract logic and state between blockchains in a flexible and verifiable manner. As the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is supported by a multitude of blockchain implementations, it poses a common execution environment for smart contracts. We provide a toolbox that facilitates smart contract portability between EVM-compatible blockchains without trust requirements in the entity executing the migration process. To prove the concept's soundness, we transfer token contracts based on the ERC20 standard as well as applications containing dependencies to other smart contracts. Our evaluation shows the validity of ported applications including their current states.
