Recent years have witnessed a significant expansion in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, especially in environmental monitoring, which aims at providing full coverage over potential targets. With energy harvesting ability, sensor devices can be replenished by external energy sources, and thus their lifetime is prolonged. While existing literature focuses on minimizing deployment costs, the reliability management is overlooked. Previous research has addressed that a higher temperature exponentially accelerates hardware failure rates. The versatile outdoor environments impose a non-negligible thermal stress on the hardware and consequently reduce the reliability of devices. In this paper, we are the first to propose a reliability-driven sensor deployment approach to achieve minimum nodes, while satisfying (i) full target coverage, (ii) complete connectivity, (iii) energy-neutral operation, and (iv) reliability constraints. Given external temperature distribution, we propose an algorithm to convert reliability constraints to a single-value power threshold for each location. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is formulated and solved with CPLEX. Due to the complex nature of MILP, we propose a heuristic, named Reliability-driven Two-stage Heuristic (R-TSH), to approximate the optimal solution for large-scale problems. Extensive simulations are performed on a real-world dataset from the National Solar Radiation Database. Our results indicate that R-TSH meets all reliability constraints with only 20% more sensors than the optimal solution, while executing more than 1500x faster. Compared to state-of-the-art heuristics, R-TSH avoids 20 - 80% of reliability violations with a comparable number of nodes and execution time.

In the sixth generation (6G) networks, due to the massive Internet of Things (oT) connectivity and substantial growth of communication traffic, an effective Virtual network Function (VNF) orchestration scheme is anticipated to function dynamically and intelligently. Moving beyond the traditional paradigm of the VNF orchestration and employing VNFs on the network edge located cloudlets based on the inspiration from multi-access edge computing can intensify the overall performance of delay-sensitive applications. In this paper, we intend to investigate how to simultaneously leverage the ensembling of multiple deep learning models for proper calibration to provide real-time VNF placement solutions. We also address the challenges associated with state-of-the-art approaches to deal with dynamic network traffic and topology patterns. Our envisioned methods, based on Convolutional Neural networks and Artificial Neural networks named as E-ConvNets and E-ANN respectively, suggest two proactive VNF deployment strategies. These VNF placement strategies demonstrate (simulation results) encouraging performance (optimality gap nearly 7%) in terms of minimizing relocation and communication costs, and high scalability intelligence factor (around 0.93). Moreover, the presented results are further indications of integrating edge computing and deep learning-based strategies into similar research enigmas for future telecommunication networks.

Research conversation about Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been creating a buzz in the network universe for quite some time now. Over the years, this exploratory research has found its applications in a variety of domains. sensor nodes equipped with inadequate power, processing capability, storage, and energy are deployed in remote areas that remain unattended by humans. As a result, energy conservation of nodes is a challenging parameter that affects the lifespan of the node resulting in network degradation. In this paper, the challenges of sensor nodes, their actions causing energy wastage are studied in detail. Further, this paper presents a comparative study on cluster-based protocols being utilized to conserve node's energy. The review discovered various mechanisms for energy conservation with respect to the power component. Comparative analyses of various node metrics are graphically depicted. Although, many strategies improve energy conservation, but it was observed via this survey that these strategies might also negatively impact other important factors in overall network. © 2020 ieee.

Recently, agro sensor communications are getting popularity with the advent of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Infrastructure less MANETs are considered as a potential solution for agricultural domains to provide robust and effective operations in wireless networks by enabling routing characteristics at each mobile node. The efficient use of routing protocol is pivotal for network management in MANETs. In this research, we demonstrate a strategic routing analysis to evaluate the performance of different routing protocols, e.g., proactive and reactive in terms of various network quality of service (QoS) parameters for multiple data rate enabled agro sensor mobile nodes. Two different network scenarios (low-node and high-node) are simulated for various network parameters. Simulation results indicate that OLSR protocol provides higher throughput than others for all nodes. This investigation also shows that GRP has the highest network load capacity than other protocols for agro sensor applications. Another finding from this research i s t hat proactive protocols have the lower average end to end delay and MAC delay than reactive protocols. © 2019 ieee.

Clustering is a popular research area in designing routing protocols in the field of wireless sensor network. This paper proposes an agent cluster based routing protocol which will subdivide the cluster into independent subgroups according to the satisfaction list. The independent sub groups are associated with an agent node that can communicate to the cluster head. The proposed agent cluster based routing algorithm is created keeping into consideration to reduce the energy consumption while transmitting data from node to cluster head. The agent node is chosen based on the satisfaction list which reduces the chances of agent node die out problem thus enhancing the network reliability and lifetime. applications such as green house, agriculture field monitoring, where reliability and energy efficiency more important than data transmission rate this proposed protocol is suitable to implement. © 2019 ieee.

