This paper presents Virtual Lock, a novel smartphone application for personal surveillance using camera sensor networks. The proposed system consists of a smartphone and a set of easily deployable wireless camera sensor motes and enables an inexpensive solution to continuous monitoring of one's surroundings. Once camera sensor motes are deployed, a user can define multiple regions of interest for each camera's view using a smartphone application. Then the camera sensor network monitors for any changes in the defined regions of interest. If an event is detected, e.g., when a valuable good inside a region of interest is missing, the Virtual Lock system notifies the user via her smartphone. This paper describes the Virtual Lock system and demonstrates the potential of camera sensor networks.

In this paper we report the design and implementation of the networking and communication part of a WSN application for measuring industrial and residential acoustic noise. The network is formed in tree topology and a global synchronization is achieved. A link-state routing is tightly binded with the synchronization so that the network overhead is greatly reduced. Transmission scheduling is implemented in the network due to the fact that noise measuring is time-correlated, resource-consuming, and uninterruptible. The application is built on the CiNet cross-layer protocol stack. In our testbed, two ieee 802.15.4 platforms (Chipcon CC2420 and Jennic JN5148) worked seamlessly. The uniqueness of this application is that it combines routing, global synchronization, and scheduling under a single framework. The network has been already deployed in the residential area of Kokkola city on the western coast of Finland.

Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) communication protocols in wireless sensor networks provide collision-free communication that increases energy-efficiency while maintaining deterministic packet latencies. The TDMA-ASAP[ 1] protocol proposed stealing neighbor's slots when networks are running at low-duty cycles to reduce the potentially large latencies of the TDMA cycle size. In this paper, we further reduce the end-to-end latencies by intelligently spreading slots across the TDMA cycle and by enhancing the stealing opportunities in the schedule, stealing slots scheduled for downstream (control) and upstream (data) messages. We also provide a practical time synchronization algorithm that operates within the TDMA schedule. In order to evaluate our new schemes, we carried out both simulation studies to show scalability and a testbed implementation of FireFly wireless sensor nodes to show feasibility. Our schemes provide higher peak throughput (nearly 2x) as compared to a common low-power-listen contention-based (LPL-CSMA) protocol and improves the average packet latency by as much as 5x as compared to existing TDMA protocols without slot-stealing and up to 2x as compared to TDMA-ASAP.

networks for the smart grids are characterized by millions of sensor nodes exchanging information about the status of the grid. This information exchange must be realized reliably and efficiently due to the mission critical nature of the power grid. Hence, the applications and the network protocols developed for the smart grid need go through rigorous testing and analysis before deployment. Developers usually do not have access to such a large-scale network that can be used as a controlled test-bed;therefore, network simulation becomes an essential tool for testing. network simulation is a well studied problem in the literature and there are various widely used network simulators. These simulators can be adopted for testing applications and protocols of the smart grid. Due to the scale of these networks, parallel/distributed simulations need to be conducted. Even though most network simulators support distributed simulations, generating a large-scale network model to simulate can still be a cumbersome task. In this survey, we describe a selection of commonly used network simulators and evaluate them with respect to the following features that can aid users in distributed simulations of large-scale networks: transparency of setting up distributed simulation, automated topology generation, information hiding, lightweight routing protocols, network error simulation, evaluation of the network model during simulation and trace analysis tools. As a complementary result, we identify two issues with network simulators that can be addressed with runtime steering methods. © 2011 ACM.

Several projects in the recent past have aimed at promoting Wireless sensor networks as an infrastructure technology, where several independent users can submit applications that execute concurrently across the network. Concurrent multiple applications cause significant energyusage overhead on sensor nodes, that cannot be eliminated by traditional schemes optimized for single-application scenarios. In this paper, we outline two main optimization techniques for reducing power consumption across applications. First, we describe a compiler based approach that identifies redundant sensing requests across applications and eliminates those. Second, we cluster the radio transmissions together by concatenating packets from independent applications based on Rate-Harmonized Scheduling.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are nowadays considered to be a very active research field. WSNs consist of interconnected small devices, which are managed by users. Their demands in hardware are limited and the usage of particular communication protocols lead in great autonomy.. WSN application is the localization of targets invading in the area covered by sensors' range. This target may be an animal, human, object or anything else. Localization can only take place when the sensors are capable of processing data and of communicating with each other. When these conditions hold, localization is achieved. A simulation environment has been developed in Matlab for studying the above described problem, where the localization algorithm may be integrated together with different scenario parameters. These scenarios have been implemented for evaluating the localization algorithm performance for different mobile object trajectories and speeds as well as for different network topologies. Finally, the evaluation results are discussed and conclusions drawn are presented.

Secure data transfer (SDT) in wireless networks is required with minimum overhead. The SDT was done historically through cryptography, authentication, and probability based approaches. Collaborative approach for trust-based packet transfer is new to the wireless sensor network research. In the proposed research, trust value of a node is continuously updated using Sporas formula and repeated trust calculations. The average of these two provides the trust value of a node. The suspicious node will be informed to the neighbor nodes. Further, the neighbor nodes calculate their own trust of a suspicious node using its trust value plus trust factor received from their neighbor. The cooperative and collaborative approaches eliminate the suspicious node from the path quickly and confidently. The results show that the new approach is better than simply using the cooperative way or collaborative approach using Sporas formula.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) were been explored in various scenarios and several protocols have been developed. With the standardization of the ieee 802.15.4 protocol, sensor networks became interesting for application in industrial automation. The ieee 802.15.4 specifies physical and media access control layers that could be optimized to ensure low-power consumption. The focus in this paper is on real-time capabilities and reliability. We analyzed and compared the performance of the ieee 802.15.4 standard using OMNET++ Simulator. Among the objectives of our study is to outline which degree the standard accomplish real time requirements. Different application scenarios were been evaluated. Performance parameters such as data delivery delay and goodput are the main factors, which been considered in our study. We have focused on single sink scenarios and we have analyzed some network performance according to nodes number. Our simulation results can be explored for planning and deploying ieee 802.15.4 based sensor networks with specific performance demands. Besides, specific protocol limitations in real time environment can be identified and solutions can be suggested.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) is a powerful technology that can be used in many application domains varying from geology surveillance to medicine healthcare. However, current protocols for WSN are not suitable to handle the WSN applications with high mobility of sensor nodes. In this paper, we present a protocol named CIVIC designed for Vehicular Ad-hoc network. This protocol is based on one-hop broadcast and energy-aware routing mechanism dedicated to the high mobility WSN applications. The experiential simulation results show CIVIC has better performance comparing with those of other WSN routing protocols in view of its packet lost rate, data delay and energy consumption. © 2011 ieee.
