The deployment of embedded sensing devices on croplands and pastures is an enabling element for precision agriculture applications. Changing conditions (e.g., different crops being grown), however, may require the occasional reconfiguration of the resulting networks of wireless sensors, e.g., to modify data reporting rates or synchronize internal clocks. In this demo we showcase an opportunistic broadcast channel to forward such configuration messages to embedded systems. The transmitting station is realized by means of an electric fence energizer, a device frequently utilized in agricultural settings. On the receiver side, only little hardware efforts are required to capture the high-voltage pulses and decode transmitted configuration messages.

This paper proposes an architecture for leveraging cloud computing technology to reduce training time for deep reinforcement learning models for autonomous driving by distributing the training process across a pool of virtual machines. By parallelizing the training process, careful design of the reward function and use of techniques like transfer learning, we demonstrate a decrease in training time for our example autonomous driving problem from 140 hours to less than 1 hour. We go over our network architecture, job distribution paradigm, reward function design and report results from experiments on small sized cluster (1-6 training nodes) of machines. We also discuss the limitations of our approach when trying to scale up to massive clusters.

In wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes relay data, which maintains consistency in the sensor network. If cut vertex nodes failed it leads to partitioning in network, which disrupts the communication. It requires an autonomous technique that finds the fail node and provides recovery to them. In this paper the proposed approach provides recovery from network partitioning in distribute WSN. The proposed approach increases the lifetime of network.

The Energy transition is the pathway towards the decarbonisation of the energy system. Transformation of the European energy sector requires urgent action on a pan-European scale, and while a global energy transition is underway, further research actions and incentives for innovation are needed to deliver the smart grids concept and the RES integration under energy efficiency. For this reason, synergy work on national, regional and European level are pivotal in the development work of the Energy transition. Prerequisites for a smooth transition are: A solid R&I network for all countries, analytical knowledge of the R&I status, systematic information to all EU countries equally on how investments in smart grids can be beneficial and the means on how they achieve that. PANTERA aims to address at the same time all prerequisites and thus facilitate the synergy work in Europe by developing a multi-dimensional platform of pan-European status and influence, capable of leveraging coherence and trust as a pull towards enhanced R&I in energy systems centered around an integrated grid active and responsive.

In a Wireless sensor Network (WSN), sensor nodes are small inexpensive sensing and computing devices collaborating to form a network. However, they work with limited power and memory in hard-to-reach locations and extreme weather conditions. In general, a large number of tiny sensor nodes are usually deployed randomly to monitor one or more physical phenomena like- temperature, humidity etc. Due to limited power resources sensing, storage and retrieval of data become critical issues in wireless sensor data management. In this paper we propose a novel data management scheme that facilitates- (i) power efficient sensing, (ii) optimal utilization of storage space and (iii) energy and time efficient query processing in a WSN. Our proposed data sensing and storage schemes are based on sleep-scheduling and collaborative sensing techniques respectively. Next, our query processing scheme involves a Lookup technique that exploits the collaborative sensing which is a result of sleep-scheduling of nodes in a WSN. Our simulation results have proved the validity of our proposal.

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) are an excellent fit to city-scale IoT applications becuase of their long range and a battery life of several years, and a data rate of 25-50kbps, which is sufficient to carry IoT traffic. However, a practical limitation of a LPWAN-based real-time wireless network is the duty-cycle limit imposed on the sub-1GHz band by the FCC. In this paper, we overcome this challenge by proposing the first duty-cycle-aware wireless link scheduling algorithm for real-time LPWANs that considers the urgency of the packets as well as the availability of the wireless channels. The proposed algorithm is implemented in a five-node, wide-area outdoor test-bed in multiple real-world scenarios. Simulation results are provided to quantify its performance under different settings (e.g. larger networks, variety of workloads, and multiple baselines). In both real-world deployments and simulations, the proposed algorithm outperforms standard scheduling algorithms in terms of link schedulability, deadline misses, and buffer size.

Wireless sensor-Actuator Networks (WSANs) are being adopted as an enabling technology for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in process industries. Industrial applications impose stringent requirements in reliability and real-time performance on WSANs. To enhance reliability, industrial standards, such as WirelessHART, embrace Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) that integrates channel hopping and TDMA at the MAC layer. Within a network governed by a same gateway, WirelessHART prohibits channel reuse, i.e., concurrent transmissions in the same channel, to avoid interference between concurrent transmissions. Preventing channel reuse however negatively affects real-time performance. To meet the demand for both reliability and real-time performance by industrial applications, we propose a conservative channel reuse approach designed to enhance the real-time performance while limiting its impact on reliability in WSANs. In contrast to traditional channel reuse designed to optimize performance at the cost of reliability, our conservative approach introduces channel reuse only when needed to meet the timing constraints of flows. Finally, we present an algorithm to detect reliability degradation caused by channel reuse so that channels can be reassigned to further improve reliability. Experimental results based on two physical testbeds show that our approach significantly improves real-time performance while maintaining a high degree of reliability.

Wireless sensor networks with a large number of cheap low-power interconnected devices bring up challenging tasks when considering the security of their communications. Our paper addresses the issue how cryptographic link keys between communicating sensor nodes can be continuously re-secured even in presence of an attacker who can read the memory of captured nodes. distributed sensor systems enable us to use two different approaches to link key (re-)establishment - secrecy amplification and key extraction from radio channel fading. A secrecy amplification protocol lets a group of neighboring nodes cooperate together to re-secure previously compromised link keys using the non-compromised paths, and previous research showed the ability of secrecy amplification protocols to improve the security of a network from 50% of compromised link keys to 90% of secure keys. Key extraction then exploits radio channel properties to generate secret bits shared between two radio-enabled devices. We propose to combine secrecy amplification and key extraction into a dynamic protocol, where every node will dynamically decide what approach provides a greater benefit, considering the probability of getting the link key re-secured and the resources available. In principle, the more standard traffic messages are exchanged on a given link, the more beneficiary is the usage of key extractions. And less busy links then rely on secrecy amplification(1).

This research investigates information retrieval from distributed databases. The most popular example of such systems are the regular web search engines. Thus, this paper discusses in depth the search engines systems and have made an evaluation of different search engines based on popular queries searched. We first explores the structure of the search engines and explain its functions behind the scenes, how they can get the results for a specific query. The key idea behind search engines is the ranking algorithms used to bring the appropriate results. This research has chosen Google, Yahoo, and Bing to do evaluation experiments, since they are top search engines used nowadays.