The paper is devoted to issues of the network traffic analysis in conditions of uncertain network protocol specifications. We propose an approach to identify typical structures of network protocols and determine their lexical specifications based on text-inspired methods for the structural analysis of raw data. High heterogeneity, partial lexical uncertainty and use of new, proprietary or modified data transfer protocols in computer networks explain high relevance of the research topic. We present the technique of network traffic analysis and the results of experiments, that confirm the applicability of the proposed approach.

Quality of service (QoS) in networking is the process of managing network resources to reduce packet loss, as well as lower network jitter and latency. It has been widely used in traditional networks and can also be implemented in the 5G network based on software-defined networking (SDN). A traditional network carries several challenges such as vendor dependency, the complexity of managing a large network, dynamical changes in forwarding policies, and the like. SDN is a new networking strategy that is designed to address the challenges of a traditional internet protocol network, including high levels of complexity and the inability to timely adapt to new QoS requirements. The fundamental idea behind SDNs compared to the conventional networking paradigm is the creation of horizontally integrated systems through the separation of the control and the data plane while providing an increasingly sophisticated set of abstractions. Various SDN-enabled QoS frameworks have recently emerged offering many possibilities for network reconfiguration and high-level definition of policies. QoS requirements for fifth generation (5G) networks have been defined relying on three main categories of use cases, including Extreme Mobile Broadband, Massive Machine-type Communications IoT 1 /M2M devices, and highly reliable M2M-communication (Ultra- reliable Machine- Type Communications. The present study analyzes and surveys the QoS based on the protocol of the OpenFlow method and QoS relying on the open-source SDN controller method in the 5G network. In addition, it discusses various architectural issues related to the SDN network of open-source controllers and examines their impact on the QoS. The study further outlines the characteristics of QoS parameters (e.g., latency, availability, reliability, jitter, and bandwidth) in a 5G network, followed by discussing and comparing such parameters in 5G which are defined by the world's leaders in 5G technology.

With edge computing, it is possible to offload computationally intensive tasks to closer and more powerful servers, passing through an edge network. This practice aims to reduce both response time and energy consumption of data-intensive applications, crucial constraints in mobile and IoT devices. In challenged networked scenarios, such as those deployed by first responders after a natural or human-made disaster, it is particularly challenging to achieve high levels of throughput due to scarce network conditions. In this paper, we present an algorithm for traffic management that takes advantage of a deep learning model to implement the forwarding mechanism during task offloading in these challenging scenarios. In particular, our work explores if and when it is worth using deep learning on a switch to route traffic generated by microservices and offloading requests. Our approach differs from classical ones in the design: we do not train centralized routing decisions. Instead, we let each router learn how to adapt to a lossy path without coordination, by merely using signals from standard performance-unaware protocols such as OSPF. Our results, obtained with a prototype and with simulations are encouraging, and uncover a few surprising results.

In recent years, smart home technology has become prevalant and important for various applications. A typical smart home system consists of sensing nodes sending raw data to a cloud server which performs inference using a Machine Learning (ML) model trained offline. This approach suffers from high energy and communication costs and raises privacy concerns. To address these issues researchers proposed hierarchy aware models which distributes the inference computations across the sensor network with each node processing a part of the inference. While hierarchical models reduce these overheads significantly they are computationally intensive to run on resource constrained devices which are typical to smart home deployments. In this work we present a novel approach combining Hierarchy aware Neural networks (HNN) with variational dropout technique to generate sparse models which have low computational overhead allowing them to be run on edge devices with limited resources. We evaluate our approach using an extensive real-world smart home deployment consisting of several edge devices. Measurements across different devices show that without significant loss of accuracy, energy consumption can be reduced by up to 35% over state-of-the-art.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is not one single entity, but a collection of different devices, communication technologies, protocols and services. IoT systems can span a large number of individually managed networks that are interconnected through the Internet and host the different components of an IoT application, such as sensor devices, storage servers and data processing services. Protecting such a complex multiparty system from abuse becomes a very challenging task. New difficulties arise everyday when policies are updated or new collaborations and federations appear between entities. Moreover, hacked IoT devices can also become the source of powerful attacks, as the Mirai malware has demonstrated, and therefore a danger for the other involved parties. In this paper, we propose an approach to improve the management and protection of collaborating IoT systems using distributed intrusion detection and permission-based access control. Our approach is based on interconnected middleboxes that monitor the communication between the various IoT networks and are able to stop incoming as well as outgoing attacks. We evaluate our approach through experiments with different types of attacks.
